    Express News Service

DEHRADUN: Taking cognizance of the inhuman treatment meted out to children at a Madrassa (an institution for education of Muslim students) in Veerbhatti near Nainital, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered an inquiry into all the 419 madrasas in the state.

Following the CM’s instructions received by Additional Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, the Home Department has issued orders in this regard to all the District Magistrates of the state. There are 419 madrasas in the state, out of which 192 madrasas are getting government help.

According to the information received by this newspaper, “In the raid conducted by the team led by the City Magistrate in the illegally running madrasa at Veerbhatti in Nainital district, the team found 24 children in a sick condition”.

The madrasa children had also accused the operator and his son of assault and sexual abuse.

Police have registered a case against madrasa operator Mohammad Haroon and his son Ibrahim under various sections including POCSO. After this episode came to light, CM Dhami has ordered an inquiry into all the madrasas in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand Waqf Board chairman Shadab Shams told The New Indian Express, “No madrasa will be allowed to operate privately by collecting donations in the name of religion”. A madrasa that collects donations in public and operates it cannot be termed as a ‘private madrasa’. This is against the ethics of Shariat.

On February 12, 2023, the then Social Welfare Minister late Chandan Ram Das had also directed to investigate all madrasas operating in the state. A three-member committee was formed to investigate. The officials were directed to check whether the madrasas had the recognition of the education department.

The minister had sought a report on the matter within a month, but no action was taken against any madrasa.

  • No need for madrasas in state, will close all of them: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

    By Express News Service

BELAGAVI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said there is no need for madrasas in the state and that he will close all of them in the coming days. “We have already closed hundreds of madrasas in Assam. We need to establish colleges and universities, not madrasas,” he added.    Inaugurating an exhibition titled ‘Shivacharitra’ at Shivaji Garden here by Belagavi (South) MLA Abhay Patil, Sarma also launched a scathing attack on the Mughal rulers, stating that they destroyed the country earlier, and now the Congress was following in their footsteps.

There is a need to root them out of the country,” he fumed.       Hitting out at a section of historians, he said they projected that the entire country was in the hands of Mughal rulers like Aurangzeb but what they did not disclose was that Shivaji Maharaj was 10 times more powerful as a warrior than Aurangzeb.

  • Locals demolish madrasa in Assam’s Goalpara alleging ‘jihadi activities’ in its premises

    By PTI

GUWAHATI: A madrasa and a residence adjacent to it in Assam’s Goalpara district was demolished allegedly by local people on Tuesday in protest against the use of the premises for jihadi activities, the police claimed.

The madrasa located in Pakhiura Char under Matia police station and the residence adjacent to it was allegedly used for jihadi activities by two Bangladeshi nationals, who are currently absconding, the police said.

The use of the madrasa premises for anti-national activity came to light following the arrest of one Jalaluddin Sheikh, a cleric of the madrasa.

Sheikh had allegedly engaged the duo as teachers of the Darogar Alga Pakhiura Char Madrassa and was arrested recently for his reported links with them, a police official said. The madrasa is the fourth to be demolished in the northeastern state.

“The locals voluntarily demolished the madrasa and the residence adjacent to it in a mark of strong resentment towards Jihadi activities,” the official said.

The absconding Bangladeshis, members of Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent ()/Ansarul Bangla Team (ABT), were found to be Aminul Islam alias Usman alias Mehdy Hasan and Jahangir Alom, he said.

The duo had taught in the madrasa at different times between 2020-22, the official added.

Three other madrasas in Morigaon, Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts were razed to the ground by the respective authorities since August this year.
