  • Mamata Banerjee calls TMC rebels traitors; says BJP old-timers shedding tears over ticket to turncoats

    By PTI
EGRA (WB): Branding TMC rebels as “traitors” like Mir Jafar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday took a swipe at the BJP for fielding the turncoats in the polls leaving saffron party old-timers shed tears.

On her decision to contest from Nandigram in place of her traditional Bhowanipore seat, the TMC supremo said it was because of the fact that Nandigram and Singur movement was the trendsetter in the field of land reforms in the state.

Addressing a poll rally at Egra in Purba Medinipur district, Banerjee accused BJP of practising “politics of riot, loot and murder”, and urged everyone “to be on guard against outsiders appearing in their localities”.

“Gaddars (traitors), Mir Jafars have now become BJP candidates to the dismay of old-timers of the saffron party,” she said in an obvious reference to Suvendu Adhikari and Rajib Banerjee who had shifted allegiance to the BJP along with other leaders like Mukul Roy.

Mir Jafar, military general of Bengal’s last indepedent nawab Siraj-ud-daulah, is considered a hate figure for deceiving the besieged nawab during the Battle of Plassey in 1757, paving the way for British rule in India.

BJP is witnessing protests from its cadres at several places for giving ticket to TMC turncoats ignoring them.

The TMC, which has made ‘Bengali pride’ its core poll plank, has called the BJP a “party of outsiders” as its top leaders hail from outside the state.

Venting her anger against the TMC leaders for crossing over to the BJP,she said “these turncoats” were given many responsibilities in the past but they did not do justice with the job.

“I will be monitoring every project so that its benefit reaches everyone,” she said.

About her decision to contest from Nandigram, she said, “Many people have asked me why I decided to contest from faraway Nandigram rather than a constituency in Kolkata.

I replied, I chose it since the movement against land acquisition in Nandigram (in 2007-2008) and Singur had played a significant role in the field of land reforms in the state.

“Also I consider every corner of Bengal as my own place.

” Banerjee is pitted against her protege-turned-adversary Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram seat where voting will take place on April 1.

The anti-land acquisition movement at Nandigram had catapulted Banerjee to power in 2011, ending 34-year rule of the Left Front in Bengal.

Slamming the saffron party for chanting “Hari Hari in front and stabbing from behind”, the TMC chief claimed, “Chewing pan parag and putting tilak on forehead, the BJP carries on attack on people.

” Coining the slogan “No vote to BJP”, Banerjee also asked the crowd not to vote for the CPI-M and the Congress either “as they are friends of the BJP.

” The CPI-M, Congress and the fledgling ISF have formed an alliance in West Bengal against the TMC and the BJP in the election of 294-member state assembly.

Banerjee asked the people to maintain vigil outside the counting centres where the EVMs will be kept after polling, saying “Do not leave the place even if central security and state police ask you to do so.

“Also if an EVM malfunctions, ensure that the machine replacing it is tested properly.

” Alleging that women are not safe in the BJP-ruled states, she said, “In Uttar Pradesh, women are raped and murdered.

The father of a rape victim was killed recently.

“If a poor man steals Rs 500 we pounce on him.

What about the BJP stealing lakhs of rupees in jumla, what about lakhs of cash being plundered in the name of selling of PSUs? These thefts by BJP leaders are never known publicly?” The chief minister said, ‘Duare Sarkar’ (government at the doorstep) camps will be set up again in August-September and will be held twice a year from now on.

Asserting that the victory of the TMC in the assembly polls “will be the precursor to dislodging the BJP in Delhi”,she said “If you want me to be at the helm again, make every TMC candidate a winner.

” The TMC leader recited ‘chandi path’ before wrapping up her speech and also wished Muslims, Christians and members of different tribes and castes.

“We are all united and together.

    None can rupture our unity.

    This is Bengal”, she said.

At the second meeting in Patashpur in the same district, Banerjee took a dig at the family of Suvendu Adhikari, “Purba Medinipur was controlled by a particular set of people.

“I had blindly trusted them but in return I got treachery and betrayal.

I could never imagine that from 2014 he was in touch with BJP.

