Mandaviya on Monday announced that India will resume export of surplus COVID-19 vaccines in the fourth quarter of 2021 under the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ programme and to meet its commitment to the COVAX global pool, but vaccinating its own citizens remains the topmost priority of the government.

Talking about the expected production and supply trends in the coming months, the minister said the government will receive over 30 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines in October and over 100 crore doses in the coming quarter from October-December.

The cumulative doses administered so far across the country has crossed 82.65 crore.

Asserting that vaccination of its citizens remains the government’s topmost priority, Mandaviya had said, “India will be resuming export of COVID-19 vaccines under Vaccine Maitri in order to fulfil the commitment of India towards COVAX in line with our motto of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.”

He said that the surplus supply of vaccines will be used to fulfil India’s commitment towards the world for the collective fight against COVID-19. COVAX is co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the WHO.

  • India to resume export of surplus Covid vaccines in October: Union Health Minister

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday announced that India, starting October, will resume the export of Covid vaccines that was abruptly halted when the devastating second wave of the pandemic struck India in April this year.

Mandaviya said that the exports of the vaccine will resume under the “Vaccine Maitri” programme in the fourth quarter starting October 2021- while emphasising that inoculating the Indian population remains the government’s top priority.

“India will be resuming the export of vaccines under “Vaccine Maitri” in order to fulfill the commitment of India towards COVAX, in line with our motto Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” said Mandaviya, adding that the “surplus supply” of vaccines will be shared with other countries.

COVAX is co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and WHO and has been envisaged for pooling vaccines for poor countries.

The minister said that in October, the Centre is expecting a supply of 30 crore from different vaccine makers which will go further up in later months.

So far, nearly 81 crore Covid vaccine doses have been administered in India and the national vaccination drive against coronavirus seems to have picked up the pace for about a month.

Meanwhile, the announcement of the resumption of vaccine exports by India comes ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the US next week where vaccines are likely to be discussed at a summit of the leaders of the Quad countries – India, Japan, and Australia, apart from the host nation.

The WHO had said last week that it was in constant dialogue with Indian officials to resume supplies to COVAX.

“We have been assured that supply will restart this year,” senior WHO official Bruce Aylward had announced.

Till mid-April, India had donated or sold nearly 6.6 crore Covid vaccine doses to about 100 different countries, before deciding to put a halt on the exports of the crucial supply as the infections exploded countrywide.

For several months, the vaccination drive in the country had also not picked up the desired pace owing to the supply issues and also, as some experts put it, because of faulty inoculation strategies but have gathered pace now for the last few weeks when the average daily vaccination has reached nearly 80 lakh mark.

The government hopes to be able to inoculate all its 94 crore adult population with two doses of vaccines each by the year-end.

    By PTI

AHMEDABAD: Names of Gujarat Deputy CM Nitin Patel, state agriculture minister R C Faldu and Union ministers Purshottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandaviya are doing rounds amid speculation over who will succeed Vijay Rupani as Gujarat chief minister.

Rupani resigned as CM on Saturday, over a year ahead of Assembly elections in the state, without assigning any specific reason.

“Names of Patel, Faldu, Rupala and Mandaviya are being discussed. But it is impossible to say who will be the chief minister as the decision will be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi” a party leader said.

When Anandiben Patel resigned as chief minister in August 2016, there was talk that Patel would succeed her, but in a last-minute decision, Rupani was chosen for the top post.

The demand to make Nitin Patel chief minister began to trend on social media after Rupani’s resignation.

Union health minister Mandaviya, who like Patel belongs to the influential Patidar community, is also considered a front-runner.

Leaders of the community had demanded recently that the next chief minister should be a Patidar.

State BJP president C R Paatil, who originally hails from Maharashtra, is unlikely to be considered for the CM’s post, sources said.

The BJP had replaced Anandiben Patel a year before Assembly polls were due.

It has now done the same with Rupani and his successor may lead the party in the December 2022 state elections, the sources said.

  • Citing health minister’s letter, Sisodia claims Centre doesn’t want probe into oxygen shortage deaths

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said that Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has told them that there is no need to form a panel to probe oxygen shortage-related deaths in the national capital as the Supreme Court-appointed task force is there to look into the matter.

Sisodia said he had written to the Union Health Minister regarding the formation of the panel.

Delhi LG Anil Baijal has twice rejected the city government’s demand to form the panel, he said.

“The Health Minister has written to us saying that there is a Supreme Court-appointed task force to probe the matter and has said there is no need for a probe panel. But the task force has the mandate to probe the demand and supply issues for the pandemic,” he said in an online briefing.

Mandaviya has said that out of the 12 points for reference for the SC panel, five are related to oxygen, the deputy chief minister noted and pointed out that none of these five points pertain to oxygen shortage-related deaths.

“Such a big fraud has never happened in the country. If the SC-appointed panel is probing the deaths, why did the Centre ask states to give data on oxygen-related fatalities,” Sisodia said.

Centre does not want a probe into the deaths due to oxygen shortage because truth of their negligence will come out, he alleged.
