  • Shortages of Laptops and PCs caused by high demand to last till 2022

As the world got hit with the viral outbreak earlier this year, the demand for various electronic products like laptops and desktop PCs rose immensely. This apparently has left manufacturers still being months away to fulfill existing orders with the shortge possibly lasting till 2022, as per analysts and hardware industry executives.

According to a Reuters report, one of the primary reasons for this sudden rise in demand was caused by the growing remote working or work from home requirements in the professional sense; whilst education was also shifted to the online digital realms due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak saw smartphone sales decline while devices with larger displays saw an increase in popularity and demand.

Gregg Prendergast, Pan-America president at hardware maker Acer Inc stated that “The whole supply chain has been strained like never before.” Furthermore, the annual shipments of PCs, including desktops and laptops, had topped out at about 300 million in 2008 and has since been on a steady decline, with only a few predicting such a resurgence in demand. At the moment, projections from analysts note that shipments in 2020 could reach around 300 million as well, which would be up by 15 percent over last year.

  • US To Vaccinate 100 Mn People By March, Signs Contracts With 6 Manufacturers: Official

A senior government official, tasked with monitoring the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines, has said that the United States expects to vaccinate 100 million citizens by the end of March. Dr. Moncef Slaoui, the chief medical adviser for Operation Warp Speed, while speaking to Fox News said that the US government has contracts with six different vaccine manufacturers, making it practical for the government to vaccinate 100 million people by the end of March.

This comes after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently granted emergency use authorisation to Pfizer-BioNTech’s two-shot COVID-19 vaccine, which has agreed to provide the US government with 100 million doses, enough for 50 million people. Slaoui said that the US government had planned from the start to have a handful of products, adding Pfizer is one of them. Moderna, which is expected to get approval later this week, has agreed to provide 100 million doses in the first quarter of 2021, said Slaoui.

Slaoui said that the US government will receive another 100 million doses from Moderna in the second quarter of 2020, which will be enough to meet the US government’s target. • Apple will reduce App Store cut to 15 percent for most developers starting January 1st

On Wednesday, Apple announced a reduction to its longstanding App Store commission rate, one of the most substantial changes to how iOS developers earn money in the history of the iPhone maker’s digital app marketplace, as part of a new program for small businesses. The new App Store Small Business Program, as it’s called, will allow any developer who earns less than $1 million in annual sales per year from all of their apps to qualify for a reduced App Store cut of 15 percent, half of Apple’s standard 30 percent fee, on all paid app revenue and in-app purchases.

The company says the “vast majority” of iOS app developers should be able to access the program, but Apple declined to say what percentage of its more than 28 million registered app makers would qualify. Apple also declined to specify how much of its App Store revenue would be affected by the reduced commission. But the App Store, which generated an estimated $50 billion in revenue in 2019 according to CNBC, is one of Apple’s most pivotal businesses beyond the iPhone and represents a pillar of the digital services strategy CEO Tim Cook has touted as the future of the company’s business.

APPLE WILL LET DEVELOPERS WHO EARN LESS THAN $1 MILLION KEEP 15 PERCENT MORE REVENUE
The new small business program goes into effect starting January 1st, 2021. Developers will be asked to apply for the program, and Apple says it will be releasing more information about that process and other eligibility requirements and deadlines in December. Apple did not elaborate on why it’s choosing not to automatically enroll developers into the program, but it’s possible requiring that developers enroll may reduce the potential for fraud or other abuses that could arise if Apple simply auto-enrolled everyone below the threshold.

Apple did spell out some of the program’s rules today. The company says it will look at developer proceeds for the year of 2020 to determine eligibility starting in January. New developers can also qualify right away. For those app makers that exceed the $1 million threshold at any point in 2021, they will automatically be removed from the program and subject to the standard 30 percent cut. If a developer falls back below the $1 million threshold in a future calendar year, Apple says they can re-qualify for the program and its reduced commission rate.
