    “Regarding any country, especially a neighboring one, we shouldn’t speak in a way that affects the relationship. We have an obligation to our state that must be considered. President Solih did consider this obligation and issued a Presidential Decree banning the “India Out” campaign. Now, Yameen is questioning why Muizzu, who participated with him in the India Out Campaign, has not nullified the Presidential Decree,” he said.

    He added, “The Decree should not be nullified, as it would only result in a loss to the nation. That cannot be done. I would tell Muizzu that it shouldn’t be done. Also, I call on President Muizzu to formally apologize to the Indian government and Prime Minister Modi regarding his remarks after the China trip.”

    New Delhi: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday appealed to China to “intensify” efforts to send more tourists to his country, amid a spate of cancellation of reservations by Indian tourists after a diplomatic row erupted over the derogatory remarks by his ministers against Prime Minister. Narendra Modi. Muizzu, who is on a five-day state visit to China, termed China as the island nation’s “closest” ally and praised its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects.

    Muizzu said that China “delivered the most significant infrastructure projects witnessed in Maldivian history”. He also said that his administration is committed to the quick implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed with China, describing it as a symbol of the close commercial ties between the two countries.

    “China remains one of our closest allies and development partners,” Muizzu said in his address to the Maldives Business Forum in Fujian Province on Tuesday. He urged China to bolster the flow of its tourists to the Maldives, which is heavily dependent on tourism for its economy.

    “China was our number one market pre-Covid, and it is my request that we intensify efforts for China to regain this position,” he said, according to a readout posted on his official website.

    Muizzu Turns To China Amid Diplomatic Row With India

    Muizzu’s appeal for more Chinese tourists came amid a diplomatic row following the derogatory remarks by some Maldivian ministers against Prime Minister Modi after he posted a video of him on a pristine beach during his recent visit to Lakshadweep. Muizzu’s government suspended three deputy ministers for their derogatory posts on social media, while the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) strongly condemned the comments.

    According to data released by the Maldives Tourism Ministry earlier, India has remained the largest tourist market for the country in 2023, followed by Russia and China. However, the recent controversy has led to a backlash from Indian tourists, who have canceled or postponed their bookings to the Maldives.

    Meanwhile, China, which held the top spot before COVID, is currently struggling to revive its domestic and foreign tourism due to a nearly four-year lockdown policy and the continued slowdown of its economy. As a result, Chinese tourists who traveled abroad for holidays in millions before COVID are now restricting themselves given the economic slowdown.

    Muizzu, who is regarded as a pro-China politician in the Maldives, told the Forum that his administration is focused on diversifying Maldives’ economic base and ensuring economic security while continuing to strengthen and drive the tourism industry and boost visitor numbers.

    He also said that his administration is committed to the quick implementation of the FTA signed with China, which aims to boost bilateral trade and investments, especially increasing Maldives’ export of fish products to China. Maldives and China signed the FTA in December 2014 during the pro-China President Abdulla Yameen administration.

    However, his successor, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration did not implement the agreement, according to Maldives media reports. China-Maldives bilateral trade in 2022 totaled to USD 451.29 million of which China’s exports constituted USD 451.29 million against USD 60,000 of exports from Maldives.

    KOCHI: The Lakshadweep administration has prohibited the gathering of more than four persons in public places and banned all types of processions in public places and roads in all its islands till further orders in the wake of the protest march proposed by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).The order, issued by S Asker Ali, IAS, in his capacity as District Magistrate, Union Territory of Lakshadweep, will be effective till further orders from 10 pm on Sunday (March 20).Ali, in his order, said the administration received intelligence reports from various sources including that of the Special Branch units of the Lakshadweep police that the proposed protest march by NCP on Monday at Kavaratti and other nine islands viz., Minicoy, Agatti, Andrott, Kalpeni, Amini, Kadmat, Chethlat, Kiltan, and Bitra may cause “disturbance to the public tranquillity and may cause rioting in the islands”.”…even though the office bearers of the Nationalist Congress Party have submitted applications for conducting the protest march by stating it as a peaceful protest, the actions done by the supporters of the said ‘protest march’ clearly shows that they are instigating the common people to do acts prejudicial to the public tranquillity and social harmony”.Asker Ali, who is also the Collector, said the present MP of Lakshadweep (Mohammed Faizal PP), who is the main organiser of the protest march, has made a provocative statement and demanded the common people of Lakshadweep to showcase their power against the administration. “He further challenged and intimidated the Administrator of UT of Lakshadweep that people of Lakshadweep will show their power against the administration ie., the government established by law”.He said the supporters of the protest march were about to meet and proceed in a procession along the public streets of the islands of the union territory and “such processions and like likely to lead a riot in the islands.”

