  • West Bengal polls: Colour containing ‘harmful chemicals’ thrown at Locket Chatterjee; BJP blames TMC

    By ANI
HOOGLY: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Locket Chatterjee alleged that colour containing ‘harmful chemicals’ was thrown on her face at an event in Hoogly on Saturday.

“A coarse substance was thrown at me. When I looked up to see who threw it, I saw 3-4 people wearing TMC badge standing nearby, they did it,” Chatterjee told reporters here.

Chatterjee is contesting from Chinsurah Assembly seat Hoogly district in state Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, BJP alleged that the attack was carried out allegedly by Trinamool Congress “goons”.

“TMC goons led by GP Pradhan Bidyut Biswas, Kodalia No. 2, attacked Locket Chatterjee, a BJP candidate from Chinsurah Assembly. The ‘khela’ of hatred, violence and harassment will be put to an end soon. This cowardly ‘khela’ of harassing women is triggered by the fear of defeat!” BJP Bengal tweeted.

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections concluded with an estimated 79.79 per cent voter turnout on Saturday. 30 seats covering all assembly constituencies from the districts of Purulia and Jhargram and a segment of Bankura, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur went to polls to decide on the electoral fate of 191 candidates, including 21 women.

  • MPs, defectors and actors among candidates: BJP deploys heavy artillery in south Bengal

    Express News Service
KOLKATA:  The BJP is deploying heavy artillery to wrest south Bengal from the Trinamool Congress, if one were to go by the list of candidates for 63 seats in the third and fourth phases of the eight-phase West Bengal Assembly polls.

For, it has fielded four BJP members of Parliament, four defectors and an equal number of actors, trying to whip up enthusiasm and possibly create a wave for the big fight.

The party has already made deep inroads in north Bengal during the Lok Sabha polls. While Union minister and Asansol MP Babul Supriyo will contest from Tollygunge in Kolkata, Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta will enter the fray from Tarakeshwar.

Dasgupta’s name is already doing the rounds as a possible chief ministerial candidate.

Tarakeshwar is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Hooghly district and his candidature is significant in the backdrop of the BJP’s Hindutva rhetoric.

Fielding Supriyo in Tollygunge is being seen as a smart move as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while announcing her party’s candidate list, had hinted she might contest from there besides Nandigram.

Former minister in Mamata’s cabinet Rajib Banerjee has been fielded from his own constituency Domjur in Howrah and Trinamool defector Rabindranath Bhattacharya from Singur. Bhattacharya joined the BJP two days after Mamata denied him a ticket.

But angry BJP supporters in Singur reportedly locked up visiting Madhya Pradesh health minister Prabhuram Chaudhary in a party office, demanding Bhattacharya’s axing from the list.

Meanwhile, minutes after he was nominated as BJP candidate from Tarakeswar assembly seat in Hooghly district, Dasgupta said his party wants to put an end to TMCs ‘syndicate raj’ in West Bengal.

He also asked people who hail from the state but live outside to “chip in” and help the BJP build ‘Sonar Bangla’ (golden Bengal).

“We all are aware about the situation prevailing in state. This atmosphere of violence, extortion. We want to end that. The BJP will ensure that people in Bengal get to live in peace,” he said.

Senior saffron party leaders including Amit Shah and J P Nadda have often hit out at the Mamata Banerjee camp for allegedly patronising syndicates and clubs that extort money from common people.

Dasgupta also said that “work opportunities have dried up” in the state, and talented youth are moving out for jobs and higher education.

  • BJP leader visits Sisir Adhikari at his residence, speculation rife over Trinamool MP’s next move

    By PTI
NANDIGRAM: BJP MP Locket Chatterjee on Saturday visited the residence of TMC’s Lok Sabha member Sisir Adhikari, who is also the father of political heavyweight and the saffron party’s Nandigram candidate Suvendu Adhikari, raising speculation that the veteran leader might switch camp ahead of the Bengal assembly polls.

Chatterjee, who had lunch at the Adhikari residence at Contai, stressed that it was “courtesy call”, and Sisir Adhikaris political move was not discussed during the meeting, even as political corridors went abuzz with murmurs that the TMC MP might join the saffron camp during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state later this month.

“It was a courtesy lunch. Sisirda is a senior politician and the Adhikari family is synonymous with Medinipur (of which Nandigram is a part). He had once praised my Lok Sabha speech. We share good rapport. He requested me to visit him again,” the BJP leader said.

She, however, clarified that the BJP would welcome the TMC MP with open arms if he decides to join the party.

Sisir Adhikari, on his part, told reporters that two of his sons are BJP members, and “Locket visiting his residence should not surprise anyone.

Why should anyone have their eyebrows raised when a leader makes a courtesy visit?” Veteran TMC leader Sougata Roy, when approached, said “Sisirda has largely remained inactive in the recent times. We will urge him not to join the ‘dal badal’ (party changing) game, given his advanced age and ailments.”

BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya claimed that all of Purba Medinipur wants the Adhikari family patriarch to join the saffron camp.

Notably, Suvendu Adhikari and his brother Soumendu, who also joined the BJP two months ago, were not at home during the BJP MP’s visit to their residence.

Their other brother, Dibyendu — also a TMC MP – was present at the lunch meet.
