  • We are going to learn from it: KKR all-rounder Andre Russell after defeat against Mumbai Indians

    By ANI
CHENNAI: After a disappointing 10-run defeat against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell said that the side will learn from their mistakes and will do better in the coming games.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to an all-rounder bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Russell’s five-wicket haul had bundled Mumbai Indians out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR were restricted to 142/7.

KKR were right on the track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match.

“Yeah, I support that (Shah Rukh Khan) tweet but at the end of the day the game of cricket… you are not sure until it’s over. I think we are still confident, we still played some good cricket and I am proud of the boys. You know, we are definitely disappointed but it’s not the end of the road, it’s only the second game and we are going to learn from it,” Russell said in the virtual post-match press conference.

“I just think it’s a game of cricket. I have played hundreds of T20 games and I have seen games where teams cruise in on the driver’s seat and then suddenly lose a few wickets, new batters come in and struggle to get away and that’s what happened tonight,” he said.

“So, we definitely have to learn from this as I have said before. We will look to make sure that who’s in, stays in and once we learn from all these mistakes that happened tonight we will definitely do better because we have a good team. I have trust and confidence in the boys,” the all-rounder added.

Rusell further said the wicket was not the easiest to bat on and for him also it was challenging.

“You have to try and stay as still as possible, be open-minded. It is a difficult wicket to bat on and it is not easy for a new batsman to come in and start the hitting from ball one. It is very challenging, even for me the ball was a bit up and down. It is not the easiest wicket to bat on, no matter how good you are you still need a couple of balls to actually get your eye in,” he said.

KKR will next play against Royal Challengers Bangalore here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 18.

  • Confidence will go high after great team effort against KKR: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: After a win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said that the team’s confidence will go high from here and termed the victory as a “great team effort”.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to an all-round bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Andre Russell’s five-wicket haul saw Mumbai Indians get bundled out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR was restricted to 142/7.

KKR was right on track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match.

“It was a great team effort. Everyone chipped in with the performances which are always nice when you have team performances like that. The confidence can only go high from here. I’m very proud of the boys,” Rohit said in a video posted by MI’s official Twitter handle.

“When you win a game like, it is always nice and shows that the team has a lot of fight in it. A lot of credit has to go to our bowling coach,” he added.

Rohit also bowled one over in the match, however, he twisted his ankle on the way to delivering his first ball but it wasn’t that serious and he continued the over. He gave 14 runs off that over.

“I enjoyed my one over. It was after a long time but I thought I could just get in and bowl that over with two left-handers and the pitch not seeming easy for the batters. I thought it will a great idea and a lot of guys from the team backed me to bowl that over,” he said.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene lauded the bowling unit for their fightback in the game and added that they are adapting to the conditions.

“Credit to Rohit and the team, the way they handled the situation there in the middle. Definitely in the second half, we had to dig deep. The bowling unit kept us in the game and created few opportunities. At the end, we managed to cross over the line. We needed that win, just to get on the board. It is not the easiest conditions, so we need to be better adapting to these conditions. I think the bowling unit was fantastic,” he said.

“Even in the first game, they kept us in the game. Today was a great effort, especially Rahul to come back strongly picking up those wickets in the middle. Gave us that crucial breakthrough as well and then Bumrah, Krunal bowling at the back end and Boult coming in at the end just to finish things off,” Jayawardene added.

Mumbai Indians will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

  • Not many sides can defend 31 from 30 balls: Virender Sehwag hails Mumbai Indians’ effort against KKR

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: As Mumbai Indians achieved an improbable win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday, former India batsman Virender Sehwag lauded the effort of Rohit Sharma’s boys.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to a spirited bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Russell’s five-wicket haul saw Mumbai Indians bundled out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR was restricted to 142/7.

“MI to KKR- Dekha aapne laparwahi ka.natija. To defend 31 from 30 balls with 7 wickets of the opposition in hand is something which not many sides can defend. Brilliant bowling display from @mipaltan,” tweeted Sehwag.

