  • Two hybrid terrorists arrested in Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: Security forces on Sunday arrested two ‘hybrid’ terrorists in Kulgam and Sringar districts of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

    “#KulgamPolice & Army ( 34 RR) arrested one #hybrid #terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT namely Yamin Yousaf Bhat of Gadihama Kulgam,” the Kashmir Zone Police said on its Twitter handle.

    The police said incriminating material, arms and ammunition, including a pistol, two grenades and 51 pistol rounds were recovered from his possession.

    Another ‘hybrid’ terrorist was arrested from Nowgam area of the city here, the police said.

    “On a specific input, Srinagar Police & (50 RR) arrested a hybrid terrorist namely Sheikh Sahid Gulzar of Muchhwa, Badgam from Nowgam, Srinagar,” the Srinagar Police said in a tweet.

    Incriminating material including a pistol and live ammunition was recovered from him, they said.

    A case has been registered under relevant sections, they added.

    Officials had earlier explained that a ‘hybrid terrorist’ carries out a task given to him by his handlers and then goes back to his normal work, waiting for the next assignment.

  • Jawan killed, 4 hurt in Jammu encounter; death toll in Baramula rises to 4

    SRINAGAR: Two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, an encounter erupted between militants and security forces in the Sunjwan area of Jammu in which a jawan has been killed and four others have been injured. The death toll in the Baramulla encounter has risen to four with the killing of two more militants.

    Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Mukesh Singh said security forces launched a search operation in the Sunjawan area of Jammu yesterday evening after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

    “We had reports that militants wanted to do something.  The search party of security forces came under fire from militants in the early hours today in which a security force jawan was killed and four others injured,” he said.

    The injured security men have been evacuated to Government Medical College Jammu.

    More reinforcement has been rushed to the area to tighten the siege and prevent militants from escaping from the area.

    The ADGP said it seems that militants are hiding in a house and firing on security forces from there.

    Loud explosions were heard from the area and heavy gunfire was going on.

    The administration as a precautionary measure has closed all schools in the area while the security arrangements in other parts of Jammu have been tightened and patrolling intensified.

    Meanwhile, the encounter between militants and security forces at Malwah area of Baramulla in north Kashmir entered the second day today.

    A police official said two more militants were killed in the overnight gunfight, taking the death toll of militants killed in the encounter to four.

    Among the slain militants is top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Yousuf Kantroo, who was the longest surviving LeT militant and had been active since 2020. He had twice recycled to the militancy after the arrest.

    IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar has said Kantroo was involved in the killing of several security men and civilians termed his killing a major success for security forces.

  • 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s son declared terrorist

    NEW DELHI: Hafiz Talha Saeed, the son of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind and LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, has been declared a terrorist by the government.

    In a notification, the Union home ministry said that Hafiz Talha Saeed, 46, has been actively involved in recruitment, fund collection, and planning and executing attacks by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in India and Indian interests in Afghanistan.

    He has also been actively visiting various LeT centres across Pakistan, and during his sermons propagating for jihad against India, Israel, the United States of America and Indian interests in other western countries, it stated.

    “And whereas, the central government believes that Hafiz Talha Saeed is involved in terrorism and he should be notified as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967),” the notification said.

    Hafiz Saeed was the brain behind the Mumbai terror attacks of November 26, 2008, in which 166 people were killed.

    He had been declared a terrorist under the same law a few years ago and is currently serving a jail term in Pakistan on terror charges.

    India has been consistently seeking Hafiz Saeed’s custody but Pakistan has refused to do so.

    Apart from the 26/11 attacks, the LeT has been responsible for a series of deadly attacks in India, mostly in Jammu and Kashmir, in which scores of civilians and security personnel have been killed over the years.

  • Three LeT terrorists killed in encounter with security forces in J&K’s Srinagar

    SRINAGAR: Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, who were involved in the recent killing of a sarpanch in Khonmoh, were killed in an encounter with security forces on the outskirts of the city here in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, police said.

    The security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation at Nowgam early in the morning after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area, a police spokesperson said.

    He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon the forces, who retaliated.

    “In the ensuing encounter, three categorised terrorists were killed and their bodies retrieved from the site of the encounter. They were identified as Adil Nabi Teli, a resident of Galchibal Chandhara, Pampore, Shakir Ahmad Tantray, a resident of Ronipora, Shopian, and Yasir Ahmad Wagay, a resident of Kujer Frisal, Kulgam,” the spokesperson said.

