  • Youth joining terrorism in Kashmir comes down, LoC reports no ceasefire violation since February end

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI: The Valley of Kashmir (UT of J&K) seems to be witnessing a phase of relative peace as per the data shared by the armed forces. While the number of youth joining various terror organisations has decreased substantially, the ceasefire violations have witnessed a sharp decline.

As per sources till June 1 only 58 youth picked up guns which were 81 in the corresponding period of the year 2020. A total of 166 locals from Kashmir had joined terrorism in 2020 with 119 joining in 2019.

In various operations up to 8 July this year, the Army sources said to have neutralised 68 Terrorists. The figures in the corresponding period last year were 127.

“For the forces, the good part is that the number of youth picking guns is lesser than the number of terrorists killed in the same period,” told the source.

The decrease of terrorist-related activities on various parameters is also attributed to this year’s February 25 reiteration of the Ceasefire Violation agreement which has not been violated by the Pakistan Army, confirmed the source.

As per the figures shared there have been only 592 Ceasefire Violations (CFV) this year and those all were prior to ceasefire agreement. The decline stands out as the violations in the year 2020 in the corresponding period (till July 1, 2020) was 2301.

If the same is compared with the previous years’ data, the decline is noteworthy. There were 4,635 CFVs in the year 2020 and it was 3233 in 2019.

The forces are not putting their guards down as the terrorists have not stopped the activities. There were 57 Terrorist Initiated Incidents (TIIs) this year till 01 July which stood at 68 in the corresponding period in the year 2020. There were 173 TIIs in 2019 and it was 142 in 2020.

The soldiers along the 740 km long Line of Control continue with the same drills which they used to follow before the February CFV reiteration.

  • Don’t test Indian Army’s patience: Gen MM Naravane sends clear message to China, Pakistan

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI: In a strongly worded message to China and Pakistan, Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane said that no one should try to test the military’s patience with regard to defending the country’s borders.

“We are committed to finding the resolution of our disputes through discussions and political efforts but no one should commit the mistake of testing our patience,” he said in an address at the Army Day parade in Delhi’s Cariappa Parade ground.

While there is palpable tension with China along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh, with armies of the two countries deployed in standoff position, Pakistan is resorting to unprovoked ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and is resorting to a proxy war in Kashmir.

Naravane assured the countrymen that the sacrifice of soldiers in Galwan Valley will not go in vain.

In May last year, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army unilaterally tried to change the status quo at multiple locations along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.

On June 15, 2020, violent clashes took place which led to casualties on both sides.

While 20 Indian soldiers were martyred, China did not make its count public despite admitting to casualties.

Naravane also said that the army had eliminated over 200 terrorists in Kashmir in the last year alone.

“Around 300-400 terrorists are waiting in training camps near the border to infiltrate into the Indian territory. Number of ceasefire violations went up by 44 per cent last year, which shows the nefarious intentions of Pakistan,” he said.

Talking about the insurgency in the Northeast, the Army Chief said there has been some improvement on that front.

“Over 600 terrorists have surrendered and seized a large of cache of arms and ammunition. With the help of the Myanmar Army, we conducted operations and got huge success,” Naravane said.

Naravane also talked about the challenges surrounding the modernisation process and said there have been Capital procurements and steps have also been taken to develop future military technologies.

“We have procured arms and ammunition worth Rs 5,000 crore under emergency and fast track schemes and under capital procurement, we have signed contracts of Rs 13,000 crore this year,” he added.

Works on new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, unmanned systems, directed energy weapons, and swarm drones are continuing in collaboration with the institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)

Indian Army has identified 29 projects worth Rs 32,000 crore for its modernisation initiative as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

  • Pakistan Summons India’s Envoy In Bid To Frame Army As UNMO Vehicle Targeted Along LoC

Even after military sources in New Delhi have rejected the allegations, Pakistan on Saturday summoned India’s Charg d’Affaires Gaurav Ahluwalia to register a protest after a United Nations Military Observers (UNMO) vehicle was targeted in the country’s Chirikot sector along the Line of Control (LoC).

The Indian diplomat was summoned to the Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad a day after the Pakistan Army accused the Indian Army of “deliberately” targeting the UNMO, an allegation dismissed by India as completely false, baseless and factually incorrect. The FO said that the UN Observers were on their way to Polas village to meet with the victims of ceasefire violations when their vehicle was targeted. “While the vehicle was damaged, the two UNMOs remained unharmed,” it said.

According to news agency PTI, military sources in New Delhi have rejected the allegation, saying reports of targeting the UN vehicle are not true.

The allegations came after Pakistan claimed that India was planning a surgical strike against the country. In a statement at a press conference in Dubai, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday said that he had credible information that India was planning a surgical strike against Pakistan. According to Dawn, Pakistan Army had been put on high alert amidst a possible threat of another attempt by India to conduct a surgical strike inside Pakistani territory.

  • India, Pakistan trade fire on LoC

The Indian and Pakistani armies traded fire on the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, a defence spokesman said.

“The Pakistan Army violated ceasefire at around 9 a.m., by resorting to unprovoked firing on the LoC in Sunderbani area,” Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said here.

“Indian positions retaliated effectively and there were no reports of casualty or damage from our side.”

  • Rahul Gandhi insulting slain Army soldiers: Shah

BJP chief Amit Shah Saturday alleged that Congress president Rahul Gandhi was insulting slain Army soldiers by claiming that the 2016 surgical strike across the LoC was conducted to win the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

He said that today Army jawans have developed a sense of pride that their government is standing behind them rock solid.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi took revenge for Army martyrs. Rahul Gandhi is saying that surgical strike was conducted to win Uttar Pradesh election. You insult the martyrs of the country. You could not even show some courage,” Shah said at a public meeting in Phalodi town of Jodhpur district in Rajasthan.

Addressing a gathering at Udaipur in poll-bound Rajasthan earlier Saturday, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the surgical strike was made public as the BJP was fighting elections in Uttar Pradesh.

He also told the gathering, “Like during the Narendra Modi government, surgical strike was conducted thrice during Manmohan Singh government. Are you aware of it? Modi actually reached into the Army’s domain and shaped surgical strike into a political asset.”

Hitting out at the Congress, Shah said, “On one hand there is a troop of patriots under leadership of Narendra Modi and on the other hand there is a troop which doesn’t have a leader, policy and principles.”

He also took a dig at Gandhi’s party for not declaring its chief ministerial candidate, and wondered how can an “army” win which has not been able to finalise its leader.