KKR was right on the track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match by 10 runs.

Krunal Pandya bowled economically and just gave 13 runs in his four overs and picked the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. Rahul Chahar returned with the figures of 4-27 in his four overs and he was named the Player of the Match.

“We both bowled well. Krunal did not give many runs in his spell. In the last match it was not like this but this time there was help from the wicket for spinners. We will play the main role if we get these kinds of wickets,” said Chahar during the post-match press conference on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

  • MI-possible with spin and pace

    By Express News Service
With only 152 runs to defend, Mumbai Indians snatched the game away from Kolkata Knight Riders in stunning fashion to post a 10-run victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. Chasing the target, Kolkata were coasting at 122-4, needing 31 off the last five overs with Shakib Al Hasan and Dinesh Karthik in the middle and Andre Russell yet to bat. But lost three wickets and scored only 20 runs in a dramatic turnaround.

Spinners Rahul Chahar (4-0-27-4) and Krunal Pandya (4-0-13-1) did most of the damage as Kolkata scored just one boundary in the last five overs as Mumbai got off the jail to get their first win of the season. Kolkata’s struggles actually began a lot early when Nitish Rana departed after making 57 as Mumbai began to get a grip of the game.

Brief scores: MI 152 (Suryakumar 53, Rohit 43, Russell 5/15) bt KKR 142/7 in 20 ovs (Rana 57, Chahar 4/27).

  • Kolkata Knight Riders bowl out Mumbai Indians for 152 as Russell takes five

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Andre Russell did a star turn coming to bowl in the 18th over as his career-best 5 for 15 helped Kolkata Knight Riders blow out Mumbai Indians for 152 in an Indian Premier League game on Tuesday.

Opting to bowl, Eoin Morgan’s astute captaincy was on full display as he used his resources to perfection to choke MI in the middle-overs after Suryakumar Yadav threatened to seize control with his 36-ball 56.

The World Cup-winning England skipper used Pat Cummins cleverly in the middle-overs as the Aussie returned with 2/24, but the masterstroke was certainly keeping Russell for the fag end as MI lost last seven wickets for 37 runs.

Russell was brought in only after Cummins finished his spell in the 16th over as the Jamaican used the platform to perfection by dismissing Krunal Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Chahar in the final four balls en route to his milestone.

But it was Shakib-Al-Hasan who deserves equal credit for stopping the run-flow as the Bangladesh left-arm spinner dismissed Suryakumar in the 11th over and changed the complexion of the innings.

Suryakumar was in the midst of a belter of an innings, smashing two sixes and seven fours to lift them from a sluggish start as MI looked in balance with 81/1 at midway stage.

He was on a roll against Prasidh Krishna, creaming the seamer for a six and followed it up for successive boundaries.

Suryakumar then launched into Pat Cummins for a 99-metre maximum that landed on the Chepauk roof to cruise to a 33-ball fifty, his 12th in IPL.

Before he could make it big, he holed out a skier to Shubman Gill at long-on.

And off the next ball, Cummins laid a perfect trap for Ishan Kishan with a bouncer which the diminutive left-hander pulled straight to square leg fielder.

As Prasidh leaked runs, the spin duo of Varun and Shakib managed to keep the duo of Rohit and Hardik quiet in the middle overs as they scored only 33 runs from 10-15 overs.

Looking for breakthrough, Morgan once again brought in his pace spearhead Cummins who lived up to his expectation cleaning up Rohit with an offcutter, and in the next over Prasidh dismissed Hardik to break MI’s backbone.

  • I am fortunate as KKR has some of the biggest hitters: Prasidh Krishna

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Prasidh Krishna has said he feels fortunate as his side has some of the biggest hitters in the game and he does not have to bowl against them in Indian Premier League (IPL).