    “According to police records, the slain terrorists were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT (TRF) and were active since 2021. They were part of groups involved in several terror crime cases, including attacks on police and security forces and civilian atrocities,” the spokesperson said.

    The three men were involved in the killing of the sarpanch in Khonmoh on March 9, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said, adding that they used to carry out attacks on Panchayati Raj institution members and protected persons.

    “The killing of the three terrorists is a huge success for the police. We have busted all the modules involved in the recent killings of sarpanches, CRPF personnel etc., including that of a Territorial Army soldier of Budgam,” the IGP said.

    He said the slain ultras were planning to carry out an attack on security forces on the national highway. “Pakistan does not want the democratic process or development to continue. So they are targeting panches and sarpanches. But we are giving them a befitting reply. We are identifying them, arresting them or neutralising them in encounters,” Kumar said.

    The police spokesperson said Teli, along with his associates, was also involved in the killing of Inspector Pervaiz Ahmad Dar at Menganwari Nowgam in June last year and in the killing of Javaid Ahmed Malik at Lurgam Tral.

    Besides, he was involved in a grenade attack on a joint party of police and the CRPF at Barbarshah in Srinagar, in which one civilian was killed and three were injured.

    Tantray and Wagay were involved in several terror crime cases, including the killing of ASI Mohammad Ashraf near the Bijbehara police station in Anantnag in December last year.

    Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition, including an AK rifle, three AK magazines, 14 AK rounds, two pistols, four pistol magazines and six pistol rounds, were seized from the site of the encounter. All the seized materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.

  • LeT militant arrested in Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: Security forces on Sunday arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

    He was spotted during a naka checking near Shuhama Nagbal.

    He tried to flee after seeing the security forces team, but his attempt was foiled and he was apprehended tactfully, a police spokesman said.

    He identified the arrested as Mohammad Altaf Wani, a resident of Keegam in Shopian.

    Incriminating material was recovered from his possession, the spokesman said, adding that he was a militant of the LeT.

    A case has been registered and investigation taken up, the spokesman said.

  • Lashkar terrorist arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag, weapons recovered

    SRINAGAR: Security forces on Monday arrested a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist from Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

    A team of police and Army apprehended the active terrorist from Wahadan village of Ashmuqam area in Anantnag during a search operation, the officials said.

    They said the arrested terrorist was identified as Hafiz Abdullah Malik, who was affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF), which is believed to be a shadow outfit of LeT.

    A pistol and seven rounds were recovered from Malik’s possession at the time of his arrest while on his disclosure, the security forces recovered one AK rifle, two magazines and 40 rounds from Katsu forests.

  • Two LeT commanders among four terrorist eliminated in J-K, were involved in killing of migrant workers

    SRINAGAR: Security forces on Wednesday eliminated four militants, including two commanders of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), who were involved in the killing of migrant labourers in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

    While two ultras were killed in the encounter at Dragad in Shopian, two more were eliminated in a gunbattle in Kulgam district, a police official said, adding so far 15 terrorists have been killed in two weeks.

    One soldier lost his life while two others sustained injuries in the Shopian operation.

    “Police and Army #neutralised LeT district commander (Gulzar Ahmad Reshi) of Kulgam and one other, who were involved in #killings of two poor labourers from Bihar on 17/10/21 at Wanpoh,” IGP Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar said in a tweet.

    According to a defence spokesman, a joint operation was launched on Wednesday evening after information was received about the movement of two terrorists along the road Ashmuji-Devsar in Kulgam district “The area was cordoned off and contact established at about 07.40 PM. Repeated surrender appeals were turned down by terrorists,” the spokesman said.

    He said the ultras opened fire, forcing the security forces to retaliate.

    “In the ensuing firefight, two terrorists have been neutralised. An AK rifle and other warlike stores have been recovered,” he added.

    Earlier in the day, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Dragad area of Shopian district following information about the presence of militants there, the officials said.

    They said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the security forces who retaliated.

    The officials said two ultras of The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow outfit of Lashkar-e-Toiba, were killed.

    Three security force personnel also sustained injuries in the operation.

    One of the injured soldiers later succumbed to injuries at a hospital here, the officials said.

