    By PTI

JAMMU: A top police officer Tuesday stressed on the need for enhanced security measures and proactive counterterrorism operations to frustrate the attempts by Pakistan-sponsored elements to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir’s twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

The assertion of Jammu Zone Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Mukesh Singh came in the backdrop of the recent encounters between terrorists and security forces in the two districts.

Singh also emphasised strict vigilance along the Line of Control (LoC) to prevent infiltration attempts and reactivation of border police posts, a police spokesperson said.

Nine army personnel were killed by terrorists in Surankote and Mendhar forests in Poonch district last month.

Accompanied by deputy inspector general of police, Rajouri-Poonch Vivek Gupta, the ADGP conducted two-day extensive tour of the two border districts and reviewed the present security scenario, the spokesperson said.

The ADGP also chaired a high-level meeting with senior police, army and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and civil officers.

Representatives of intelligence agencies apprised the meeting about the present security scenario in the border districts, the spokesperson said.

“Pakistan-sponsored elements are time and again making attempts to damage peaceful atmosphere to disturb normal life. These evil attempts would be dealt with fortitude,” Singh told the meeting.

He stressed for enhanced security measures and proactive counterterrorism operations to neutralise terrorists present in both districts.

The ADGP also emphasised on the collective measures to tackle security situation and subversive acts by the terrorists and their masters across the border.

He asked all officers to put in place effective measures for maintaining peace and order in coordination with CAPFs with special emphasis on counterterrorism operations in view of the recent encounters, the spokesperson said.

He said the officers were directed to keep close surveillance over the activities of Over Ground Workers, mischief-mongers and miscreants.

The ADGP also emphasised the need to be vigilant on the border to prevent infiltration attempts, the spokesperson said, adding the reactivation of border police posts was another point emphasised upon during the meeting.

Singh lauded the DIG Rajouri-Poonch range, SSP Rajouri, SSP Poonch and other territorial officers for their efforts in maintaining peace and urged them to continue their good work and make further efforts to strengthen police-public relation, the spokesperson said.

  • Army recovers 30 kg of ‘drug-like’ substance along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: The Army has recovered around 30 kg of a contraband substance worth about Rs 25 crore in the black market along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector, police said on Sunday.

“On Saturday, alert Indian troops deployed along the LoC in Uri sector in Baramulla district of north Kashmir observed some suspicious movement.

“Upon a search of the area, it was found that a contraband-like substance, most likely drugs, was dropped there,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Baramulla Rayees Mohammad Bhat told reporters in Baramulla.

He said the peddlers trying to smuggle the drugs into the Indian side of the LoC ran away after observing the movement of troops.

The SSP said two bags with Pakistani markings containing approximately 25-30 kg of a drug-like substance were recovered.

“The exact nature of the heroin-like substance is being ascertained through the authorities concerned. The value of the suspected contraband is around Rs 20-25 crore in the black market,” he added.

A cap, a couple of backpacks and a couple of gunny bags were also recovered from the spot, the SSP said.

He said legal proceedings have been initiated after the suspected contraband was handed over to the police and a case has been registered under the relevant sections of law.

“The huge drug haul along the LoC showcases the nefarious designs of the Pakistan-based narco-terror nexus and its inimical intent to abet terrorism and finance terror in India. This drug bust is a huge setback to the nexus,” the officer said.

  • Gunfight breaks out during search operations for terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir’s Rajouri district

    By PTI

JAMMU: A gunfight broke on Sunday after security forces launched a search operation in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district following information about suspected movement of terrorists from across the Line of Control (LoC), officials said.

The officials said that the encounter started when terrorists opened fire on the joint search parties of the Army and police in the forest area of Dori Maal near Barote Gali in Manjakote area. They said the gunfight between the two sides was going on for the last several hours but there was no immediate report of any casualty on either side.

The search operation was launched in the area along with parts of Thanamandi in the early hours of Sunday after intelligence inputs suggested movement of a fresh group of terrorists who managed to sneak into this side and are hiding in the forest area, the officials said. “The encounter is going on and further details are awaited,” a senior police officer said.

The twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region have witnessed a spurt in infiltration attempts since June this year, resulting in the killing of nine terrorists in separate encounters. Three soldiers also laid down their lives in the earlier operations.

  • Around 140 terrorists waiting at launch pads across LoC despite ceasefire: Official

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: Around 140 terrorists are waiting at launch pads to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir and the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) remains in place even though India and Pakistan agreed in February to a ceasefire, a senior security official said on Thursday.

Contending that the ceasefire agreement was more important for Pakistan as it is desperately trying to come out of the “grey list” of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the sincerity of Islamabad could have been gauged if they had dismantled the terror infrastructure.

The official at the same time said the Army has been noticing continued presence of around 140 terrorists at the launch pads across the LoC, likely waiting to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir, but the robust counter-infiltration grid has so far desisted them from making any such attempts.

“They tried in the past but had to return after alert jawans foiled all their nefarious designs,” the official said.

The official said Pakistan is using the ceasefire window to strengthen its infrastructure along the LoC that was damaged in cross-border shelling last year in response to their troops’ firing at civilian areas on the Indian side of the LoC.

Commenting on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir since the Centre abrogated its special status two years ago, the official said foreign terrorists have suddenly disappeared from the scene and got themselves locked in either some hideouts in densely populated areas or mountainous heights having natural caves.

On locals joining terrorist outfits, the official said there has been a constant message to anyone and everyone that those having any evil design “against our country” should shun such ambitions as all those who either pick up a weapon or harbour ill intentions against the sovereignty of the nation “will be dealt with iron hand”.

Simultaneously, he said, the Army has been constantly contacting the families whose children are likely to be brainwashed and asking them to take appropriate precautions against it.

The results have borne fruits as a number of lives have been saved so far due to a proactive approach of educating families and preventing their wards from joining terror ranks, he added.

Following talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan over hotline, a joint statement was issued on February 25, 2021 in which the two countries agreed to the strict observance of all agreements, understandings and ceasefire along the Line of Control and all other sectors with effect from the February 24-25 midnight 2021.
