    By PTI
KOTA: A man hacked his wife to death and dragged her body for several metres on the street here, police said on Wednesday, adding that their infant son, who was injured in the attack, died at a hospital later.

The accused, Sunil Valmiki (40) alias Pintu, went absconding after the incident that took place on Tuesday night in Bhatapura area of Rampura, they said.

On Tuesday afternoon, he picked his wife, Seema (35), and their nine-month-old son, Avinash, from her brother’s house.

Their elder son, aged nine years, stayed back with his uncle and grandmother.

After an argument in the evening, the accused attacked Seema with an axe, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer Ram Kalyan said, adding the woman died on the spot.

The accused then dragged her body for 70 to 80 metres on the street, triggering panic among the people, the DSP said.

Leaving the body on the street, he moved towards Rampura police station apparently to confess to the crime but ran away, Station House Officer Hansraj Meena said.

Avinash was injured in the incident and died during treatment at a hospital on Wednesday morning, police said.

However, it was not clear how the infant suffered injuries, they added.

The bodies of the woman and the child were sent for postmortem.

The man, a daily wager, was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and efforts were on to nab him, police said.

Seema and Sunil got married around 15 years ago and had two sons.

  • These Kota sisters live in a void, face harsh future

    Express News Service
JAIPUR:  The suddenness of losing one’s parents in a matter of days is a tragedy multiplied a hundred times over. Ask Poorvi (26) and Riya (24), who saw their Covid-stricken parents lurch into lifelessness. One final clasp of Riya’s hand by her mother as tight as it could have been and it was all over on April 29. She stood still for many, many moments. Then, she moved, all alone, to cremate her because Poorvi, her elder sister, was with their father, fighting a losing battle.

Till about a month back, the Kota family had everything a middle-class family aspires. Shyam and Mahima Maheshwari ran a hostel for students, Poorvi, an IT engineer, had a job in Noida and Riya had finished her Mass Comm. Things changed on April 24 when Riya called up to say that their mother had been hospitalised. Poorvi says their mother caught the infection from their father who was suffering from high fever after he got vaccinated.

For about a week, the couple was under treatment of a doctor, a relative, at their home. But their conditions worsened and they were admitted to the new Medical College Hospital, Kota. While their father Shyam tested positive, their mother’s report was negative initially though her chest CT Scan revealed that she had pneumonia. Poorvi says a week before he was admitted to the hospital, he had got vaccinated. Before that he had no illness nor did he suffer from any symptoms. “We don’t know if it was the vaccine that got him into trouble or whether he already had the infection when he got himself vaccinated,” says Poorvi.

It was their mother’s condition that turned grave in the ICU. She collapsed on April 29. But the sisters had to hide it from their father who was battling Covid in a different ward. “I was in the ICU with my mom while Didi was taking care of our father. My mother held my hand tightly just before she passed away. I did her cremation alone as we did not want Papa to be left alone,” recalls Riya. Soon, their father’s condition began to deteriorate. Though the sisters tried desperately, they simply could not get an ICU bed for him. Poorvi believes had their father got an ICU bed, he might have recovered.

On May 9, he died. The sisters jointly arranged their father’s cremation. “We just don’t know how to cope with this situation. We have lost words to explain our feelings,” says a sobbing Poorvi. Riya, a Mass Comm graduate, had already lost her job in the wake of the Corona-induced slowdown, while Poorvi works in Noida. They don’t have enough money to pay the rent of their house as the earnings of their parents had declined sharply during the pandemic.

  • Kota coaching centres reopen, but Covid worries persist

    By Express News Service
JAIPUR: Kota, the hub of engineering and medical entrance coaching institutes, is regaining momentum after a gap of 10 months after it was shut due to the Corona crisis.

Big hoardings with pictures of IIT entrance toppers from various educational institutes at various places of the city could be seen to lure aspirants and their parents.

Nearly 32,000 students have already reached Kota after the Gehlot government allowed schools, colleges and coaching centres to reopen from January 18 taking into account the declining number of Covid-19 cases in the state.

A large number of students are arriving every day in Kota to study at the top 10 coaching institutes that dot the city’s landscape. Kota has about 50 other institutes and the city has around 25,000 paying guest (PG) facilities and 3,000 hostels and around 3,000 messes to cater to all needs of the nearly two lakh students from across the country. To ensure the safety of all students, the coaching city has turned into a caring city. Ultra-violet hand sanitisers, Aarogya Setu-like apps to monitor student’s health, social distancing norms with isolated seating arrangements and plush studio apartments are some of the measures the coaching institutes have set up.

However, the number of Corona cases in Kota remains a big worry. Kota has the second-highest number of active Covid cases in Rajasthan, and on Monday it reported 41 fresh cases — the highest in the state. Among the 41 new cases are 14 coaching students. Of the 33 new cases found in Kota on Tuesday, 18 were coaching students, and on Wednesday, Kota reported 34 cases.

The CMHO of Kota, Dr B S Tanwar said according to the doctor, 18 students were asymptomatic and found positive when 2,500 samples were taken from coaching institutes.

The Kota district administration has instructed all coaching institutes and hostel authorities to strictly follow the standard operating protocols that have been issued to them. The protocols were decided after consulting heads of institutes and hostels who raised the issue of incurring losses and urged the state authorities to allow them to open up coaching centres.

The detailed SOPs have been pasted on the walls of all coaching centres, who in turn, have informed the students about the guidelines they need to follow such as ‘no mask, no entry’ rule. All coaching centres, hostels and messes have also been told to abide by the Covid-19 protocols set by the central and state governments.

    By PTI
KOTA: A 27-year-old man was sentenced to life in jail till death for raping three five-to-nine-year-old girls in his village under Simliya police station area of Kota district over three years ago.

A special court set up under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act sentenced Mithun alias Gajendra Rao after convicting him of the offence of rape and various other offences under the POCSO Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Public Prosecutor Suresh Verma said on Tuesday.

Special Judge Hanuman Prasad convicted Rao on Monday while observing that “no unnecessary compassion should be displayed” while sentencing such criminals who “affect the entire judicial system and also obliterate public sentiments”.

The public prosecutor said the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict.

The case against Rao was lodged in July 2017 on the complaint of the mother of a nine-year-old girl, accusing him of raping her daughter.

During the investigation of the case, it transpired that Rao had also raped two other girls of the village, aged five and seven years respectively.

The police subsequently filed the charge-sheet in the case indicting Rao of all three rapes.
