  • Martin Scorsese’s foundation launches virtual screening room for restored films

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s non-profit The Film Foundation is launching a free virtual screening room to showcase restored films starting May 9 with ‘I Know Where I’m Going!’.

The 1945 film directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and restored by The Film Foundation and BFI National Archive, in association with ITV and Park Circus, will be available for a 24-hour window, reports ‘Deadline’.

Subsequent features will debut on the second Monday of each month. Events will start at a set time with introductions and conversations with filmmakers and archivists providing an inside look at the restoration process.

The line-up from co-curators Scorsese and Kent Jones includes Federico Fellini’s 1954 ‘La Strada’, G. Aravindan’s 1979 Indian film ‘Kummatty’, a film noir double feature of ‘Detour and The Chase’, ‘Sambizanga’, ‘One-Eyed Jacks’, ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘Lost Lost Lost’ and others.

“We’re looking forward to making these beautiful restorations available to a wide audience,” the director said Scorsese, who founded The Film Foundation in 1990 and serves as chair.

“Many of these presentations will feature restorations that are rarely seen, with myself and other filmmakers sharing why these films are important, how they have impacted our lives, and why it’s crucial that they be preserved.”

Margaret Bodde, executive director, said the Restoration Screening Room “aligns perfectly with the foundation’s mission, and we’re eager to connect with people around the world who love cinema.”

The screening of ‘I Know Where I’m Going!’ is co-presented by the BFI National Archive, Janus Films, ITV and Park Circus. The remastered version of the classic romance world premiered at Cannes Classics last year and had a UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

The screening will be introduced by Scorsese and include interviews with Thelma Schoonmaker Powell, Joanna Hogg, Tilda Swinton and Kevin Macdonald – all of whom count the films among their favorites. Restoration funding for the film was provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation with additional support provided by Matt Spick.

The Film Foundation, which has helped restore over 925 films, partnered with Oracle and DelphiQuest to create and power the platform.

  • Keanu Reeves in talks to star in Hulu’s ‘Devil in the White City’ adaptation from Scorsese, DiCaprio

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: “The Matrix Resurrections” star Keanu Reeves is in negotiations to headline the series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City” for the streamer Hulu.

The project hails from Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese who will executive produce alongside Rick Yorn, Sam Shaw, Jennifer Davisson and Stacey Sher.

It would mark Reeves’ first major role on American television, reported Deadline.

Based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book, the series tells the true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893.

“It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical ‘Murder Castle’ on fair grouradhikands – a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women. The story takes the viewer on a tour of murder, romance and mystery in the gilded age,” reads the official synopsis of the show.

The big-budget project has been in development since DiCaprio bought the film rights to the book in 2010 and previously set it up as a feature at Paramount with Scorsese to direct.

Hulu, in 2019, announced that it was working on the book as a series.

Todd Field is set to direct the first two episodes of the limited series.

Paramount TV Studios is producing alongside ABC Signature and DiCaprio’s Appian Way.

Reeves is also set to star in “John Wick: Chapter 4”, slated to be released in 2023, and will voice a character in “DC League of Super-Pets”.

  • Tom Holland defends Marvel movies as ‘real art’ after Scorsese criticism

    By IANS

Hollywood star Tom Holland has defended the Marvel Cinematic Universe from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s criticism.

The ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ actor shared that Marvel films are “real art” when firing back at Scorsese’s claims in which the celebrated director had said that they’re “not cinema”, reports aceshowbiz.com.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 25-year-old English actor sarcastically said: “You can ask Martin, ‘Would you want to make a Marvel movie?’ But he doesn’t know what it’s like because he’s never made one.”

He went on to say: “The way I break down the character, the way the director etches out the arc of the story and characters, it’s all the same, just done on a different scale. So I do think they’re real art.”

“I’ve made Marvel movies and I’ve also made movies that have been in the conversation in the world of the Oscars, and the only difference, really, is one is much more expensive than the other,” Holland continued explaining.

The ‘Cherry’ star added that some of his Marvel co-stars would agree with his comparison.

He said: “When you’re making these films, you know that good or bad, millions of people will see them, whereas when you’re making a small indie film, if it’s not very good no one will watch it, so it comes with different levels of pressure.”

He added: “I mean, you can also ask Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr or Scarlett Johansson, people who have made the kinds of movies that are ‘Oscar-worthy’ and also made superhero movies.”

“They will tell you that they’re the same, just on a different scale,” he elaborated further.

The actor portraying Todd in ‘Chaos Walking’ also joked that “there’s less Spandex in ‘Oscar movies.’”

Holland’s response came two years after Martin Scorsese snubbed MCU during his Empire magazine interview.

At the time, the director confessed his dismay at ‘Avengers: Endgame’ being declared the highest-grossing film of all time.