    One of the slain ultras was been identified as Adil Wani, who had joined the militant ranks in July 2020.

    “One of the killed #terrorists has been #identified as Adil Ah Wani, active since 7/2020…So far, 15 terrorists have been #neutralised in 2 weeks,” IGP Kumar said in another tweet.

    He said Wani was involved in the killing of Saghir Ahmad, a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, “Adil Wani was District Commander Shopian of proscribed #terror outfit LeT(TRF),” Kumar tweeted.

    Meanwhile, security forces foiled a terror plot by arresting a man with a live hand grenade in Kishtwar district on Wednesday, officials said.

    The arrested person has been identified as Sohail Ahmed Bhat of Bathri Gandoh village of Doda district.

    He is a suspected overground worker of the LeT, they said.

    During a search of vehicles and passengers, the security personnel noticed suspicious movement of one person who was trying to evade checking and frisking, sources added.

    However, alert jawans immediately overpowered him and a hand grenade was recovered from his possession, they said.

    SRINAGAR: A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant involved in the killing of a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur recently was among two utltra killed, while three security personnel were injured in an encounter in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

    IGP, Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar, said one of the slain ultras has been identified as Adil Wani, who was involved in the killing of the carpenter Sageer Ansari on Saturday last.

    Giving details of the encounter, officials said security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Dragad area of Shopian district following information about presence of militants there.

    The search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the security forces who retaliated.

    The officials said two ultras of The Resistance Front (TRF) , a shadow outfit of Lashkar-e-Toiba, have been killed while three security force personnel sustained injuries in the operation. In a tweet, the IGP said, “One of the killed #terrorists has been #identified as Adil Ah Wani, active since 7/2020. So far, 15 terrorists have been #neutralised in 2 weeks”.

    “Killed #terrorist Adil Wani was #involved in #killing of a poor carpenter namely Sakir Ah Wani S/O Gulam Kadir Wani R/O Saharanpur UP.

    Adil Wani was District Commander Shopian of proscribed #terror outfit LeT(TRF),” Kumar tweeted.

    However, in another tweet, the Kashmir Zone Police clarified that the name of the carpenter was Sageer Ahmad Ansari.

    “Kindly read, Sageer Ahmad Ansari S/O Bindo Hussain Ansari R/O Saharanpur, UP. Inconvenience regretted. @JmuKmrPolice,” it said in the tweet.

    Ansari was gunned down on Saturday in a south Kashmir village where he had been working as a carpenter for the last couple of years.

    Kashmir has witnessed a spate of targeted civilian killings that has triggered an exodus of migrant labourers who are queuing up outside bus and train stations to return home.

  • LeT militant arrested in Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: Security forces on Friday arrested a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)militant from Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police spokesperson said.

    On specific input regarding movement of terrorists in Hajin town, a joint check point was established by police, army and the CRPF in Gundjahangeer area of Hajin, the spokesperson said.

    During checking, one person behaving in a very suspicious manner was apprehended.

    “He has been identified as Muzammil Sheikh alias Abu Maviya, a resident of Chandergeer, Hajin. During his personal search, incriminating material, arms and ammunition including one Chinese pistol along with live rounds, were recovered from his possession,” the spokesperson said.

    The arrested person had joined the proscribed LeT recently and was tasked with carrying out subversive activities in and around Hajin town, he added.

  • Two militant associates of Lashkar-e-Taiba arrested in Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR: Two militant associates of Lashkar-e-Taiba were arrested in Sopore area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir in connection with a grenade explosion case, police said on Saturday.

    On December 12 last year, three civilians were injured in a grenade explosion outside the gate of Police Post Bus Stand in Sopore area of the north Kashmir district, a police official said.

    A case was registered and investigation was set into motion.

    During the course of investigation, two suspects — Mohammad Asif Najar, a resident of Noor Bagh Sopore; and Sahil Rashid Bhat, a resident of Green Town Sopore — were apprehended, the official said.

    During their questioning, he said, they confessed that they were working for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as overground workers and had thrown the grenade on the police post on the directions of LeT militants.

    The duo also confessed that they wanted to join the militant ranks, and the grenade was handed over to them to throw it on any security force/police establishments in Sopore area, the official said.

    Both have been arrested and further investigation is going on, he added.
