The political corridors of Manipur are draped in sorrow following the death of Thanglon BJP MLA Wungjagoin Walte, who succumbed to injuries from the state’s brutal ethnic strife. Chief Minister Yumtham Khemchand wasted no time, flying to Delhi to honor the late legislator with heartfelt tributes.

Walte, representing the Kuki-Zo community from Churachandpur’s Thanglon area, was at the epicenter of the violence that ignited on May 3, 2023. The very next day, after a meeting with ex-CM N. Biren Singh in Imphal, a furious mob assaulted him in Nagamapal, inflicting wounds so grave they caused partial paralysis. His driver’s life was also claimed in the vicious attack.

Air ambulanced to the national capital, Walte endured months of rigorous treatment in various facilities. He shifted to local care in Churachandpur for further rehabilitation, inching towards recovery. Yet, a sudden health decline on February 8 necessitated another emergency transfer to Delhi, orchestrated by the current administration to leverage top-tier healthcare.

All efforts proved futile as Walte passed away on Saturday. The news prompted CM Khemchand’s swift journey from Imphal to Delhi, culminating in a solemn tribute. Leaders across the spectrum have voiced their grief, underscoring Walte’s role.

Even in crisis, Walte championed unity for his community amid Manipur’s deepening divides. His departure amplifies the tragedy of the conflict, stirring profound loss in tribal politics and beyond, as the state grapples with its fractured harmony.