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them (Marvel movies), as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” Martin told the publication at the time.

“It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.” He further stressed, “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.”

Scorsese later clarified his remarks in a November 2019 op-ed for The New York Times. He said that part of his dislike for Marvel movies was merely “personal taste” but he also mentioned that major franchise movies tend to dominate movie theatres all over the country.

“In many places around this country and around the world, franchise films are now your primary choice if you want to see something on the big screen,” said ‘The Irishman’ director.

The 79-year-old pointed out: “It’s a perilous time in film exhibition, and there are fewer independent theatres than ever.”

  • Martin Scorsese to helm biopic about rock band ‘Grateful Dead’ starring Jonah Hill

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Ace director Martin Scorsese is working on a musical biopic about the rock band Grateful Dead, with actor Jonah Hill, set to star as the iconic band’s frontman Jerry Garcia.

As per Variety, in addition to directing, Scorsese will serve as a producer alongside Hill. The project reunites Scorsese and Hill for the first time since 2013’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

It is not clear what period of the band’s history the still-untitled movie will dramatize. The Grateful Dead formed in the Bay area in 1965 and became one of the key symbols of the counterculture upon releasing a debut album in 1967 that was just as heavy on the members’ love for roots music as the psychedelia of the period.

Along with Jerry Garcia, founding members include Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. Garcia’s death in 1995 brought an end to the band. His passing and their breakup did surprisingly little to diminish the Dead’s enduring popularity as Garcia’s songs continued to be played by the offshoot group Dead & Company, which just wrapped its latest tour with a sold-out three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl.

The movie is being developed at Apple, where Scorsese is currently working on his next film, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, a Western crime drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have been hired to pen the screenplay.

Surviving members of the Grateful Dead have apparently given the upcoming movie their blessing, with Weir, Kreutzmann, Lesh and Mickey Hart on board as executive producers.

Trixie Garcia, the daughter of Jerry Garcia, and the band’s manager Bernie Cahill will also executive produce, along with Eric Eisner. Additional producers include Hill’s partner Matt Dines through their company Strong Baby and Rick Yorn via LBI Entertainment.

It’s not currently known when the movie will begin production, but Scorsese is already well versed in the band’s history. In 2017, he executive-produced a six-part documentary series about the Grateful Dead titled ‘Long Strange Trip’.

  • Martin Scorsese to direct Grateful Dead biopic, Jonah Hill to play Jerry Garcia

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to direct a biopic on iconic rock band Grateful Dead with actor Jonah Hill attached to play group’s frontman Jerry Garcia.

The Apple TV Plus project would mark Scorsese and Hill’s first collaboration since 2013’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”.

The director-actor duo will also serve as producers on the movie.

According to Deadline, “American Crime Story: The People vs. O. J. Simpson” writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will be penning the script for the biopic.

It is not clear what period of the band’s history the still-untitled movie will dramatize.

The Grateful Dead, formed in San Francisco’s Bay area in 1965 amid the rise of the psychedelic counterculture, became immensely popular soon after releasing their debut album in 1967.

Along with Garcia, founding members include Bob Weir, Ron McKernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann.

The “jam band” stayed on top for decades until Garcia’s death in 1995 brought an end to the group.

This would be Socrsese’s second project on the band after 2017’s Grateful Dead documentary “Long Strange Trip”.

The film is part of Scorsese and his production banner Sikelia Productions first-look deal with Apple.

  • Robert De Niro updates fans about injury sustained on set of Martin Scorsese’s film

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: Hollywood veteran star Robert De Niro, who recently injured his leg on the set of Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ in Oklahoma, gave fans an update regarding his injury, saying that the “pain was excruciating.”

But according to People magazine, the two-time Academy Award winner believes the show must go on, even amid the “excruciating” pain.

Giving an update on his recovery, De Niro said “I tore my quad somehow. It’s just a simple stepping over something and I just went down. The pain was excruciating and now I have to get it fixed. But it happens, especially when you get older, you have to be prepared for unexpected things. But it’s manageable.”

The actor also noted that he didn’t think the injury would affect his performance as cattleman William Hale. “What I’m doing with Scorsese in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, I’m pretty much a sedentary character in a way. I don’t move around a lot, thank God. So, we’ll manage. I just have to get the procedure done and keep it straight in a certain position and let it heal,” De Niro added.

On Thursday, De Niro flew home to New York City, where he sought medical attention. A representative for the actor previously told People magazine that production was not delayed as he was already scheduled to depart that day, taking two weeks off from filming.

Based on the David Grann book of the same name, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is set in 1920s Oklahoma, depicting the serial murders of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

As per People Magazine, De Niro stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays his nephew Ernest Burkhart. The Apple film is scheduled to premiere later this year.