Prasidh returned with two wickets on Sunday as KKR defeated SunRisers Hyderabad by 10 runs in the third game of the IPL 2021 here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

“I was trying my best to get the pace up. There wasn’t much in the wicket and I had to put in something to get the ball to the keeper. We had a very good 10-day camp to get everyone into good nick and it’s nice that everyone has chipped in. The wicket was slow, not easy to hit off a length which I realised while bowling and they (Rana and Tripathi) did really well,” Prasidh told host broadcaster Star Sports at the end of the game.

“Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali and all those games have gotten me game time and helped me with my performances. Confidence is upbeat now because I am coming off a good series and I hope to contribute further for my team. Some of the biggest hitters are in my side, so I am quite fortunate. But all the players are down to earth and it’s really nice being part of this team,” he added.

SRH suffered a 10-run defeat against KKR after Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi’s knocks of 80 and 53 were backed by a spirited bowling performance by the Eoin Morgan-led side.

Earlier, Rana and Tripathi played knocks of 80 and 53 respectively as KKR posted a total of 187/6 in the allotted twenty overs. Andre Russell (5) failed to leave a mark with the bat as he was dismissed by Rashid Khan. In the final two overs, Dinesh Karthik (22*) managed to add a few crucial runs and KKR’s total went beyond the 185-run mark.

  • KKR vs SRH: It was for my friends, says Nitish Rana on celebration post fifty

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsman Nitish Rana said that his celebration after scoring a half-century against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) was dedicated to his friends.

Rana and Rahul Tripathi’s knocks of 80 and 53 were backed by a spirited bowling performance as KKR triumphed over SRH by 10 runs here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. KKR first posted a total of 187/6 in the allotted twenty overs and then the bowlers managed to restrict SRH to 177/5.

“Feels good to start the season on a high note. I will try to carry this form and help the side as much as possible. The wicket was fresh so I played cautiously in the first few overs and then when I saw the ball is in my zone, I started hitting them. I was trying to hit the loose balls,” Rana said in a video posted by the official website of the IPL.

When Harbhajan Singh asked what does his celebration mean after the half-century, Rana said, “It was for my friends. My friends love the song Brown Munde and before the season began I told them when I do this (celebration), it will mean that we all are brown munde.”

For Eoin Morgan’s side, Prasidh Krishna managed to take two wickets. For SRH, Jonny Bairstow and Manish Pandey played knocks of 55 and 61 respectively. This win was also KKR’s 100th in the IPL.

Morgan heaped praises on Rana and said he played a match-winning knock for the side.

“I’m delighted for Nitish. Obviously, a match-winning innings today. The thing that impressed me the most about his innings was the method he used, played really aggressively and always took a positive option which really did set up our batting innings,” Morgan said while replying to an ANI query in a virtual press conference after the game.

  • Nitish Rana played match-winning innings for us: KKR skipper Eoin Morgan

    By ANI
CHENNAI: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan was delighted with the way Nitish Rana batted against the SunRisers Hyderabad and said that he played a match-winning knock for the side.

Rana and Rahul Tripathi’s knocks of 80 and 53 were backed by a spirited bowling performance as KKR triumphed over SRH by 10 runs here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. KKR first posted a total of 187/6 in the allotted twenty overs and then the bowlers managed to restrict SRH to 177/5.

“I’m delighted for Nitish. Obviously, a match-winning innings today. The thing that impressed me the most about his innings was the method he used, played really aggressively and always took a positive option which really did set up our batting innings,” Morgan said while replying to an ANI query in a virtual press conference after the game.

When asked about the batting position of Dinesh Karthik after he smashed 22 off nine balls coming out at number six, Morgan said, “Dinesh is happy with where he is at the moment. We are in regular conversation with him being vice-captain and me being the captain. One of the many strengths within our squad and two of the most talented guys in the country opening the batting for us. Tripathi at three played beautifully and the middle-order we have is extremely versatile. When Dinesh plays like that or Russell plays in the way he can play, it is obviously the destructive batting unit that has potential to win matches.”