I couldn’t realise, so I apologise before you,” she said without naming Suvendu Adhikari.

At Tamluk, the last stop of her public meetings, the TMC supremo claimed that due to Keleghai Kapaleswari irrigation project the regular flooding of the area has stopped.

She said if BJP is not defeated, the saffron party, which is “anti-farmers,anti-labourers, anti-women and anti-people”, will ultimately “sell” the country.

The CM said the state government has provided 900 acres of land to ISKCON for a grand temple complex in Nadia,to highlight her government’s favourable approach towards religious organisations.

Before ending her speech, she chanted Durga mantra “.

    .

    .

narayani namostute” and wished all religions.

  • Bengal polls 2021: BJP old-timers shedding tears as party fielded TMC turncoats, says Mamata at rally

    By PTI
EGRA: Branding TMC turncoats as “traitors”, party supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday said it was good riddance that they have left her camp, but the “switch over has left BJP old-timers sulking” as the saffron party has chosen to field the defectors over its loyalists.

Addressing a poll rally at Egra in Purba Medinipur, the West Bengal chief minister accused the BJP of practising “politics of riot, loot and murder”, and urged everyone “to be on guard against outsiders appearing in their localities”.

  • Mamata threatens to carry ‘parivartan’ to Delhi after winning Bengal polls

    By PTI
KALAIKUNDA/GARBETA/KESIARI: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she would bring `parivartan’ (change) to Delhi after winning the upcoming assembly polls in her home state.

The chief minister said that the BJP is targeting West Bengal with all its might as it knows that she will go for the Centre soon after securing victory in her state.

Political analysts have long speculated that Banerjee, who has served as a central minister earlier, harboured ambitions of playing a key role in national politics.

“The BJP is afraid that if we win in West Bengal, then we will bring an alternative in Delhi and that is why they are targeting the state with all force,” she said while addressing a public meeting in Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur district, famous for its air force base from which Indian jets played a key role in the 1971 war.

Banerjee also accused the BJP of “stealing” her ‘parivartan’ slogan and remodelling it as ‘asol parivartan’ (real change) for the Bengal elections.

Accusing the BJP-led government at the Centre of trying to “sell off the Railways”, the former railway minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet urged people not to vote for the saffron party.

She also promised a new port at Digha and ancillary industries in the railway town of Kharagpur and other parts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts.

Claiming that her government has brought down unemployment in West Bengal by 40 per cent, she said the MSME sector will receive an investment of Rs 5 lakh crore, which will create a large number of jobs.

She promised to accord OBC status to some castes following requisite inquiry.

The chief minister also promised Rs 10 lakh education loan to students at only 4 per cent interest for pursuing higher studies.

Alleging that the BJP will try to rig the assembly elections, Banerjee asked TMC workers to remain vigilant during and after the eight-phase elections till the counting of votes on May 2.

“I have respect for the police, they do not do such things, but there are instructions from the BJP to take hold of the EVM machines,” she alleged.

Maintaining that the once-Maoist stronghold of Jangalmahal region is now a peaceful area, Banerjee said her government has worked hard for its development.

The TMC had won most of the assembly seats in the Jangalmahal region in the 2016 elections but the BJP emerged victorious in all the five Lok Sabha seats in the region, spread over Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts, in the 2019 polls.

At a separate rally at Kesiari, Banerjee asked “Marxist friends” to desist from voting for the CPI(M) or the Congress as they were in league “with the communal BJP”.

She asked people not to cast a single vote to those “who have links with the killers of Gandhiji” and alleged that “the CPI-M is now helping the BJP.”

The TMC supremo is facing a difficult fight this time against her one-time follower and now BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari at Nandigram in neighbouring Purba Medinipur district and had earlier turned to the Left Front and Congress to defeat the saffron party.

“Only the TMC will keep up its fight against the BJP,” she said and blamed the saffron party for conspiring against her which led to her injury on March 10 at Nandigram when she was campaigning there.

“After the attack they (BJP) are now spreading falsehoods.

After the conspiracy they are now involved in character assassination,” Banerjee alleged.

The chief minister also accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of plundering crores of rupees.

