  • Lakhimpur violence case: SIT releases photos of six suspects

    LUCKNOW: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case on Tuesday released pictures of six people standing near an SUV, which was set ablaze during the October 3 incident.

    It has assured that details of those giving information will not be revealed besides informers will be given due rewards.

    The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh had set up the SIT to investigate the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed.

    “The SIT team probing the October 3 violence has got some photos and videos. We are releasing photographs and appeal to people to identify them,” an SIT official said.

    “Six photographs have been released for identification,” he said.

    The SIT has already issued notices to over three dozen farmers for questioning in a case related to the lynching of BJP workers.

    Two FIRs were registered at the Tikonia police station after eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the violence.

    In the first FIR, MoS Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish was named as accused besides 15 to 20 unidentified persons.

    Another FIR was lodged at the same police station on the basis of a complaint by Sumit Jaiswal, who has now been arrested.

    In the complaint, Jaiswal, a resident of Ayodhyapuri here, identified himself as a BJP worker who was on his way to welcome Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya for a wrestling event at Banbirpur, when the violence broke out.

    So far, 10 people, including the MoS’ son Ashish Mishra, have been arrested in the case.

    The farmers alleged that Ashish Misra was present in one of the vehicles during the incident, a charge which has been denied by him.

    The minister’s son claimed he was present in Banbirpur village at the time to attend a wrestling event.

    Among eight killed, four were farmers, one was a local journalist and three were BJP workers.

  • SC criticizes Yogi govt’s probe in Lakhimpur violence case, asks why accused not arrested yet

    Unsatisfied over the handling of the Lakhimpur violence case, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government why the accused, Ashish Mishra, wasn’t arrested despite an FIR filed against him.

    During the suo-motu hearing on Lakhimpur Kheri violence, the Supreme Court said “it is a brutal murder of eight persons and the law must take its course against all accused.”

    ​The apex court also urged the state government to “take necessary steps due to the sensitivity of the issue.”

    Four farmers were mowed down by an SUV in Lakhimpur Kheri when a group agitating against the Centre’s three new farm laws was holding a demonstration against the visit of UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

    The car, later identified, belonged to Ajay Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra.

    Meanwhile, the Supreme Court noted that senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, has assured it that the highest police officer in the State will be informed to preserve the evidence in the case.

  • As SC intervenes in Lakhimpur violence case, Mayawati says ‘there is hope for justice’

    LUCKNOW: BSP supremo Mayawati said on Thursday that there is hope for justice in the Lakhimpur violence case as the Supreme Court has intervened in the matter and sought a status report from the Uttar Pradesh government.

    She said a delegation of the BSP led by party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP SC Mishra will be meeting the families of the farmers killed in the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

    “The hearing started by the Supreme Court in the Lakhimpur incident gave hope to the people for relief and proper justice, as the attitude of the BJP government in this matter appeared mostly biased,” Mayawati said in a tweet in Hindi.

    Her remarks came a few hours after the Supreme Court on Thursday sought a status report by Friday from the Uttar Pradesh government on the accused named by the police in the FIR and whether they have been arrested.

    The apex court has also sought details of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the judicial enquiry commission, reportedly set up by the state government.

    In another tweet, the BSP chief asserted that there is palpable anger among people over the deaths of the farmers and a journalist.

    Two BJP workers and a driver were beaten to death allegedly by the angry protesters, while a local journalist was also killed in the violence.

    An FIR under section 302 of IPC (murder) has been registered against Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra and others in the incident in Tikonia police station but no arrest has been made so far.

    Farmer leaders have claimed that Ashish was in one of the cars that allegedly knocked down the protesters but the minister has denied the allegations.
