KKR take on RCB today in Match 36 of IPL 2024 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. We are halfway into the league and RCB are still looking for their second win of the season. That tells you about the kind of campaign they have had so far. Apart from Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, no one has really stepped up for them on a consistent basis. On the other hand, KKR have been very consistent, with all their departments clicking. When it comes to making your fantasy team app, you cannot miss out on some of the in-form players.

As far as availability of the players is concerned, Glenn Maxwell has opted out of IPL 2024 due to mental fatigue. Whether he returns to play today or not is not clear. KKR have not played Nitish Rana yet. He is said to be fit but maybe KKR do not want to break the current combination to fit him in. Rinku Singh said that he is fit again to take part in a full-fledged match.

  • Social media needs to be a kinder place: KKR’s Dinesh Karthik slams trolls on RCB players

    By ANI

SHARJAH: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has said people don’t realise the gravity of what they post when they are on social media.

Say NO to hate-mongering.Cricketers are subjected to online-abuse way too often. It’s high time we take a strong stand against it.Victories and Losses are a part of any sport. We stand by you @RCBTweets @danchristian54 @Gmaxi_32. We’ve been there too #IPL2021 pic.twitter.com/eCUGroEbyI
    — KolkataKnightRiders (@KKRiders) October 12, 2021
In a video posted by KKR on Twitter on Tuesday, regarding the ‘hate-mongering’ players receive on social media, Karthik was seen expressing his disappointment regarding the same. “I feel sometimes that social media needs to be a kinder place. I think people don’t realise the gravity of what they say, be it memes, videos or just the use of words. It’s a spur of moment thing for them, instinctively what they feel they just put out there,” said the wicket-keeper batter.

Karthik also said these people don’t realise that what the other person has to go through because of their actions.

Earlier on Monday, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) all-rounder Daniel Christian and his partner Jorgia Dunn received flak from a certain section of fans following the team’s defeat in the Eliminator of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

KKR came in support of RCB players and tweeted, “Say NO to hate-mongering. Cricketers are subjected to online abuse way too often. It’s high time we take a strong stand against it. Victories and Losses are a part of any sport. We stand by you @RCBTweets@danchristian54 @Gmaxi_3. We’ve been there too.”

RCB batter and Christian’s compatriot Glenn Maxwell was the first one to call out the social media trolls. Maxwell in the wee hours of Tuesday hit back on social media trolls following the incident.

  • IPL 2021: My game plan won’t change much for Eliminator, says RCB’s AB de Villiers

    By ANI

SHARJAH: Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Eliminator, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter AB de Villiers has said he won’t change his game plan and the side too will stick to what has been followed throughout the tournament.

RCB will lock horns with KKR on Monday in the Eliminator and de Villiers also revealed that skipper Virat Kohli is all pumped to take the field for the clash in the evening.

“Naturally, the intensity goes up when everything is on the line, you think back to when we started the IPL to now — we’ve put in a lot of effort, so it is natural for the juices to start flowing a bit more. Skillset stays the same, my game plan won’t change much, and I think the cricket that we are trying to play will not change much,” said de Villiers exclusively on Star Sports show Inside RCB.

“There will definitely be more to lose for everyone out there — I mean, you lose, you’re going home. You think back on all the effort you have put, you don’t want that to happen.”

“And it’s all on the line, body on the line and stuff, he (Virat Kohli) will be full of adrenaline, as always. And he will be making sure we all are in the fifth gear once the eliminator starts,” he added.

The winner of Eliminator will play against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, RCB on Monday announced that Sri Lanka cricketers Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera have been released from the team’s bio bubble.

Hasaranga and Chameera have been released to join the Sri Lanka squad for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers.

  • Virat Kohli’s RCB faces Eoin Morgan’s KKR in IPL Eliminator

    By PTI

SHARJAH: It will be a test of Virat Kohli’s tactical acumen against the ice-cool demeanour of Eoin Morgan when perennial underachievers Royal Challengers Bangalore clash with former champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL Eliminator here on Monday.

Kohli, who has decided to step down from captaincy after this edition, has led RCB to the finals in 2016 besides reaching the play-offs twice in 2015 and 2020, and he would like to end things on a high in his last hurray as captain.

