Justice delayed but not denied—that’s the message from a Bihar court that finally punished five men for a barbaric double assault in 1991. The Muzaffarpur Additional District Judge-5 court delivered life sentences to the culprits who tied a woman to a tree, beat her mercilessly, and then tortured her brother to death.

The violence erupted in Sivarahan Chaturbhuj village when a gang led by Baidyanath Rai invaded Mohan Rai’s farmland. Armed with guns, lathis, and explosives, they forcibly tilled the soil despite objections. Basanti Devi, Mohan’s mother, bore the brunt first: beaten brutally and bound to a tree like an animal.

Her brother Kunwar Rai rushed to her aid amid the village uproar, only to face Baidyanath’s gunfire. Three shots rang out, felling Kunwar instantly. The mob then snapped his arm in a final act of cruelty as he lay dying. Fast-forward 34 years: Judge Alok Kumar Pandey sentenced Baidyanath, Rambalam, Mahanth, Ramchandra Paswan, and Sahdev Rai to life behind bars, plus Rs 50,000 fines each.

Special Public Prosecutor Sunil Kumar Pandey meticulously built the case with eyewitness accounts from the FIR lodged by Mohan Rai, naming 13 suspects. Though years of delays tested the family’s resolve, today’s verdict brought tears of relief. ‘My mother’s eyes witnessed the horror; now justice has blinded the guilty,’ Mohan reflected.

This ruling not only avenges a heinous crime but also highlights the resilience of India’s legal system in upholding accountability across generations.

Gujarat’s law enforcement has notched up an extraordinary feat in Anand district, clinching 100% convictions in seven POCSO cases between March and December 2024. Six offenders now face life behind bars, marking a decisive blow against child exploitation.

Friday’s court rulings added two more life sentences to the tally, completing the sweep. One accused received 20 years, but all cases centered on sexual offenses against children, demanding unwavering pursuit of justice.

Efficiency defined the process: FIRs translated to charge sheets in under 45 days across the board. Judges delivered verdicts swiftly, often in eight to nine months, minimizing delays that plague many trials.

SP GG Jasani oversaw the investigations, with former Petlad Division Circle Inspector DR Chaudhary at the helm—currently serving at Borsad station. Their strategy? A holistic probe from inception to conclusion, merging age-old tactics with modern tools.

The e-Sakshya application captured video evidence of statements and inspections, safeguarding against tampering. Forensic experts and crime scene specialists supplied irrefutable scientific data, bolstering prosecution arguments.

Deputy CM Harsh Sanghvi lauded the team’s diligence, emphasizing how it bolsters faith in police protection for girls. He reiterated Gujarat’s ironclad stance: zero tolerance for atrocities on women and children, with relentless action promised.

This milestone not only delivers closure to victims but also signals to predators that justice in Anand is swift and certain, potentially inspiring reforms across India’s justice system.

TOKYO — Tetsuya Yamagami, the 45-year-old assassin who gunned down ex-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with a crudely made firearm, received a life sentence Wednesday from Japan’s Nara District Court. The ruling comes nearly two years after the brazen daytime shooting in Nara that stunned the world and exposed deep fissures in Japanese society.

Prosecutors painted a picture of calculated murder, securing convictions on homicide and illegal firearms discharge charges. Yamagami, who showed no remorse in court, had meticulously assembled his weapon from everyday materials, firing it at Abe as the politician addressed supporters. Defense attorneys countered with tales of personal torment, seeking leniency by linking the crime to Yamagami’s abusive childhood and his mother’s ruinous ties to the Unification Church.

At the heart of Yamagami’s motive lay a personal vendetta: his family’s bankruptcy after his mother funneled 100 million yen to the controversial group, which he believed Abe supported politically. This revelation triggered widespread scrutiny of the church’s coercive donation practices, prompting legislative action. A new law now safeguards against exploitative fundraising, while courts have moved to dismantle the organization’s legal standing.

Abe, a towering figure in modern Japan, had shaped the nation’s trajectory through his ‘Abenomics’ agenda and strengthened alliances abroad. From his early days as an aide to his father, a former foreign minister, to leading the country for record time, his career was marked by resilience. The assassination during an election rally amplified debates on security lapses and cult influences in politics.

As Yamagami begins his life term, Japan grapples with the incident’s ripple effects—from church reforms to heightened political protections. The sentence delivers justice for Abe’s grieving family and supporters, while serving as a stern warning against vigilante justice rooted in unresolved grievances.

In Ranchi, Jharkhand, three individuals have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the high-profile murder case of land dealer Kamal Bhushan, who was gunned down on May 30, 2022, in the Sukhdev Nagar police station area. The incident occurred on Devi Mandap Road, where Bhushan was fatally shot. The court also imposed a fine on the convicted individuals, who include W. Kujur, Bhushan’s former business partner, his son Rahul Kujur, and Kavis Adnan. The court of Additional Judge Anand Prakash of the Ranchi Civil Court found the three accused guilty and imposed the life sentence. Each of them was also fined ₹15,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment. Two other accused, Sushila Kujur and the government witness Munwar Afaq, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The murder took place near the busy Piska More Chowk, as Bhushan was about to get into his car after meeting with his lawyer. The strained relationship between Bhushan and the Kujur family stemmed from the love marriage of his daughter Yamini to Rahul Kujur, W. Kujur’s son, which Bhushan disapproved of.

Former MP Prajwal Revanna broke down on Friday after the Karnataka MP/MLA Special Court held him guilty of raping a domestic help. On Saturday, the court pronounced the verdict in one of the four rape cases registered against Prajwal, the grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

A Special Court in Bengaluru, designated to handle criminal cases involving former and sitting MPs and MLAs, convicted former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna in one rape case. The court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his life. This is the maximum punishment prescribed under Section 376(2) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with aggravated forms of rape, particularly when committed by individuals in positions of authority or trust.

Prajwal’s father, Hardanahalli Devegowda Revanna (HD Revanna), is a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Karnataka, representing the Holenarasipur constituency in Hassan district. The case against Prajwal was initiated following a complaint by a woman from K R Nagar in Mysuru.

The Civil Court in Simdega delivered its verdict on Wednesday in the gruesome murder of four individuals, including a child. The court, presided over by Principal District and Sessions Judge Rajiv Kumar Sinha, sentenced the main accused to death. Two other individuals involved in the crime received life sentences. Additionally, a fine of Rs 20,000 was imposed on each of them. The heinous act took place within the jurisdiction of the Pakartand police station.

The incident stemmed from a land dispute. On May 17, 2018, Rakesh Soreng was at his home in Nongarha Gondlipani, Pakartand, when Punit Soreng, Sanjay Soreng, and Nirmal Soreng arrived and began arguing with him over land. Nestor Soreng intervened, but the group attacked him with a ‘tangi’ (a type of blade), killing him. They then entered the house and murdered Rakesh Soreng, his wife Karmela Soreng, and their five-year-old son, Philmon Soreng, using the same weapon. Following the incident, the police apprehended the accused and sent them to jail.

After reviewing the evidence and witness testimonies presented by the Public Prosecutor Amar Chaudhary, the court found Sanjay Soreng, Nirmal Soreng, and Punit Soreng guilty. Sanjay Soreng was sentenced to death, while the other two received life imprisonment.