“Tell us what happened to PM Cares Fund, what happened to the currencies declared defunct during ‘notebandi’.

What happened to the Ujjwala Yojana? “How much money is changing hands by selling PSUs and closing them down.

No audit, no account of that huge cash,” she alleged.

Stepping up her tirade against the BJP, Banerjee said its leaders from outside arrive in choppers and planes with “sackful of cash” before elections to lure voters and “loot votes”.

Significantly, Banerjee recited `Chandi shlokas’ while concluding her speeches at Garbeta and Kesiari meetings.

Analysts feel it is a bid by the TMC leader to counter propaganda of her playing the minority card before the polls.

  • Mamata asks ‘Marxist friends’ not to vote for CPI-M, Congress

    By PTI
GARBETA/KESIARI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee campaigning in tribal Paschim Medinipur district on Thursday for the coming state election asked “Marxist friends” not to vote for either the CPI-M or Congress, who are “cohorts of the communal BJP”.

She asked people not to give a single vote to those “who have links with the killers of Gandhiji.”

CPI-M, she said, is a “rotten” party whose leader was accused in the unearthing of skeletons in Paschim Medinipur.

“Now the CPI-M is helping the BJP,” she alleged.

“I request my Marxist friends not to vote for either the Congress or the CPI-M as they have become cohorts of the communal BJP,” the TMC supremo said.

The CPI-M, Congress and the fledgling ISF have formed an alliance in West Bengal.

Banerjee was referring to the unearthing of skeletal remains at Narayangarh in Paschim Medinipur district in 2011 and a CPI-M leader was accused in connection with it.

Banerjee is facing a difficult fight this time as she will take on her one time follower and now BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari at Nandigram in neighbouring Purba Medinipur district.

She had earlier turned to the Left Front and Congress to defeat the saffron party, which has emerged as the main opposition in the state.

“Only TMC will keep up its fight against the BJP,” she said and blamed the saffron party for conspiring against her at Nandigram which led to her being injured on March 10 when she was campaigning there.

“After the attack they (BJP) are now spreading falsehoods. After the conspiracy they are now involved in character assassination,” Banerjee said.

The Trinamool Congress supremo alleged that the BJP- led government at the Centre is involved in plundering crores of rupees and accusing rival parties of graft.

“Tell us what happened to the PM Care fund, the currency notes declared defunct during notebandi. What happened to the Ujjwala Yojana? “How much money is changing hands by selling PSUs and closing them down? There is no audit, no account of that huge amount,” she said.

Banerjee said BJP leaders from outside the state arrive in choppers and planes with “sackful of cash” before elections to lure voters and to “loot votes”.

“During election they give cash to clubs, temples, mosques,” she said and alleged that “CPI-M harmads (goons) have crossed over to BJP.”

She blamed the saffron party of bringing in “goondas” (musclemen) from outside in trains and buses to “loot votes”.

Calling BJP anti-farmer and anti-tribal, she said “We (TMC) will not take away land from tribals. We have given them land pattas. We will not allow BJP to implement the anti- farmer farm laws which will rob farmers of the right to choose the person to whom they will sell the produce of their land.”

Banerjee acknowledged that the relief given by the TMC government after Cyclone Amphan might have missed out “one or two” beneficiaries.

But BJP was not seen anywhere during the crisis and only TMC workers were by the side of the affected people.

“Thousands of crores of rupees reached the affected after Cyclone Amphan due to the state government’s inititative. But there can be one or two exceptions. Where was BJP when we rushed in to be with the affected people? Where were its leaders? At the time of human misery they were absent,” she said.

Asserting that TMC will never allow NPR exercise in West Bengal, the party supremo alleged that BJP will delete the name of voters if anyone is not present at home during the visit by enumerators.

“They (BJP) will just evict you (the people). But we will not allow them to carry on the exercise here. We did not and we will not. Not a single member of a family, a citizen of the country can be evicted from here,” she asserted.

National Population Register(NPR) is a document containing names of the country’s “usual residents”.

Calling BJP a party of rioters, she said “We don’t want riots or bloodshed. We don’t want the politics of retaliation to come to Bengal.”

