  • Infiltration bid foiled in J-K’s Uri sector

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: Security forces on Saturday foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector, officials here said.

They said there was an infiltration bid by terrorists in the early hours in the Uri sector of Baramulla district but it was foiled by the alert troops.

The Army has launched searches for possible recoveries from the area, which is densely vegetated, they added.

After a brief exchange of fire between the two sides, a quadcopter was flown by the Pakistani side over the scene of the incident, the officials said.

The quadcopter was withdrawn by the Pakistanis after it was fired at by the soldiers of the Indian Army, they said.

The use of the quadcopter brings to the fore the complicity between the terrorists and the Pakistan Army in providing assistance during infiltration bids, the officials added.

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR: The Army on Tuesday said troops have foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Nowshera sector of the border district of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir.

An army official said troops deployed at LoC in the Nowshera sector detected some suspicious movement last night. “Army men challenged the infiltrators and fired on them,” he said.

  • No ceasefire violation along LoC in Kashmir since February agreement: Indian Army officer

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: There has been no ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir since the reiteration of the agreement between the armies of India and Pakistan in February this year, a top Army official here said on Monday.

General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps or Chinar Corps, Lt Gen D P Pandey, said there have been some infiltration attempts, but unlike previous years they have not been ‘adequately supported’ by ceasefire violations.

“The ceasefire violations have not increased. This year there has been none (ceasefire violation). At least in the Kashmir Valley, there has been zero,” the GoC told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Lt Gen Pandey said while there has been no instigation from Pakistan, the Indian Army is totally alert and prepared to respond appropriately to any ceasefire violation.

“We are totally prepared for ceasefire violations, if anything happens, we are all set to respond appropriately. But, frankly, there has been no instigation from across the border,” he said.

Asked about infiltration attempts made by militants from across the LoC this year, the Army officer said there have hardly been any successful attempts.

“There have been some attempts. Unlike previous years, these have not been adequately supported (by ceasefire violations). There have hardly been any successful attempts, only about two attempts have succeeded. One was neutralised in Bandipora and we are looking for the second one,” he said.

Referring to the search operation launched by the Army along the LoC in Uri sector in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, the GoC said the operation has been ongoing for the last 24 hours after “we felt that there is an infiltration attempt which has been made”.

“We are looking for them….are they on this side or have gone back after making an attempt, that issue has not yet been clarified or verified on the ground,’ he said.

Lt Gen Pandey, however, said the force was alert to foil any infiltration attempt.

“I can assure you that we are quite alert . Our troops on the ground are totally alert and we will ensure that minimal infiltration takes place whenever they attempt,” he said.

India and Pakistan had agreed to the strict observance of all agreements, understandings and ceasefire along the Line of Control and all other sectors with effect from the February 24-25 midnight 2021.

Earlier, the GOC Chinar Corps felicitated students of the first and second batches of the Army’s Kashmir Super 30 (Medical) course who are now successfully pursuing MBBS and other courses after clearing the NEET.

  • Indian Army foils infiltration bid by heavily armed terrorists along LoC

    By PTI

JAMMU: The Army has foiled a major infiltration bid by a group of heavily armed terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said on Friday.

The infiltration attempt was detected by alert troops of the Indian Army, defence spokesperson Lt Col Devender Anand said.

“A group of heavily armed Pakistani terrorists attempted to infiltrate along the LoC in Poonch sector last night (Thursday),” he said.

“The infiltrators were challenged and heavy firing ensued,” the spokesman said.

Owing to undulating terrain and heavy undergrowth, the terrorists managed to break contact and escape back towards Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) under the cover of darkness, he said.

A thorough search of the encounter site was carried out, and a huge quantity of supplies left behind by the terrorists was recovered, including clothing, packaged food items and medicines with Pakistani markings, Lt Col Anand said.

The Indian Army maintains a determined resolve to thwart any infiltration attempts or nefarious designs by anti-national elements, he said.

  • Stringent measures being taken to check cross-border infiltration by terrorists: Jitendra Singh

    By PTI

JAMMU: Union minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday said stringent measures are being taken to check cross-border infiltration by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir and though it has been controlled to a large extent, it may not have stopped completely.

Addressing an event here, the minister of state for personnel said even though effective border fencing is in place and thermal detection is also carried out, security forces have come across underground tunnels used by infiltrators coming from across the border.

Singh said security forces are performing their duty with utmost sincerity and diligence, but it is also the responsibility of the local population to cooperate in detection and checking of these underground routes.

“Stringent measures are being taken to check border infiltration by terrorists, which has been brought under control to a large extent but may not have stopped completely,” he said.

Referring to the construction of family bunkers for the safety of people living along the Line of Control (LoC), modern household toilets in border areas and roads along the International Border, Singh said for the first time since independence, several sensitive decisions have been taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the people living along the border.

He said those who say nothing has been done by the Modi government must visit the family bunkers before arriving at conclusions while sitting in their drawing rooms.

Barely 10 to 12 km from the venue of this function, family bunkers with all amenities, almost equivalent to a one-room residential flat, have been constructed for long stay and shelter in the event of border firing.

Singh said the real question is why the previous governments did not address people’s long-pending demand for bunkers.

The minister also attended a function at Reasi that was organised by Saksham, a social organisation working for disabled people. Singh said the Modi government’s approach is to ensure empowerment of the weaker sections of society and that they get appropriate respect.

For this, he said, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has taken several important decisions in recent times like increasing the reservation quota in jobs for ‘Divyangs’ including acid attack victims.

  • Labrador ‘Doti’ stands guard against narcotics smuggling from Pakistan

    Express News Service
POONCH: Adding to the measures to secure the Line of Control in the Hamirpur area of Poonch district, the Indian Army has added a sniffer dog to its security grid with an aim to sanitize those inimical elements peddling narcotics into the country.

A two-year-old black labrador named Doti trained specially to identify narcotics, has joined duty as a narcotics sniffer dog in the Hamirpur area after a large number of cases of narcotics seizure came to light, according to an Army soldier.

“Doti was deployed here six months back and has been performing his duty at the Dabbi Check Post at the Anti Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS) in the Hamirpur area where there is a cluster of 9 villages which are ahead of the AIOS Fence but are inside the LoC on the Indian side,” the soldier said.

The narcotics are pushed with an aim to pull the youth into addiction, making them vulnerable and gullible enough to facilitate transporting more narcotics into the country as well as generate funds that can be used to finance anti-national activities, said an officer who did not wish to be named.

Doti not only sniffs out the contraband, but he also acts as a psychological deterrent, the soldier quoted above added, as his sight scares the people, including women, carrying the consignment.

The situation in the area is unique as the Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS) grid was set up under a plan, which at places has villages lying between the AIOS and the LoC.

There are nine villages with a total population of around 5,000 people in the area, residing ahead of the AIOS.

The AIOS is a fence that has been erected deeper inside from the Line of Control to enhance the ability to detect and intercept terrorists attempting to infiltrate/exfiltrate and to reduce border infiltration as part of the Indian Army’s counter-infiltration strategy.

It has an appropriate mix of technology and human resource put together including innovative troops deployment, proactive use of surveillance and monitoring devices.

On the basis of regular analysis of threat assessment and past infiltration attempts, drills and procedures are modified to counter emerging threats.

It is a double-row fence consisting of concertina wire and is just one of the methods to stop infiltration and not a foolproof system.

It consists of 10 to 12 feet high and 6 to 7 feet wide mesh of concertina wire with a system of floodlights, sensors, sirens, thermal imagers, minefields, foot patrols, and drones for recce.
