  • BJP sarpanch arrested for brandishing pistol at patrolling team in Kashmir

    SRINAGAR:

    SRINAGAR: A BJP sarpanch along with one other person was arrested for brandishing his pistol at a patrolling team of security forces in Kulgam in south Kashmir on Wednesday evening. The duo was on a motorcycle bearing registration No PB-H-1118 and were coming from Khudwani when they were stopped by a joint patrol party of Army’s 1 Rashtriya Rifles and the police. 

    Identified as Aqib Shafi Badder, he showed his pistol to the patrolling team when they signalled to stop him and tried to escape from the area, a police spokersperson said. “A pistol, two magzines and 12 rounds were recovered from the duo. 

    The other person was identified as Mohammed Amin Hajam, a resident of Anantnag. The security forces have registered an FIR under relevant sections of law against the duo. 

    BJP district president Kulgam Abid Hussain Khan confirmed with the New Indian Express that sarpanch Aqib Shafi had joined the party about five months back.“However, unfortunately we had no information that he had been a stone pelter, an FIR stands registered against him and he was an Over Ground worker of militants,” he said.

    Khan said police did not inform the party that he was a stone pelter and had received pellets in his left eye during security forces action.

  • BJP worker shot dead by militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: Militants on Tuesday shot dead a BJP worker in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

    The assailants fired upon Javeed Ahmad Dar near his residence in Brazloo Jageer area of the south Kashmir district at around 4.30 pm, they said.

    Dar, who was affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, died on the spot, they added.

    Security forces have cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants, they said.

  • Two security personnel, two civilians injured in encounter between forces, militants in J-K’s Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: Four people, including two security personnel, were injured in an encounter that broke out between militants and security forces on Thursday after the ultras fired upon a BSF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.

    “Terrorists opened fire on a BSF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Malpora in the Qazigund area of Kulgam,” they said.

    The officials said the convoy was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu.

    A police spokesperson said there were no injuries in the initial attack but the assailants were trapped as a cordon was laid around the area.

    “Terrorists fired upon BSF convoy at NHW #Kulgam. No injury reported. However, terrorists trapped,” the police quoted IGP, Kashmir Vijay Kumar as saying.

    The spokesperson said reinforcements were called in as senior officers of the police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Army were also present on the spot.

    The officials said after the evacuation of civilians from the area, a gunbattle broke out between the security forces and the ultras.

    A CRPF jawan and an Army jawan were injured in the exchange of fire, which was intermittently going on between the two sides, they added.

    Meanwhile, two civilians with bullet injuries were brought to a hospital in Anantnag for treatment, the officials said.

  • One policeman dead, two injured in terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: One policeman was killed and two others were injured after terrorists fired “indiscriminately” on a police party at a crossing in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

    They said the policemen came under attack when they were busy in managing the traffic at Adijan Crossing on their way back after escorting former minister Abdul Majid Padar to his residence.

    “Terrorists attacked the police party at Pombai in Damhal Hanjipora in Kulgam district by opening fire, resulting in injuries to three cops,” one of the officials said.

    They said one of the injured policemen, identified as Nisar Ahmad Wagay, succumbed to injuries while being taken to a hospital.

    Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a hunt for the attackers, the officials added.

    A police spokesman said preliminary investigation revealed that, a group of terrorists fired upon a police party headed by the local station house officer.

    “In this terror incident, three police personnel sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment,” the spokesman said.

    However, constable Nisar Ahmad Wagay succumbed to injuries, he added.

    “Taking undue advantage of a huge traffic jam and presence of a large number of civilians, the terrorists fired indiscriminately upon the SHO and his escort party and managed to escape from the spot.

    “However, to avoid collateral damage in view of huge rush, the police party exercised maximum restraint,” he said.

  • Encounter underway between militants and security forces in J&K’s Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said.

    Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Redwani area of Kulgam, in south Kashmir, during the night after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

    He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired at security forces.

    The security forces retaliated and the exchange of firing was going on, the official said, adding further details are awaited.

    This is the second gunfight in Kulgam district and the third in south Kashmir in the last two days.

    Four militants were killed in two encounters with security forces in south Kashmir on Thursday.