For Morgan, it is about regaining the lost glory for KKR, a team that achieved great success under Gautam Gambhir, who had led them to two IPL titles in a space of three years in 2012 and 2014.

On paper, it would be a battle between two evenly-poised teams, but overall, KKR has a slight edge, having won 15 out of 28 matches they played over the years.

However, RCB will be brimming with confidence after securing a thrilling win over Delhi Capitals with a last-ball six in their final league match, finishing third in the standings with 18 points from 14 matches.

KKR, on the other hand, scripted a terrific turnaround, finishing fourth with 14 points after winning five of seven games in the UAE leg following a lacklustre performance in the first phase.

Morgan’s men had notched up a massive 86-run win over Rajasthan Royals to seal their play-offs spot and would look to carry the momentum into the Eliminator.

But past records will count for little and it will boil down to winning small moments in the match, something which Kohli and Morgan would know pretty well.

Both the captains have enough ammunition in their disposal and it will be all about managing the resources.

RCB possess a formidable batting line-up that includes AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell and Devdutt Padikkal apart from Kohli but they have failed to find a perfect combination so far.

While their top-order has given starts on most occasions, the middle-order looked unsure with the ploy to get Daniel Christian at number 3 backfiring.

Also AB de Villiers has been wasted at number 5 but Srikar Bharat’s emergence has been a big positive.

The wicketkeeper batsman scored a 52-ball 78 at number 3 and etched his name in the record books with a last-ball six for RCB in the last game.

One man who has stood out for RCB is Glenn Maxwell.

The Australian power-hitter has 498 runs and has been Kohli’s go to man this season.

The RCB skipper, however, has misfired in the last two innings and would need to find his touch quickly.

In bowling, Harshal Patel has been simply sensational with 30 wickets in 14 games, which includes a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians.

Mohammed Siraj and George Garton too have been impressive, while Yuzvendra Chahal has answered his critics with 16 wickets this season.

KKR too has been served well by the bowlers, who has churned out some terrific performances.

While pace duo of Lockie Ferguson and Shivam Mavi have peaked at the right time, sharing seven wickets in their last match, the spinners led by Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine and Shakib Al Hasan too have been impressive.

In batting, Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana hold the key and it will be interesting to see how they handle the variations of Patel and guile of Chahal at the slow Sharjah pitch.

Skipper Morgan has been woefully out of form and that remains a concern.

Teams | Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (C), Navdeep Saini, Glenn Maxwell, Dan Christian, Rajat Patidar, Dushmantha Chameera, Pavan Deshpande, Mohammed Siraj, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Sachin Baby, Wanindu Hasaranga, George Garton, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shahbaz Ahmed, Devdutt Padikkal, Kyle Jamieson, Suyash Prabhudessai, KS Bharat, Tim David, Akash Deep, AB de Villiers.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Karun Nair, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathy, Shubman Gill, Harbhajan Singh, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Pawan Negi, M Prasidh Krishna, Sandeep Warrier, Shivam Dube, Tim Southee, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russel, Ben Cutting, Shakib Al Hasan, Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer, Sheldon Jackson, Tim Seifert.

  • IPL: Eoin Morgan knows KKR got a long way to go before celebrations can start

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: Swashbuckling all-rounder Andre Russell came in at number three against RCB on Monday. When asked whether this would often be the case, KKR skipper Eoin Morgan said, “No, I think it is open to interpretation.”

“I think, given the way that we played and the position that we found ourselves in and the run-chase we had an opportunity to really affect our run-rate position, hence Russ (Russell) going up the order,” he explained.

After bowling out RCB for a paltry 92, openers Venkatesh Iyer (41 not out) and Shubhman Gill (48) helped KKR cruise to a nine-wicket win with 10 overs to spare.

Despite the big win, Morgan conceded that it was a challenge for his side to make the last four, as they are currently on the fifth spot with six points from eight games.

“There is no doubt that it is going to be a challenge, but our main aim is turn up and try and play cricket like we have done today. I think if we do that, we give ourselves the best chance of progressing,” said the England limited overs skipper.

“It is something that the franchise has done before and gone on to win the championship, so we take confidence from that but more so from our performance with the ball and the bat and in the field today.

“Moving forward, if we continue to play in that manner, it makes us a dangerous side,” Morgan signed off.

