  • BTP pulls out of Gehlot government in Rajasthan, withdraws its 2 MLAs

    Ashok Gehlot government received another blow on Friday, with Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) withdrawing support from state govt. Yesterday, Congress party lost to BJP in Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections, despite its support to farmers protesting against new farm laws.

    BTP withdrew its 2 MLAs from Gehlot government, however, this doesn’t put latter at any risk as Congress has around 118 MLAs in 200-member assembly.

    BTP extended support to Ashok Gehlot govt during confidence vote earlier this year. The two MLA had supported Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in August when his government was under a political crisis after former deputy CM Sachin Pilot rebelled.

    Election to posts of ‘pramukh’ and ‘pradhan’ were held in 20 zila parishad and 221 gram panchayat, respectively. Not long ago, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot had alleged that BJP was making fresh attempt to topple Congress government in Rajasthan.

  • ‘Laws don’t affect APMCs or MSP of crops’, reiterates Agriculture Minister

    As the logjam continues between farmers group and government over the recently legislated farm laws, Union Agriculture Minsiter Narendra Singh Tomar is addressing media.

    The Minister’s address is allaying apprehensions of farmers and reiterated government’s commitment to their welfare.

    During the talks, many said that farm laws are invalid as agriculture is State subject and Centre can’t frame these laws. We clarified, we have the right to make laws on trade and explained it to them. APMC & MSP are not affected by it: Tomar

    Protests by farmers regarding agricultural laws continue on Thursday. Earlier on Wednesday, farmer leaders rejected the government’s proposal on new agricultural laws.     Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi has decided not to celebrate her birthday in support of farmers’ agitation against the farm laws and COVID-19 situation in the country.

    According to top sources in the party, Congress General Secretary Organisation has communicated to all the in-charges and PCC Presidents of the states that in view of the distress caused by Covid-19 pandemic across the country and amid the ongoing farmer’s agitation against the “draconian” agriculture bills Sonia Gandhi has decided not to celebrate her birthday this year.

  • Farmers to meet HM Amit Shah at 7 pm today before 6th round of talks tomorrow

    A day before the sixth round of talks between the protesting farmers and the Central government, farmer leaders have been invited to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah at 7 pm on Tuesday.

    “We have a meeting with the Home Minister at 7 pm today. We are going to Singhu Border now and from there we will go to the Home Minister,” Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait told reporters here.

    This comes even as the farmers, who have been protesting at several borders of the national capital since November 26 against the farm laws, have called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ today, which has gain support from all corners, including opposition parties and lawyers.

    Notably, after the fifth round of talks remained inconclusive, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has called another meeting on December 9. Leaders of farmer groups have held several rounds of talks with the government so far.

    Thousands of farmers are protesting against the three newly enacted farm laws — Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

  • Opposition parties support the India bandh of farmers: Prakash Javadekar

    Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has raised questions on the opposition parties that have supported the Bharat Bandh. He has alleged that the Congress had talked about introducing these laws in its manifesto.

    Prakash Javadekar said that the farmers had demanded additional benefit of the cost and we are already giving them 50 percent more than the cost. Javadekar has said that the Congress had not made any such offer during his tenure.

    He has also termed the opposition’s support as hypocrisy. He said that the opposition who are talking about withdrawing these laws are hypocritical. Because when he was in power, he passed the contract farming law. He told that the Congress had mentioned these laws in its manifesto.

  • 5th round of talks between farmers and Centre begins

    The fifth round of talks between the central government and farmers is scheduled to be held today. A large number of farmers have gathered in and around Delhi to protest against the three farm laws.

    On Thursday, the farmers held the fourth round of talks with the Centre and said the government had talked of some amendments to farm laws. In the fourth round of the meeting, farmer leaders suggested the government to hold a special session of the Parliament and sought the abolition of the three farm laws.

    Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said after the talks that the government has no ego and it was discussing the issues raised by farmers with an open mind.

    The farmers are protesting against the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

    “The government will discuss points that emerged at the meeting on Friday and hopes that talks will move towards finality when the next round of discussions are held on Saturday,” the minister had said.

    He reached out to protesting farmers over their demands, saying MSP will not be touched, the government was open to their suggestions for parity between mandis under APMC Act and that outside, for disputes under the new farm laws being adjudged in courts and for registration of traders.
