    Express News Service

SRINAGAR: Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the first international mall in Jammu and Kashmir, three and a half years after the abrogation of Article 370. The mall, expected to be the biggest mall in the union territory, will be built by the UAE-based Emaar group in Srinagar.

The mall, valued at Rs 250 crores, covering 10 lakh square feet of area, will come up at the Sempora area of Srinagar by the year 2026. With 500 shops to be set up in it, the mall is anticipated to provide jobs to over 13,000 youth.

The mega mall would include a mall, six multiplexes, a five-star hotel, and a multi-use commercial and residential complex. It is the first significant Foreign Direct Investment in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir.

“Today is a historic day for Jammu and Kashmir, as the mega mall’s foundation is being laid. It is a proud moment for all of us,” said Lt Governor Manoj Sinha before laying the foundation stone of the mall.

He said Emaar group will also invest in setting up IT Towers in Jammu and Srinagar. “The total investment by the group in Jammu and Kashmir is estimated to be Rs 500 Crores”. The Lt Governor said the J&K government is working to provide a better business ecosystem to the investors in the UT.

“We have ensured a better environment for the investors. The new industrial scheme is providing investors with the best incentives. No state in the country is offering as many incentives as Jammu and Kashmir is offering its investors. Besides, the cost of electricity is also cheaper here,” he said.

Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 by the centre on 5 August 2019, Sinha said there have been a lot of development in the last three years. “Not only has the rule of law returned but we are receiving private investment as well,” he added.

He said, in the last 22 months, 5000 national investors have expressed their desire to invest in Jammu and Kashmir. “Every day eight new investors are being registered. Last month 45 industries were operationalised.” Sinha further said after Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir is the second region in the country to have a women-owned industrial estate, set up in the Udhampur district exclusively for women entrepreneurs.

“There are a lot of possibilities here. People should come and invest here,” added Sinha.

  • J&K: PDP chief hits back at LG on ‘terrorists and their families given jobs’ remark

    By PTI

RAJOURI/JAMMU: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday hit back at Lt Governor Manoj Sinha over his remarks that previous governments in Jammu and Kashmir provided jobs to terrorists and their families, saying this “is not our tradition” but giving employment to “hooligans” might have been a custom in Uttar Pradesh.

“LG sahab has come from Uttar Pradesh and was probably speaking about his experience there. There might have been a tradition to provide jobs to mafia and hooligans in Uttar Pradesh but that is not our tradition,” the former chief minister said in Rajouri when asked by reporters about his statement at a function in Jammu on Monday.

Mehbooba also attacked the BJP, alleging it has created a fear psychosis in Jammu and Kashmir by making random arrests and is using the same policy in the rest of the country to silence the voice of the Opposition.

In a veiled attack on the National Conference (NC), the Congress and the PDP, Lt Governor (LG) Sinha on Monday said previous governments had provided jobs to terrorists and their family members, while his administration has made the recruitment process transparent to ensure jobs are given to meritorious students only.

“What can they say who provided jobs to terrorists and their family members? They have no right to speak against the recruitment process when they have made one lakh back-door appointments. The time has gone when the jobs were selling in shops,” the LG had said.

His comments came close on the heels of NC president Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba recently joining a candlelight vigil by job aspirants protesting against the hiring of a previously blacklisted company for conducting computer-based written tests.

Earlier addressing a public meeting in Rajouri, Mehbooba claimed that “Jammu and Kashmir is going through a very difficult phase and people are frightened to speak on any issue”.

“Inflation has broken the back of people, unemployment is on the rise despite a promise by the BJP that it will create jobs for the youth after the abrogation of Article 370,” she said.

The government in 2019 had abrogated the article, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated in into union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Seeking people’s support, Mehbooba said she can do nothing on her own.

“You have to join me and strengthen my voice to safeguard our identity and culture, land and jobs, besides fighting oppression,” she said.

Defending her party’s alliance with the BJP in 2014, Mehbooba said PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took the difficult decision in view of the people’s mandate to the BJP in Jammu in the 2014 assembly elections.

“It was not the PDP which brought the BJP to power in J&K…The fact is that we implemented the party’s (PDP) agenda and did not allow the BJP to run its agenda,” she said.

“Our efforts kept Article 370 safe and after the fall of the government, the BJP abrogated Article 370 which came like an earthquake, and its aftershocks are still rattling J&K in the form of various laws like property tax,” Mehbooba said and added that the PDP did not allow the BJP to “bulldoze houses”.

The PDP “even withdrew cases against 12,000 youth who were jailed and shifted to outside jails (in places) such as Agra and Haryana after 2019”, the former chief minister said.

Referring to Hurriyat’s Syed Ali Shah Geelani not allowing entry to parliamentarians into his house in September 2016, she said, “We tried to rope in the Hurriyat Conference for dialogue and wrote a letter to them to meet visiting parliamentarians but they shut their doors to the guests, giving a wrong message across the country.”

Mehbooba said her government had also announced a one-month unilateral ceasefire with militants but there was no positive response from the other side.

The PDP government had also cleared the decks for the regularisation of 60,000 casual labourers but nothing moved after the fall of the government and they are still on the roads, she claimed.

Referring to the slapping of Public Safety Act on politicians, including herself in 2019, she said “they dubbed us anti-national and did not allow the opposition to raise their voice”.

“They are utilising the same experiment in other parts of the country, jailing political leaders on the false charge of corruption,” she said.

The PDP will not stay silent and will continue to raise its voice against the BJP government which is violating the constitution and trampling democracy, Mehbooba said.

  • Mirwaiz barred from visiting Jamia to offer Friday prayers

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR: A week after Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said detained separatist leader and cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was a free man and there were no restrictions on his movement, Mirwaiz was again not allowed to offer Friday prayers and barred by police from moving out of his residence, where he is under house arrest since August 4, 2019.

In the afternoon, Mirwaiz attempted to move out of his Nageen residence in a vehicle. However, the policemen deployed outside his residence intercepted the vehicle near the gate and did not allow Mirwaiz to move out.

Mirwaiz told the police officials why they were stopping him as Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has announced that “I am a free man and there are no restrictions on my movement. I have been in detention for three years and now that Lt Governor has said I am free, I want to visit Jamia Masjid to offer Friday prayers. People at Jamia Masjid are waiting for me”.

“For three years, you have placed me under house detention. When the statement about my release was made at the highest level, only then I am leaving the house and want to offer Friday prayers at Jamia. Infact Lt Governor had said the policemen deployed around my house will facilitate my visit. Is this what you are facilitating?,” he said adding, “I don’t know why I have been detained for over three years”.

A police officer told Mirwaiz that it is an issue of security and a decision would be taken after the security review is completed.

Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest on August 4, 2019, a day before abrogation of Article 370 and 35A and bifurcation of J&K state into two Union Territories.

“You are not only violating my human rights but also violating my religious rights by not allowing me to offer Friday prayers,” Mirwaiz said. “Nobody is allowed to meet me. I am unable to meet my close relatives and people. Many of my relatives died during these three years and I could not attend their funerals”.

In Jamia Masjid, people were carrying pictures of Mirwaiz with slogans, “Stop Telling Lies, Release Mirwaiz” and demanded his release.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha last week told BBC that Miwaiz has neither been arrested nor is under house detention and no restrictions have been placed on his movement.

“Mirwaiz has not been stopped from going out.  For his safety, the security men are deployed around his house and directions have been given that if he moves out, security should be provided to him and there should be no restrictions,” Sinha said.