  • Eoin Morgan applauds Venkatesh Iyer, says KKR want to play ‘the Brendon McCullum’ way

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: Lavishing praise on debutant Venkatesh Iyer, skipper Eoin Morgan said the Madhya Pradesh batsman’s unbeaten knock against Royal Challengers Bangalore signified the “aggressive” brand of cricket Kolkata Knight Riders aspire to play.

After bowling out RCB for a paltry 92, openers Iyer (41 not out) and Shubhman Gill (48) helped KKR cruise to a nine-wicket win with 10 overs to spare.

“I think Venky, the way he came in and played, was outstanding. Certainly, the brand of cricket we want to play. We have a lot of talent within our group,” Morgan said at the post-match press conference.

“Playing the Brendon McCullum (way), that’s the aggressive nature in which we want to play.

“Although he was very aggressive, he managed to play with drastic control throughout the innings and his opening partnership with Shubman Gill was beautiful to watch,” he added.

  • Clinical Kolkata Knight Riders outplay Royal Challengers Bangalore, win by nine wickets

    By PTI

ABU DHABI: An authoritative Kolkata Knight Riders bossed Royal Challengers Bangalore from the beginning to the end to record a convincing nine-wicket win in their Indian Premier League match here on Monday.

Showing serious intent after their mediocre outing in the first phase of the league earlier this year, the Knight Riders bowlers fired in unison to bundle out Royal Challengers Bangalore for a paltry 92.

Then, the opening duo of Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer played some breathtaking shots and made light work of the chase of 93, completing the formality with as many as 10 overs to spare.

The supremely-talented Gill got out for a 48 off 34 deliveries while Iyer, who could have been a successful management professional after finishing his MBA in finance and giving up a placement as a tax consultant, was looking good on a 27-ball 41 not out when the winning run was hit.

The result will not just boost their morale immensely but also improve KKR’s net run rate going ahead.

Opening the bowling, architect-turned-mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy (3/13) did the star turn with three wickets in an excellent four-over spell.

Star all-rounder Andre Russell (3/9 in three overs) also bagged three wickets, including AB de Villiers’ golden duck, while there were two for Lockie Ferguson.

Devdutt Padikkal was the highest scorer with 22 runs in a forgettable outing in skipper Virat Kohli’s 200th game for RCB.

Bowling the day’s second over, right-arm medium pacer Prasidh Krishna dealt RCB a big blow when he had Virat Kohli trapped in front of wicket with his fourth delivery that jagged in and hit him above the knee-roll.

Having completed a double century of matches for RCB, Kohli went for a review but the ball-tracking technology confirmed that it was going on to hit the stumps.

This was immediately after Kohli sent a Krishna delivery in front of square on the off-side for a lovely four.

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson replaced Chakravarthy and the gifted Devdutt Padikkal smashed the pacer straight over his head to get things moving for RCB.

Krishna bowled back-to-back no balls (one front foot and one beamer) in the next over and while debutant Srikar Bharat failed to break the shackles, Padikkal capitalised on the extra delivery with a boundary.

KKR skipper Eoin Morgan made another bowling change by bringing in Sunil Narine and while the Trinidadian spinner could not get a breakthrough in his first over, Ferguson succeeded in his second when he had Padikkal caught behind when the batsman tried to play the ball fine past the keeper despite hardly getting any room to execute the ramp shot.

Russell ended Bharat’s stay in the middle as the pressure mounted on the batsman.

And then came the biggest blow for RCB when Russell bowled AB de Villiers for a first-ball duck with a top-notch yorker targeting the leg-stump.

RCB were in all sorts of trouble at 52 for four in the ninth over and it became only worse for them with the departure of Glenn Maxwell, who brought his own downfall with a needless heave against Chakravarthy’s tossed-up delivery, and Wanindu Hasaranga, the team’s another debutant, getting out cheaply.

Both the batsmen were dismissed off successive balls on a surface that was on the slower side, something that Kohli talked about after opting to bat at the toss.

Kohli is playing in a landmark 200th match for RCB, a team that he has been a part of since the beginning of the lucrative league in 2008.

“More special than the 200th game is this uniform: we promised that we would be playing for the Covid warriors, with these jerseys being auctioned for people,” Kohli said at the toss.
