  • BJP govt subverting democracy and Constitution: Opposition leaders

New Delhi: In a show of strength and unity, the INDIA bloc came together at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday and blew the poll bugle for Lok Sabha elections with a scathing attack on Narendra Modi government, accusing it of subverting democracy and Constitution.

All major Opposition leaders – Sonia Gandhi, son Rahul, daughter Priyanka, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Sitaram Yechury, D Raja, Uddhav Thackerary, son Aditya, Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Champai Soren – came together at ‘Loktantra Bachao Rally’ to press for the release of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand’s former CM Hemant Soren.

Kejriwal’s March 21 arrest is the immediate trigger for the entire Opposition to come together, but the finer optics of the rally went far beyond. For starters, Trinamool Congress, which could not hammer out a seat-sharing pact with the Congress in West Bengal, came out strongly in support of the INDIA bloc, with leader Derek O’Brien stating that his party “was, is and will be with INDIA bloc”. Sonia, who has been keeping away from most public engagements, made a rare appearance and sat next to Kejriwal’s wife Sunita to show her support. Two chairs were kept empty on the stage for Kejriwal and Soren to emphasise that Opposition leaders’ arrest by central investigative agencies was the central point of the rally. The Opposition put forth following demands to the Election Commission of India: A level playing field before elections, efforts to forcefully scuttle Opposition parties’ finances should be immediately stopped, action by ED, CBI and the Income-Tax department should be stopped and a Supreme Court-monitored special investigation team should probe the electoral bonds scheme.

Wife reads Kejriwal messageThe rally, which was organised by AAP to garner support for its jailed national convenor, saw emotions run high when Sunita carried a message from her husband and read it out. Striking an instant chord with the crowd, she said BJP wanted her husband to resign as CM and asked the crowd if he should. As supporters responded in the negative, Sunita said she believed her husband was a “lion” and “they won’t be able to keep him in jail for too long”. Her voice choked with emotion as she said that though her husband had not taken the permission of other INDIA bloc partners, he wanted to give six guarantees on behalf of the Opposition.

The guarantees included 24×7 power across the country, free electricity to the poor, constructing excellent government schools in every village and neighbourhood, establishing mohalla clinic in every village, ensuring fair price for crops to farmers as given in Swaminathan Commission report and full statehood for Delhi.MODI trying to fix polls: RahulSenior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi warned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was desperately trying to “fix” elections, the way sometimes cricket matches are fixed. Pointing out the way cricket matches are fixed by various methods like appointing umpires of choice, buying out players and intimidating captains, same way Modi appointed election commissioners of his choice, was trying to pressurise judiciary and had jailed two chief ministers, Soren and Kejriwal, just ahead of elections. He said all bank accounts of Congress had been frozen right at the start of the election process in a clear attempt to prevent it from campaigning.

Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray gave a catchy slogan to counter BJP’s call of “is baar chaar sau paar”. He said this time it should be “is baar BJP tadi paar” (throw out BJP this time). Tejashwi said the way BJP was showing confidence that it would cross 400, it seemed that it had already tampered with electronic voting machines (EVMs). The rally came on a day Modi flagged off BJP’s campaign in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh, however, appeared confident. “I have heard that people from Delhi are outside today somewhere. This is an indication of the times to come. People will throw him out of Delhi very soon,” he said.

    Early Life And Criminal Beginnings

Born into a politically influential family, Ansari’s foray into crime began in the 1980s and 1990s when he established himself among government contract mafias in Uttar Pradesh. His criminal activities, ranging from extortion to murder, earned him notoriety in the region. Despite facing numerous criminal charges, Ansari’s political ambitions remained undeterred.

Foray Into Politics: From Gangster To Legislator

Ansari’s transition from gangster to politician marked a pivotal moment in his life. Their stronghold over local politics reflected a blend of power, patronage, and legacy.

  • Lok Sabha Elections: Shiv Sena (UBT) firm on contesting from Sangli, nobody should do anything that will help BJP: Sanjay Raut

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday said that his party was firm on contesting from Maharashtra’s Sangli Lok Sabha seat, stressing that nobody should do anything that will directly help the BJP. Raut was responding to questions about Congress’ exasperation after his party on Wednesday announced its first list of 17 candidates, including for the Sangli seat and a few from Mumbai.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) are partners in the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra.

Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat and Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra assembly Vijay Wadettiwar had asked their MVA partner to reconsider its decision, stressing that it did not suit “coalition dharma”. Raut said there is always give and take in an alliance and they gave Ramtek and Kolhapur seats to the Congress. He said Sena (UBT) has also given Amravati to the Congress.

“Even our local cadres were upset but we did not allow the resentment to spiral,” he said.

Congress took Ramtek so Sena (UBT) said it would contest from Mumbai North. In an alliance, there is a need to strengthen and expand it, not individual parties, he said. “The Congress has to lead the nation and we support the party in its endeavour. Will Congress give up the fight against BJP just for one seat (Sangli),” he asked. If the opposition alliance stays together as a cohesive unit, MVA can easily win the Sangli seat, he said. Sena (UBT) has nominated wrestler Chandrahar Patil for Sangli.

“If someone has other intentions to help the BJP indirectly, we will not allow that to happen,” he said.

According to Congress leaders, the party is keen to contest from Sangli, Mumbai South Central and Mumbai North West seats, all included in the list released by Sena (UBT).

Raut was also asked about the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) deciding to go solo in the Lok Sabha polls.

He said it is Ambedkar’s duty to protect the Constitution and democracy. “I am sure Ambedkar will not take any step to help the BJP,” he added.

Lok Sabha polls for Maharashtra’s 48 seats will be held in five phases between April 19 and May 20 and votes will be counted on June 4.

  • Arvind Kejriwal: “BJP afraid of INDIA bloc”: Jairam Ramesh on arrest of Delhi CM Kejriwal

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday took a jibe at the BJP over the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying it was ‘afraid’ of the INDIA bloc going into the Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to ANI, Ramesh said, “The arrest of Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren and Delhi Chief Minister is an attack on democracy and our constitution.”

“This is politics of revenge at play. The BJP is afraid of the INDIA alliance. This is an attack on democracy and our constitution,” the Congress leader further said. Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said there is only one thought in the PM’s mind- ‘One Nation No Election’.

“There is only one thought in the Prime Minister’s mind-‘One Nation, No Election’… The entire country is in OPD-One Person Dictatorship,” he added.

Earlier, the BJP’s Delhi president Virendraa Sachdeva said the truth surrounding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s alleged involvement in the liquor scam would soon be revealed.”Law is taking its course…Yesterday he (Arvind Kejriwal) was bargaining in the court that he is the Chief Minister of Delhi, hence he should be given two months but there is a rule of law in the country. The law treats every criminal the same, it is proven today. Soon the truth of Arvind Kejriwal’s involvement in liquor scam will be revealed to everyone,” Sachdeva told ANI.On Friday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court sent Kejriwal to ED custody till March 28. The probe agency had asked for 10 days remand after arresting the Delhi CM in the alleged Delhi excise policy case.

In its arguments before the court, the ED alleged that the Delhi Chief Minister is the key conspirator and kingpin in demanding kickbacks from businessmen. The agency further claimed that Kejriwal was directly involved in the formation of the excise policy.

The ED counsel claimed that Vijay Nair, who was the media in charge of AAP, was working for Delhi CM Kejriwal. Nair, who the agency said lives adjacent to the residence of Kejriwal, acted as a middleman between the AAP and the South group.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for Kejriwal opposed the remand plea and submitted that the agency needs to show the necessity of arrest. Singhvi argued that the power of arrest and the necessity of arrest are two different things.

Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in the excise policy case on Thursday after the Delhi High Court refused interim protection to Kejriwal from coercive action in connection with the excise policy case.

The case pertains to alleged irregularities and money laundering in framing and implementing the Delhi excise policy case 2022, which was later scrapped.

Two senior AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, are in judicial custody in the excise policy case. Sisodia, who was the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the CBI on February 26 following several rounds of questioning. On October 5, ED arrested Sanjay Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha member.

Kejriwal’s arrest came days after the ED arrested Bharat Rashta Samithi (BRS) leader and daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao K Kavitha, in connection with its investigation into money laundering charges linked to the now-scrapped excise policy. Kavitha is in ED custody till March 23.