  • Three LeT militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, police said.

    Two Army soldiers were also injured in the exchange of fire in Kulgam’s Chimmer village, they said.

    While two militants were killed in the early exchange of fire, the third engaged the security forces for several hours before being neutralised, a police official said.

    Giving details of the operation, a police spokesperson said a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Army in Chimmer after receiving information about the presence of militants there.

    During the search operation, after the presence of terrorists was ascertained, they were repeatedly asked to surrender.

    However, they opened indiscriminate fire on the joint search party in which two Army soldiers were injured.

    They were airlifted to the Army’s hospital in Srinagar, he said.

    The security forces retaliated, the spokesperson said.

    “In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.

    They have been identified as Waseem Ahmad Bangroo, a resident of Redwani in Kulgam; Shahnawaz Ahmad, a resident of Kilbal in Shopian; and Zakir Bashir, a resident of Chimmer in Kulgam.

    All of them were affiliated with proscribed terror group LeT,” he said.

    Bashir had recently joined the terror group, the spokesperson said.

    According to police records, all three terrorists killed in the encounter were part of a group involved in various terror crimes, he said.

  • Hizbul Mujahideen militant nabbed in Kulgam

    SRINAGAR: Security forces have arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Friday.

    The arrest happened after the forces launched a cordon and search operation in Frisal area of Kulgam following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said.

    “During the search, an active categorized terrorist, Zakir Bhat, of proscribed terror outfit HM was arrested. Investigations reveal that Zakir Bhat is basically a resident of Kulgam district and living in Shopian since last 8 years,” the spokesman said.

    He said that incriminating material including arms and ammunition have also been recovered from his possession.

    A case has been registered and further investigation is in progress, the officer said.

    Meanwhile, militants opened fire on security forces during a cordon and search operation at Usmanabad-Warpora in Sopore Police district, the spokesman said.

    He said the militants escaped from the spot after a brief exchange of fire.

    “Reinforcements of security forces arrived and nearby orchard has been cordoned. The search operation is going on,” he added.

  • Four soldiers injured in grenade attack by militants in J-K’s Kulgam

    Four soldiers have sustained splinter injuries in a grenade attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam.

    The militants lobbed grenade on Army’s Road Opening Party during sanitisation drill at 10.15 AM today in the area of Shamshipura, Khanabal, Kulgam.

    The injured soliders  have been given first aid & evacuated to 92 BaseHospital.

    On January 3, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army’s 34 Rashtriya Rifles had arrested a terror associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for being involved in providing shelter, logistics and other support to terrorists, which included transportation of arms and explosive material Kulgam.

  • 12 terrorists surrendered during encounters with security forces in J-K this year

    Kulgam (Jammu and Kashmir): This year Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar said that this year twelve militants have surrendered during a live encounter with the security forces.

    Earlier today, two local militants belonging to the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) surrendered during an encounter with security forces in Kulgam today.

    “Two LeT militants surrendered during a live encounter in Kulgam. So far 12 militants have surrendered during a live encounter with security forces this year. During the encounter at Tongdonu in Kulgam, both militants surrendered and the police recovered substandard material including two pistols and ammunition from them.

  • Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter in Kulgam, security forces killed two terrorists

     An encounter is going on between security forces and terrorists in Kulgam of Jammu and Kashmir. In this encounter, the security forces have killed two terrorists so far. Kashmir zone police has confirmed the death of two terrorists. However, the identity of the slain terrorists is not known yet. Operation of security forces is still going on in the area. Many more terrorists are suspected to be hiding here. 

    It is being told that in the early hours of today, security forces were informed about the presence of terrorists in Chingam of Kulgam. After which the security forces started a search operation in the area. Then the terrorists started firing on the soldiers and then the encounter started. So far, two terrorists have been piled by security forces in this encounter.

    Earlier on Wednesday, three terrorists were killed by security forces during an encounter in Shopian district. According to the police, on receipt of the presence of the terrorists, security forces conducted a search operation in Sugan village of Janapora on Tuesday evening. The search operation turned into an encounter when the militants opened fire on the security forces. Three militants were killed in an encounter that ended on Wednesday morning.