Recounting that Garbeta was rocked by Maoist violence during the Left Front rule and 300 people were killed in a year, she said there has been a vast change in the situation during the past 10 years due to development under TMC.

Banerjee announced that Rs 10,000 will be given for every acre possessed by a farmer if TMC returns to power in the coming state election.

An outreach programme ‘Duare Ration’ (ration at the doorstep) will be implemented to ensure that not a single family is left out of the public distribution scheme.

The programme will be held every four months.

Besides, Rs 10 lakh will be provided to every student for higher studies under the Student Credit Card scheme with only four per cent interest.

Those studying in standard 12 will be given Rs 10000 each to buy a tab to help them in their studies if TMC wins the state election, she said.

People belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes will be given an allowance of Rs 1,000 per family every month.

Significantly Banerjee recited Chandi shlokas while concluding her speeches at Garbeta and Kesiari meetings.

BJP leaders have lampooned her for chanting the shlokas in public before the polls.

  • Bengal polls: Mamata urges Left supporters to vote for Trinamool; CPM hits back

    By PTI
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday appealed to Left Front supporters to vote for TMC candidates in order to defeat the divisive BJP in West Bengal.

She thanked the Left minded people in the state for coming out with the “no vote to BJP” campaign.

Banerjee is facing one of the most difficult political challenges of her life.

She is facing a stiff challenge from BJP in the coming state poll after helming West Bengal for a decade.

“It is imperative for the sake of the state to stop BJP from coming to power in Bengal. I would like to thank my Left minded friends for coming out with the no vote to BJP campaign.”

“At the same time I would like to tell them that since the Left cannot come to power, its supporters should not waste their votes by casting it in favour of LF.”

“Instead the LF supporters should vote for TMC to defeat the BJP, Banerjee told reporters while releasing her partys election manifesto.”

Her comments come in the backdrop of several TMC leaders openly asking the Left parties to come out in support of TMC to stop the saffron party’s march in the state.

The CPI-M led Left Front has rejected the appeal and blamed the ruling TMC for the rise of the saffron camp in West Bengal.

“Unfortunately, Bengal is now witnessing a threat from outsiders who want to foster divisive mentality and disrupt harmony. It is imperative for us to avert this threat. I promise that I will stand by each and every person of Bengal across all communities to protect their fundamental rights, she said. I will be forever indebted to my motherland. Being a daughter of Bengal I have dedicated my whole life for the state,” Banerjee added.

She called BJP a political virus and slammed the Centre for trying to destroy the federal fabric of the state.

“Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP is running an elected government in Delhi. Yet the Centre is trying to give more powers to the Lt Governor, who is nominated. We condemn such actions,” she added.

She also said on Wednesday that Lord Ram worshipped Goddess Durga as she is much superior to him.

Addressing the people of Jhargram and Binpur constituencies at a poll rally here in Jhargram district which has a sizeable Adivasi population, she claimed that the BJP will not allow them to take the name of ‘Marang Buru’, whom the Santhals consider as the supreme source of power, but they will have to chant “Jai Shri Ram” (Glory to Lord Ram).

“They (BJP) are saying that you will not be able to practise your religion, you will have to chant Jai Shri Ram. But you will not be able to say Jai Siya Ram,” Banerjee said.

“Ram performed the puja of Devi Durga (in the Ramayana). Maa Durga is much superior to Ram, that is why he worshipped Maa Durga,” the West Bengal chief minister told the meeting.

BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told an election rally on Tuesday that Banerjee gets livid at the chant of Jai Shri Ram and now she has started visiting temples and is reciting ‘Chandi path’, an ode to Goddes Durga.

On the BJP’s accusation that her government created hurdles in the immersion of the idol of goddess Durga, Banerjee said that the Trinamool Congress dispensation gave Rs 50,000 to each club for performing the Durga puja, the biggest festival of the state.

Alleging atrocities on women in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, she claimed that it is a party of Duryodhana and Dushasana, villainous characters in the Mahabharata.

Apparently referring to the saffron partys allegation that the TMC is pursuing the politics of appeasement of minorities, Banerjee said her government works with the people of all religions and castes for the development of the state.

The TMC boss alleged that the BJP creates rift between people on religious lines.