Seasoned spinner Harbhajan Singh just bowled one over in the game and Morgan said despite that he did not finish his spell he played a role by motivating players around him.

“It’s more to do with the match-ups. We analysed the opposition batsmen and him bowling the first over was a plan based on that. He created an opportunity, but unfortunately the catch was dropped. The role he played from thereon was outstanding. He used his experience, spoke to the players and lent his hand wherever needed. From the time he has arrived in the camp, he has shown more energy than anyone else. Hopefully, he can continue doing that and keep bowling beautifully the way he has been,” he said.

When asked about the challenges of the bubble life, England skipper said, “Everyone within the squad, backroom staff and coaches are aware of how tough the bubble life is and the challenges it presents. It’s tough at different stages and particularly when you aren’t playing. Working hard and waiting for an opportunity could be a challenge.

“Having been in that position myself, I think the mind is waiting for that opportunity and trying to manage how you spend your energies. Often, if you aren’t in a good headspace, then you don’t take the opportunity when it arrives. There are regular conversations going on about the players’ welfare at the moment,” he added.

  • Manish Pandey’s efforts go in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Opener Nitish Rana (80) and Rahul Tripathi (53) hit fluent half-centuries to script Kolkata Knight Rides’ a comfortable 10-run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League match, here on Sunday.

SRH’s Rashid Khan (2/24) was yet again at his best, asking tough questions to the KKR batsmen but most of his bowling colleagues proved ineffective on a slow yet decent batting wicket.

Hyderabad lost skipper David Warner (3) and Wriddhiman Saha (7) early and were always playing a catch-up game despite Jonny Bairstow’s fighting half-century.

They could manage 177 for five in the end.

Warner was dropped on nought by Pat Cummins in the first over bowled by Harbhajan Singh but he could not make good use of the life and became a victim of pacer Prasidh Krishna while Saha was cleaned up by Shakib Al Hasan.

Jonny Bairstow (55) and Manish Pandey (61 not out) formed a partnership at a steady run rate.

Australian pacer Cummins broke their 92-run stand when he had Bairstow caught at backward point by Rana.

SRH needed 70 off the last five overs.

Mohammed Nabi (14) was hit on his neck by Krishna but the Afghan responded with a cracking six.

He went after a slower one but only to be caught by Eoin Morgan.

The 19-year-old Abdul Samad, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, creamed off two sixes and a four off Cummins in the penultimate over to keep SRH in hunt.

Requiring 22 runs from the last over, KKR’s Andre Russell held his nerves to deny SRH a win.

Earlier, left-handed opener Rana struck the ball hard and clean to provide his side a confident start after they were asked to take first strike.

His strokes on the off-side — the drives and cuts – were of highest quality and a treat to the eye.

Neither Bhuvneshwar Kumar nor T Natarajan could stop Rana from hitting boundaries even as Subhman Gill was quiet initially.

Sandeep Sharma was hit for three boundaries in a row by him.

Gill opened up his arms to hit a massive straight six off Natarajan to make it even better for KKR.

However, the run-flow was affected when ever-reliable Rashid got the ball in his hands.

He also provided the breakthrough when he deceived Gill with a wrong’un to find the stumps.

Rana though kept going strong, completing his half-century with a six off Vijay Shankar after surviving an LBW appeal off Rashid.

He got the decision overturned, taking the DRS call.

Rana’s six-hitting continued after getting his fifty as he punished Natarajan and Sandeep again.

His colleague at the other end Rahul Tripathi also stroked confidently and fluently.

He smashed a massive six off Bhuvneshwar and then followed it up with a cheeky four in the third-man region.

He completed his fifty with another boundary off Bhuvneshwar but was dismissed by Natarajan soon after when he top-edged a ball.

Rashid too sent back dangerous Andre Russell (5) back.

Mohammed Nabi (2/32) got rid of Rana and Eoin Morgan (2) off successive balls in the 18th over.
