CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Monday met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at his official residence here.

The meeting comes on a day when a bill to repeal the three contentious farm laws, against which farmers have been protesting for over a year, was passed by the Lok Sabha.

“This was a simple courtesy meeting with Khattar Sahab,” said Singh while talking to reporters.

Singh is hoping for a seat sharing arrangement with the BJP for the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

Singh had resigned as the Punjab chief minister in September amid a bitter power tussle with Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Charanjit Singh Channi had replaced Singh.

After his unceremonious exit, Singh named his political party as the Punjab Lok Congress.

  • Higher compensation for crops damaged by recent hailstorm: Haryana CM Khattar

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday said farmers whose crops were damaged due to the recent hailstorm will be given a compensation higher than the current rate of Rs 12,000 per acre.

This will be announced at the next cabinet meeting, he said in Jharothi village in Sonipat district.

The chief minister was speaking in a programme related to crop failure, according to an official statement.

Khattar made several announcements for the farmers in Jharothi village, and said he himself is a farmer’s son and the entire Haryana is like his family.

“Haryana is a land of farmers. When farmers are happy, then only shopkeepers, workers, traders, and people running factories will be benefitted,” he said.

Taking a dig at the previous Congress government, Khattar said when crops were damaged due to rains back then, money used to be deposited in the accounts of the farmers after one and a half months.

“During the previous governments, cheques of only up to Rs 2, Rs 4 and Rs 10 were also given to the farmers,” he claimed.

When the new government was formed in the state, it was decided that no farmer’s cheque would be made less than Rs 500, Khattar said.

In the earlier governments, Rs 5,700 per acre was given as compensation for crop failure, and it was later increased to Rs 7,500, the chief minister said.

When the new government was formed, it announced a compensation of Rs 12,000 per acre, he added.

Khattar said he has already conducted an aerial inspection of the villages of Gohana, Julana and Kharkhoda blocks for crop failure.

  • Free education for those whose family income is less than Rs 1.80 lakh per annum: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday announced free education for those whose verified family income is less than Rs.1.80 lakh per annum.

Khattar said the government wants to ensure that no talented student belonging to a poor family loses a chance to pursue his or her dreams.

Free of cost education will be given to those whose verified family income is less than Rs 1.80 lakh per annum under the state government’s ambitious Parivar Pehchan Patra (family id) scheme, he said.

The chief minister made this announcement while interacting with students who have cracked the civil services exam-2020 and JEE advance exam-2021 under Haryana’s ‘Super 100 Programme’ during a state-level felicitation programme held at Panchkula.

Education Minister Kanwar Pal, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gian Chand Gupta, and Ambala MP Rattan Lal Kataria were present on the occasion.

Congratulating the students who have cleared the civil services exam, Khattar said, “Each one of you should remember that you have decided to opt for civil service as a career option for serving the society as during your service period you will get innumerable opportunities to work in the diverse fields.”

“Therefore, I expect that each one of you will certainly try your level best for achieving excellence to make Haryana proud,” he added.

Lauding 29 students from poor background who have cracked the JEE advance exam, the chief minister said, “All of you are a great example that if you have talent, no one can stop you from achieving your dreams no matter if you belong to a poor family. I hope that all of you will make Haryana proud in whichever field you will opt for.”

Khattar said according to the New Education Policy-2020, institutions are being set up in the state wherein education will be provided from KG to postgraduate levels.

“Initially, we are going to make an arrangement of imparting education from KG to PG in four universities. Kurukshetra University has started preparing for admission to be given under KG to PG scheme from this academic session that is 2021-22,” he said.

Khattar said in 2014, when he was sworn in as the chief minister for the first term, ensuring overall and equitable development was his utmost priority.

However, among all other sectors, bringing revolutionary reforms in education was his primary focus, for which many new and unique schemes were formulated and set up by the state government.

At present, digital reforms have been brought to replace human interface in almost every wing of the government, he said.

Online teachers transfer policy is one of the greatest examples of this as under this system more than 90 per cent of teachers are satisfied, he claimed.

Similarly, various online reforms are being brought in to make the system paperless, faceless and transparent, he said.

“In the last seven years, we have been doing various works to bring in revolutionary reforms and ensuring government welfare benefits reach those at the bottom of the pyramid. I am now satisfied and overwhelmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recognised our hard work,” said Khattar.

Modi had on Thursday heaped praise on Khattar, saying that after decades, the state has got a government which works with absolute honesty and was the best in the last five decades.

  • PM Modi showers praise on Khattar in big boost to Haryana CM

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday heaped praise on Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, saying the state has after decades got a government under his leadership which works with absolute honesty and that it will be evaluated as the best in the last five decades.

Noting that he has known Khattar, an RSS pracharak drafted into the BJP like Modi, for many years, the prime minister said his talent has come to the fore as a chief minister and added that he works with dedication and innovation, with even the central government adopting the model of some of the Haryana government’s programmes.

Modi’s public praise of the low profile chief minister has come at a time when the BJP leadership’s decision to remove three chief ministers, two in Uttarakhand and another in Gujarat, has prompted speculation about the fate of the CMs of other party-ruled states.

The prime minister’s strong endorsement of Khattar, whose leadership has come under the scanner for a few times and who has his share of detractors within the state party unit, is likely to silence his critics in the BJP and will be a strong boost to his morale.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Infosys Foundation Vishram Sadan at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) on the Jhajjar Campus of AIIMS, New Delhi, Modi noted that he had worked for many years in Haryana as a BJP leader and seen many state governments closely.

“After many decades Haryana has under the leadership of Manohar Lal Khattar got a government which works with absolute honesty. It has got a government which thinks day and night about the state’s bright future,” he said.

The media, Modi added, has not paid much attention to this positive and constructive matter but this government will be considered the best whenever an evaluation is done. He lauded the Khattar government for its innovative approach and foresight.