  • West Bengal polls: BJP running ‘factory of Dushasans’, says Mamata in Jhargram

    By ANI
JHARGARM: Continuing her attack at the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) of repeatedly targeting her by hurting her physically.

Addressing a public meeting in the Gopiballavpur, Jhargram, Mamata — while sitting on a wheelchair — said the BJP is running a “factory of Dushasans” in the country, deceiving the common people with false promises and bribery.

“Today they (BJP) have injured me, my head has been hurt, my hands were broken, I had to undergo an operation in the abdomen,” she said.

“CPM used to hit me before, now it’s BJP,” she added.

The Chief Minister further alleged that the BJP had rigged two voting booths in the Goaltore area in the last Lok Sabha elections and won.

She further requested the people of Jhargram to vote for her party as TMC would bring development to the district.

“I have built many bridges in this district and named them after ‘Bhasaraghat Bridge’ and ‘Raghunath Mahato Bridge,’ paying my respect to the backward caste communities,” Mamata said,

She also recalled the development schemes and programs that her government has introduced in the region, especially for the ‘Adivasi community’ and other backward castes. “We are already under discussion to bring more backward caste under the facilities of OBC categories.”

She also claimed that BJP doesn’t know anything about the people of Jangalmahal. “BJP leaders come once a year with food from five-star hotels, and bribe the scheduled caste people for their house, take pictures, but do not eat the food cooked by our Adivasi mothers and sisters.”

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mamata said: “I requested for COVID vaccines from the Centre, but PM Modi refused to distribute the vaccines. I wanted to vaccinate my state without taking any money from the people.”

During the rally, the TMC chief promised a better future to the people of Jangalmahal, sharing her plans on starting the Bidhoba Bhata (widow pensions) from May 1, among others.

The state, witnessing a high-octane battle between the BJP and the TMC, is going to an eight-phased assembly poll for 294 constituencies. The result will be announced on May 2.

    By PTI
KOTULPUR: Alleging that the Mamata Banerjee dispensation has not done anything for the welfare of farmers and Adivasis in West Bengal, BJP president J P Nadda on Tuesday claimed that after practising politics of appeasement for years, the TMC supremo has started reciting Sanskrit slokas to assert her Hindu identity.

She left several Hindu OBC castes such as Mahishya and Teli out of the reserved category because of her “politics of appeasement”, and the BJP, if voted to power, will take steps to include them, Nadda said while addressing a rally at Kotulpur in Bankura district.

Banerjee had won elections in the name of ‘Ma, Mati, Manush’ (Mother, Land and People), Nadda said and alleged that during the last decade, her party has engaged in “torturing women, killing BJP workers, dictatorship, extortion and politics of appeasement”.

“I am told that Mamata Banerjee is now doing Chandi Path. But in the last 10 years, you have been engaged in minority appeasement. You have stopped Saraswati Puja in the state and immersion of idols of goddess Durga,” he said.

Banerjee did Chandi Path (recitation of hymns) at Nandigram, from where she is contesting, at a public meeting on March 9.

“During the stone laying ceremony of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, you stopped people from offering puja in the state,” the BJP president said.

Referring to the court verdict in the Batla House encounter case, Nadda said that the TMC supremo had claimed in 2008 that it was fake and would quit politics if proved wrong.

Nadda asked, “What will she say now?” A Delhi court Monday awarded death penalty to convict Ariz Khan for the murder of decorated Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in connection with the sensational Batla House encounter case of 2008.

RANIBANDH: Wishing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee speedy recovery, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that she is in pain due to her injury and wondered whether she could feel the agony of the families of BJP workers killed during TMC’s rule in the state.

Shah, who was addressing a poll rally here, said 130 BJP workers were killed by TMC goons.

He hit out at the TMC for not doing enough for the development of the minorities and introducing cut money culture in the state.

He promised that if BJP is voted to power in West Bengal in the ooming Assembly poll it will implement the seventh Pay Commission for the state government employees.

“Didi (elder sister) when you were hurt in your leg you felt pain. I wish you speedy recovery. But what about the pain of the mothers of 130 BJP activists who were killed by TMC goons?
