In a major blow to the outlawed Maoist organizations, security forces in Jharkhand have successfully eliminated 16 Naxals during an intense firefight in West Singhbhum. The battle occurred in the notorious Saranda forest range, specifically in the Kumdi locality. Acting on specific leads regarding extremist movement, a joint operation was executed by local police units and specialized paramilitary teams. The encounter resulted in heavy losses for the insurgents, with 16 bodies reportedly identified following the initial search. Among those killed is a rewarded extremist leader whose death is expected to cripple the local organizational structure of the group. The operation underscores the intensifying efforts by the state and central forces to eradicate insurgency from the mineral-rich tribal belts of Jharkhand. Search operations are still underway to ensure no remnants of the group remain in the vicinity, while forensic teams have been called to assist in the identification process of the deceased rebels.

In a decisive move to end decades of insurgency, Chhattisgarh security forces have initiated a ‘focused search operation’ targeting the elusive Maoist commander Paparao. For over a week, specialized teams have been combing the border regions of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, acting on credible leads about his whereabouts. Paparao is considered the last major hurdle in clearing the West Bastar Division of extremist influence, making his capture or elimination a top priority for the state. Paparao’s profile is one of a veteran insurgent who has survived decades in the jungle. Known to carry an AK-47 and lead violent strikes against infrastructure and security personnel, his current predicament reflects the overall decline of the Maoist movement in the region. The sheer pressure from ongoing operations has fragmented his once-large battalion into small, disconnected groups. Officials state that he is currently hiding in the thick canopy of Abujhmarh, struggling to maintain his shrinking footprint in a landscape that was once his stronghold.

In a significant development in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, 41 Maoist cadres have laid down their arms. Officials confirmed that 32 of these individuals carried a collective bounty totaling Rs 1.19 crore, highlighting their former positions within the banned organization. This mass surrender occurred on Wednesday, with the cadres opting to rejoin mainstream society.

The surrendered individuals included 12 women and were impressed by the government’s robust surrender and rehabilitation policies. They were also motivated by the ‘Poona Margham’ initiative, a rehabilitation drive specifically designed for reintegration in the Bastar region. Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav stated that these cadres have expressed faith in the Indian Constitution and are seeking a dignified life within democratic frameworks.

Among the 41, a substantial number, 39, were affiliated with the Maoists’ South Sub-Zonal Bureau. Their previous roles spanned critical committees and divisions, including the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, Telangana State Committee, and the Dhamtari-Gariaband-Nuapada divisions. This indicates a considerable weakening of the organization’s regional leadership.

Details revealed that the surrendered cadres held various positions, from PLGA battalion members and company operatives to area committee members, platoon commanders, and militia members. Nine individuals alone each carried an Rs 8 lakh bounty, with others bearing rewards of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh, underscoring their seniority. As part of the rehabilitation process, each surrendering cadre received an immediate incentive of Rs 50,000. This event is part of a broader trend, with 790 Maoist cadres having abandoned violence in Bijapur alone since January 2024.

In a significant blow to extremist activities, fifteen Naxalites laid down their arms before security forces in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Monday. The group included nine individuals with a combined bounty totaling Rs 48 lakh, underscoring their former roles within the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA). Five women were among those who surrendered, marking a notable shift in local Naxalite presence. Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan confirmed the surrender and stated that the former militants cited the state government’s progressive development and rehabilitation initiatives as key motivators. Initiatives like the ‘Niyad Nellanar’ scheme, aimed at improving remote village infrastructure, and the ‘Poona Margham’ surrender policy, designed for social reintegration, were specifically mentioned as encouraging factors. The surrender includes hardened cadres such as Madvi Sanna and Suryam alias Ravva Soma, both with Rs 8 lakh bounties, along with their wives, highlighting the impact of these government programs on reducing insurgency in the region. Each surrendered individual received immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 as part of their reintegration process, with further support pledged under existing government schemes. This event follows a trend of increasing surrenders in Chhattisgarh, with over 2,150 Naxalites having renounced violence in the past 23 months.

A significant anti-Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district has resulted in the elimination of six Maoist insurgents. The intense gun battle unfolded Tuesday morning in the dense Indravati National Park area, following intelligence reports indicating the presence of high-ranking Naxalite leaders. A joint team of security personnel, comprising the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from Bijapur and Dantewada, alongside the Special Task Force (STF), engaged the militants after launching an anti-Naxalite operation. The exchange of fire reportedly lasted for several hours. Upon searching the site post-encounter, the bodies of six Naxalites were discovered, along with a cache of automatic weapons, including an INSAS rifle, sten guns, a .303 rifle, and explosives. Reinforcements from the DRG, STF, Bastar Fighters, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were deployed to secure the area and apprehend any fleeing cadres. The operation was ongoing at the time of reporting. Officials confirmed that the state government remains committed to eradicating the Naxalite menace, viewing this operation as a crucial step towards achieving that goal.

A CRPF jawan sustained leg injuries following an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Sunday. The incident occurred around 1:45 PM near Gogunda, under the Fulbagdi police station limits, during an area domination operation by security forces. Officials reported that the jawan, part of the CRPF’s 74th Battalion, inadvertently stepped on a pressure-activated IED, causing the explosion. He received immediate medical attention at the scene and was subsequently airlifted to Raipur for further treatment. Naxalites frequently use IEDs in the Bastar region’s forests to target security personnel on patrol. This tactic has also endangered civilians in the past. This incident follows a recent deadly IED blast in Sukma on June 9th, which claimed the life of an Additional Superintendent of Police and injured two others.