  • Lakshadweep admin revises travel restrictions in view of Omicron

    KAVARATTI: In view of a new coronavirus variant Omicron being reported from various parts of the world, the Lakshadweep administration on Sunday revised the travel restrictions and quarantine norms in the island archipelago.

    This new variant is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations and thus, has serious public health implications for the country, the administration said in an order.

    It said that anyone wishing to visit the island archipelago shall carry with them a negative RT-PCR test report obtained within 48 hours of the travel and submit the same at the entry and exit points.

    This is applicable to crews of mechanised sailing vessels and fish collection boats also, it said.

    After reaching the islands, visitors need to follow COVID appropriate behaviour and undergo three days mandatory quarantine, it said and added that this is not applicable for those who have taken both doses of vaccine 14 days prior to their travel.

    No COVID-19 test result is required for inter-island travels for those vaccinated with two doses 14 days prior to their trip, but those who are partially or non-vaccinated not only have to carry a RT-PCR negative test report, they also have to undergo three-days mandatory quarantine.

    The other norms are that shore leave would be granted only to those ship crew who have been fully vaccinated and that thermal-scanning of passengers has to be carried out at Kochi and all ports of arrival.

    “Wearing of face masks is an essential preventive measure. In order to enforce this core requirement, any person found without wearing a mask in public/workplaces shall be levied a fine of Rs 100 at the first instance and Rs 200 at second instance of violation,” the order said.

    Deputy Collectors or Block Development Officers have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of COVID-19 appropriate behaviour in all islands at all times, it said.

    KOCHI: “No one on earth can dare to doubt the patriotism of the Muslim people in Lakshadweep. No one can put a question mark on the patriotism of the people of Lakshadweep,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.

    The Defence Minister was speaking after unveiling the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at a three-day mega fest organized by the Lakshadweep Administration in connection with the 152nd Gandhi Jayanti which culminated on Saturday. Rajnath Singh was the chief guest for the festival.

    The Defence Minister during his speech also shared the message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that although the islands of Lakshadweep are thousands of kilometers away from Delhi, the people living at Lakshadweep are not far from the hearts of the Central Government.

    Rajnath Singh also underlined the significance of cleanliness as envisaged by Mahatma and inspired the people of Lakshadweep for a behavioral change so as to ensure that the maritime ecosystem is kept clean. He also spoke on the issue of climate change and how global warming and the resulting rise in ocean levels pose a threat to the existence of Lakshadweep. The Defence Minister also congratulated the Lakshadweep Administration for the developmental works undertaken, especially in the social sector and infrastructural developments under the leadership of Praful Patel.

    Function and cultural programs at Mahatma Gandhi Stage was attended by more than six thousand people.

    The Defence Minister, who arrived at Agatti via Defence Aircraft, was accorded a warm welcome with the traditional dance of Lakshadweep and more than two thousand people had gathered at Agatti Airport for the Defence Minister’s arrival.

    Rajnath Singh who arrived at Kavaratti on Saturday was received with the formal guard of honor followed by an overwhelming welcome by more than four thousand people who were gathered on both the stretches on a 6 km road leading from Helibase to Lakshadweep House.

    As part of the national festival and in a historic milestone, the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled and dedicated to the nation by the Defence Minister.

    Member of Parliament of Lakshadweep Constituency, PP Mohammad Faizal and the Chairman of the Village Dweep Panchayat were also present during the Lokarpan ceremony.

    Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel greeted the gathering in Malayalam amidst a huge round of applause from the public and shared the ideals of Bapu and the relevance of Gandhiji in the present times especially in making the Atmanirbhar Bharat. Patel also briefed the people about the various initiatives of the Lakshadweep Administration in fields of clean energy, health, education, tourism, poverty alleviation and others.

    During the state function, while listing various initiatives taken up by the Administration such as the development of four new hospitals, expansion of Agatti airport, construction of new Government Senior Secondary School at Kavaratti, and others, the Administrator also shared the commitment of the Administration in removing illegal encroachment on government land by few people having vested interests so that the Administration may plan for a housing scheme for the landless residents and for those who are not having proper houses.

    The state function also became the platform for the inauguration of Government Nursing College, Kavaratti, Paramedical College, Kavaratti, Polytechnic College, Minicoy, the fourth PSA Oxygen Plant in Lakshadweep at CHC, Androth, distribution of agricultural implements to farmers, and for laying of the foundation stones for the landing stations of KLI Optical Fiber Connectivity Project of the Central Government worth Rs 1,073 crore in four islands.