The “BJP team” under Khattar has laid down a foundation for Haryana with its long-term vision, and this is going to be a big strength for the state, he added.

Modi later tweeted, “The coming years will always remember and cherish the pro-people work being done by @mlkhattar Ji and his team for the progress of Haryana.” Khattar became chief minister in 2014 after the BJP stormed to power in the state on its own for the first time.

Though the BJP failed to win a majority in the 2019 polls, it joined hands with the Jannayak Janta Party to form the government and reposed its trust in him again.

“There is no need for us to intervene when High Courts are well versed with the local conditions and what is happening. We should trust High Court,” said Justice DY Chandrachud.

  • Haryana CM Khattar withdraws his ‘tit-for-tat’ remark against farmers, says was ‘misconstrued’

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday retracted his controversial “tit-for-tat” remark, saying it was “misconstrued” and he did not have any ill-intention against anyone.

The CM also said he won’t be attending a programme of the Aggarwal community in Kaithal as farmers had objected to his visit.

Khattar had made the remark at a BJP Kisan Morcha meet, a video of which had surfaced on social media, with farmers bodies alleging that he was telling party supporters to “pick up sticks” against farmers protesting the Centre’s agriculture laws.

Apparently referring to the agitation, Khattar had said, “Form groups of 500, 700, 1,000 farmers and make them volunteers. And then at every place, ‘sathe sathyam samacharet’. What does it mean–it means tit for tat (jaisa ko taisa).”

“Do not worry….when you remain there (in jail) for a month, three months or six months, you will become big leaders, your names will be etched in history,” he added.

Withdrawing his remark on Friday, Khattar said it was publicised that he suggested “picking up sticks”.

The statement had been “misconstrued”, he told reporters in Panchkula after paying obeisance at the Mata Mansa Devi temple on the occasion of Navratras.

The remark had been made in the “context of self-defence” and not out of ill-intention towards anyone, Khattar said.

“I want to tell my farmer brothers who are hurt that I am taking back my statement,” said Khattar, who was accompanied by Speaker Gian Chand Gupta.

The CM further said he does not want any breach of peace or law and order problem in the state.

“Everyone has a right to hold protest in a peaceful manner but only thing is that no one should cross the limit. No one should be harmed, vehicles should not be damaged,” he said.

Khattar also said he won’t be attending a programme of the Aggarwal community in Kaithal as farmers have said they will oppose his visit.

The protesting farmers have said they have no objection if a BJP leader from the community attends the event, the CM said.

“Speaker Gian Chand Gupta will attend the event on my behalf,” he said.

Khattar also said his government has been taking pro-farmer initiatives.

Referring to reports of crop damage due to recent showers in parts of Haryana, Khattar said a special “girdwari” has been ordered to assess the extent of damage.

  • Khattar asks Haryana’s BJP Kisan Morcha to ‘pick up sticks’ against protesting farmers

    By ANI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday asked the state unit of BJP’s Kisan Morcha to ‘pick up sticks’ and to use ‘tit for tat’ methodology against the protesting farmers.

Addressing the unit here, Khattar asked them to form volunteer groups of 700-1000 farmers at different places of the state.

“Do not worry…when you remain there (in jail) for a month, three months or six months, you will become big leaders, your names will be etched in history,” he said.

The Chief Minister, referring to the impact of the ongoing farmers’ agitation, said that the problem is limited to the northern and western districts of Haryana, while it is not as much in the southern districts.

Notably, Khattar also said that if a protest has to be suppressed, it can be done through one government order, but those protesting are “our own people and not enemies”.

Mentioning that there have been several amendments to the Constitution in the past too, the Chief Minister, while referring to the farm laws said that if any lacunae remain even after their implementation, the legislation can always be amended.

Khattar called the ‘adamant approach’ of the farmers on the repeal of the laws incorrect, and said, “Even today, amendments (in the farm laws) can be done. But in a democratic setup, the approach to remain adamant is not right.”

Farmers have been protesting at different sites since November 26 last year against the three enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

  • People from villages around farmers’ protest sites narrate woes to Khattar

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: A group of people from more than 20 villages around the farmer protest sites in Singhu and Tikri adjoining Delhi on Thursday met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar here and apprised him about the problems being faced by them due to the prolonged blockade of roads.

After giving a patient hearing to their problems, Khattar said that the government is making every possible effort to reopen the roads while maintaining law and order.

The villagers also handed over a memorandum to the chief minister demanding that the roads be reopened at the earliest.

During the meeting, Khattar said that he is also worried about the losses being caused to traders and shopkeepers due to the closure of roads.

Some among the delegation apprised the chief minister that due to the closure of the roads, they have even come to the verge of almost closing their businesses.

Khattar assured that the issue will be resolved, an official statement said.

Along with the villagers, small shopkeepers from the area also put their problems before the chief minister.

They said that the business of shopkeepers and showroom owners near the Singhu and Tikri borders, where farmers protesting against the Centre’s farm laws have been squatting for over 10 months, has come to a standstill.

The situation is so grave that people are even forced to migrate, they said, according to the statement.

It has become difficult for the local people to commute during night time, the villagers said, while demanding police patrol.

Khattar assured that the patrolling of the police would be increased immediately.

The villagers also said that due to the closure of roads on the border, children from nearby villages have almost stopped going to schools.

The future of the children is also badly affected, they said.

According to the statement, a villager informed the chief minister that due to the closure of roads a few patients had died as they could not reach hospitals in time.

“If someone’s condition deteriorates at night, then it is not possible to take them to the hospital in time,” the statement quoting the villager said.

Recently, the Haryana government had constituted a high-powered committee to make efforts to clear the road blockade along the state’s borders with Delhi.
