By 2026-27, several popular petrol and diesel SUVs and cars in India are set to transition to hybrid technology. Maruti Suzuki is part of this shift, planning to introduce its in-house developed, affordable strong hybrid powertrain in the Fronx compact crossover and the next-generation Baleno hatchback in 2026. Mahindra’s popular XUV 3XO will also adopt hybrid technology next year. In the mid-size SUV segment, the Honda Elevate hybrid is expected in 2026, followed by the new-generation Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in 2027. The returning Renault Duster SUV will also be offered with multiple powertrains, including hybrid, petrol, and CNG options.

Mahindra has introduced the NU_IQ platform. Mahindra & Mahindra has a strategic plan for the Indian market. The vehicle manufacturer recently unveiled its new NU_IQ platform, which supports various powertrains, including hybrid. This means future Mahindra SUVs based on the NU-IQ architecture can be offered with hybrid powertrains. The Mahindra XUV 3XO will be the company’s first hybrid, launching in 2026. It is likely to feature a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine paired with a hybrid setup.

Honda’s first hybrid SUV production will begin soon at the company’s Tapukara plant in Alwar, Rajasthan. The market launch is anticipated in the second half of 2026. Honda may utilize the City e:HEV’s Atkinson cycle 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain for the Honda Elevate hybrid.

The 2025 Maruti Fronx will mark the debut of the brand’s new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain based on the 1.2-liter Z-series petrol engine. This same powertrain will also be used in the next-generation Baleno, scheduled to launch in 2026.

The third-generation Renault Duster will be available for sale with a petrol engine in early 2026. Its hybrid variant will follow 6 to 12 months later, potentially in late 2026 or early 2027. Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, popular mid-size SUVs in India, will become hybrids with their new-generation upgrades in 2027. Both SUVs are expected to feature a hybridized 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid setup.

The mid-size SUV segment is poised for significant activity in the coming years. Capitalizing on the positive response to models in this segment, automakers are planning to launch several cars to challenge the Hyundai Creta, which has been a benchmark for the past decade.

In 2026, Tata Motors, Kia, and Renault are planning to launch their mid-size SUVs. In the case of Tata, the new Sierra will arrive alongside the already existing Curvv in this segment, while Renault plans to make a comeback with the new generation Duster. On the other hand, Kia plans to launch the second-generation Seltos because the current model has been in the market for more than seven years, and in the meantime, it has also received some updates. Let us tell you about it in detail.

Tata Sierra

In early 2026, Tata will launch the Sierra with a completely new look, that too, for the first time as an electric vehicle. It will be sold with two battery options and is claimed to have a range of over 500 km on a single charge. The ICE variant will also come in the months following the launch of the electric vehicle, and it will have a new 1.5-liter turbo petrol and a 2.0-liter diesel engine.

New-Gen Kia Seltos

The second-generation Seltos, which has been seen during testing many times, will reach dealerships around the first half of 2026, with many cosmetic changes and a new cabin. Its exterior will feature new design headlamps, DRLs, and bumpers, as well as new tail lamps and alloy wheels, while there will be new features inside the cabin.

New Renault Duster

The return of the Duster nameplate will be early next year and it will be based on the new global Duster. It will be completely based on the CMF-B architecture, and a Nissan variant will also be launched. At least two petrol engines are expected initially, and a hybrid engine may also be included later.

The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is steadily gaining momentum. In response to growing demand, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are planning to introduce several new models in the coming years. While many EVs currently available in India are expensive, companies like MG and Tata have offered more affordable options such as the Comet EV, Windsor EV, Tiago EV, and Punch EV. However, the compact SUV segment still has limited choices. This will change in 2026, as at least four new affordable compact electric SUVs are slated to hit Indian roads. These include the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Kia Syros EV, Vinfast VF3, and Hyundai Inster EV.

Kia is expanding its focus on the mass-market electric vehicle segment in India, following its premium EV offerings like the EV6 and EV9. The upcoming Syros EV has been spotted undergoing testing in India. An automotive enthusiast captured the EV version of the Syros while it was en route to a charging station in Kochi.

In terms of exterior design, the Kia Syros EV largely mirrors the ICE-powered Syros. The test model was camouflaged at the front, rear, and upper window line. Elements such as the pillars, ORVMs, and roof rails appear similar to those on the internal combustion engine (ICE) version. A shark fin antenna was also visible.

The new Syros EV is anticipated to include features specific to electric vehicles, such as a closed-off grille and a charging port slot. A previous test mule spotted in South Korea featured a charging port on the left side. Beyond these changes, the vehicle appeared consistent with the conventional Kia Syros.

Minor design adjustments might be present in the front and rear detailing, while the side profile is expected to stay largely unchanged, possibly with EV-specific badging. The test vehicle seen in Korea had the same alloy wheels as the ICE Syros, with the only distinguishing features being green calipers and EV-specific badging.

Kia has not officially disclosed the specifications; however, the Syros EV is expected to utilize battery packs from the Hyundai Inster EV. The Inster EV employs either a 42-kWh or a 49-kWh battery pack, utilizing nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry. With the larger battery pack, the Inster EV offers a range of 370 km, and a 10% to 80% charge can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes. Similar specifications are anticipated for the Syros EV.

The Kia Syros EV is set to compete with the Tata Punch EV and Windsor EV, while certain variants could also contend with the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 400 EV, and the upcoming Fronx EV. The Syros EV could potentially have a starting price around Rs 14 lakh, with higher-end models possibly reaching nearly Rs 20 lakh.

The upcoming Kia Syros EV has been sighted undergoing testing in India for the first time. The model was observed at a charging station in Kochi, with its design largely concealed by camouflage. Visible design elements include its window line, roof rails, pillars, shark fin antenna, and body-colored ORVMs (outside rearview mirrors), all of which closely resemble those of its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) counterpart. Even the front and rear lighting configurations appear unchanged.

Minor design adjustments are anticipated for the EV, possibly including changes to the grille and the location of the charging port on the front. The EV could also feature EV badging on the exterior and green brake calipers, as seen in previously spotted test models. The dimensions of this compact electric SUV are expected to remain consistent.

Inside the cabin, subtle modifications might be implemented. The Kia Syros EV could incorporate new trims and upholstery, along with an instrument cluster that features EV-specific software. The feature kit is expected to mirror that of its ICE-powered version, positioning it as a highly feature-rich and spacious vehicle within its segment.

While specific details about the Syros EV’s specifications are still undisclosed, reports suggest that this electric compact SUV may share its powertrain with the Hyundai Inster EV, slated for a 2026 launch in India. Globally, the Inster EV comes with two NMC battery pack options – 42kWh and 49kWh – potentially offering ranges of 300 km and 355 km, respectively.

Upon its launch, the Kia Syros EV will compete with models like the MG ZS EV and Tata Punch EV. It’s anticipated to be one of the most affordable electric cars in India, with prices projected to start around ₹14 lakh for the base variant and potentially reach up to ₹20 lakh for the top-end trim. Currently, the Kia Carens Clavis EV is the most affordable electric SUV from Kia in India, with prices ranging from ₹17.99 lakh to ₹24.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
