Four students from Balotra, Rajasthan, faced unexpected challenges when they traveled to Haldwani, Uttarakhand, encountering heavy rain and landslides that rendered the roads impassable. Undeterred, they devised a unique solution to reach their exam center. These students, Omaram Choudhary, Magaram Choudhary, Prakash Choudhary, and Lucky Choudhary, all pursuing a B.Ed. degree through Uttarakhand Open University, were scheduled to take their final semester exam at RS Tolia PG College in Munsiyari on September 3rd. After their road journey to Haldwani was disrupted, they learned about helicopter services and contacted Heritage Aviation. They explained that missing the exam would result in a wasted academic year. The company arranged a special helicopter with two pilots to transport them. The students successfully arrived at the exam center, completed their exam, and returned to Haldwani via helicopter. The road distance between Haldwani and Munsiyari is approximately 280 kilometers and typically takes 10 hours, while the helicopter journey was a mere 25-30 minutes. The students, now working as teachers, expressed their initial discouragement due to the challenging conditions but were able to take the exam. They found the helicopter trip thrilling and meaningful, as it marked the completion of their final semester exam.

Nature is displaying its fury around the world. While Afghanistan faced the devastation of an earthquake, Sudan, an African nation, witnessed a catastrophic event. A landslide caused immense destruction. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army reported on Monday that the landslide had caused the deaths of at least 1,000 people. The disaster was so severe that an entire village in the Marra mountain region of western Sudan was destroyed. This area is part of the Darfur region. Only one child survived.

The situation in Sudan is dire. The group led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour stated that the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall. Torrential rains on August 31st led to the landslide, which completely wiped out a village, burying it under the earth. The movement/group controls the Darfur region. They have appealed to the United Nations and international aid agencies for assistance. Thousands of people, including men, women, and children, have perished in the landslide.

Following heavy rainfall and landslides on Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in the tragic loss of life, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has placed blame on the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board for the disaster at Katra. He questioned why the pilgrimage was allowed to continue despite the adverse weather conditions, demanding accountability from the CEO of the Shrine Board and the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Choudhary described the incident as a major catastrophe, calling for significant financial aid from the Prime Minister and Home Minister. He directly held the Shrine Board responsible for the incident, asserting that the LG, as the Chairman of the board, should have been aware of the high alert status and halted the pilgrimage accordingly. Furthermore, he expressed outrage, stating that the deaths of the Vaishno Devi pilgrims were not accidental, but rather a result of a criminal conspiracy. He has requested that PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah commission a high-level investigation into the roles of LG Manoj Sinha and other officials involved, urging for strict action, including the filing of FIRs.

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in Jammu and Kashmir. A landslide on Wednesday along the route to Mata Vaishno Devi Dham in the Reasi district resulted in the deaths of at least 31 people and injuries to 23 others. Rescue operations are ongoing, with concerns that more individuals may be trapped in the debris.

The Jammu-Katra highway has been completely shut down due to the landslide. Northern Railway has canceled 22 trains and short-terminated 27 others, including 9 trains originating from the Vaishno Devi base camp.

Continuous rainfall has exacerbated the risk of floods and further landslides. The areas from Jammu city to Kathua, Udhampur, Samba, and Reasi are severely affected. Bridges have collapsed, and mobile towers and power lines have been destroyed.

Administrative authorities, the army, NDRF, and SDRF teams are engaged in relief efforts. More than 3,500 people have been moved to safer locations. Those affected are being provided with food, water, and medical assistance in temporary camps.

The weather department has issued a warning that clouds are reaching altitudes of 12 km, indicating the potential for more intense storms and rainfall in the coming days.

A second monsoon disaster has struck Jammu and Kashmir during the pilgrimage season, following the Kishtwar cloudburst on August 14th. On Wednesday, rescue teams recovered an additional 28 bodies from a landslide site along the trek to the Vaishno Devi shrine. This grim discovery brought the total number of fatalities from Tuesday’s landslides and flash floods in Reasi and Doda to 38. The majority of the victims at Ardhkuwari in Reasi were pilgrims hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Punjab. Initially, six deaths were reported at the site, with at least 20 others sustaining injuries as a result of the landslide. The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has announced ex gratia payments of Rs 9 lakh each to the families of the landslide victims. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sanctioned Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the 11 individuals from his state who perished in the Reasi landslide. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised questions regarding why district officials did not halt the pilgrims’ progress on the Vaishno Devi route amid adverse weather conditions. He expressed his sorrow and questioned the lack of protective measures for the pilgrims. Lieutenant Governor Sinha provided briefings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, updating them on the flood situation and the Union territory’s preparedness for evacuation and relief operations.

Relentless rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has triggered a devastating landslide along the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The perilous conditions on the Trikuta hills have placed visitors at significant risk due to the ongoing downpour. Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 30 individuals have tragically lost their lives in a sudden landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine. In addition to the fatalities, around 14 people have sustained injuries. Rescue operations are underway to assist those who have been trapped and isolated by the landslip. The Jammu and Kashmir government has mandated the closure of all educational institutions and offices, with the exception of essential services and law enforcement agencies, in response to the severe weather. The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting exceptionally heavy rainfall in the Jammu division over the next 40 hours. Water levels in major rivers, including the Basantar, Tawi, and Chenab, have surged to dangerous levels, heightening concerns among the local populace.
