Kerala’s Changanassery buzzed with inspiration as Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan addressed the closing ceremony of St Berchmans College’s historic 100-year milestone. On February 28, at the Archbishop Kavu Kutty Hall, he positioned the college as a pivotal institution in India’s journey toward self-reliance and innovation.

Marking his third Kerala trip post-office, the Vice President celebrated the state’s transformation into ‘Keralam,’ reflecting its vibrant cultural identity. Established in 1922 amid colonial challenges, the college has been a hub of intellectual awakening, fostering knowledge and character. Its alumni, including icons like Prem Nazir and former CMs V.S. Achuthanandan and Oommen Chandy, have illuminated paths globally.

‘Education forges character, and such citizens mold the nation,’ Radhakrishnan asserted. He advocated for continuous learning, open minds, and respecting others’ sentiments as the foundation for self-respect.

In a forward-looking pivot, he challenged India: ‘Stop adopting technology; start creating it for the world.’ Echoing PM Modi’s developed India blueprint, he credited youth vigor and institutions like this college for producing innovators and leaders who will drive this shift.

Delving into the motto ‘Caritas Vera Nobilitas,’ he redefined nobility as the spirit of giving beyond wealth – encompassing time, wisdom, and support. ‘Selfish living diminishes us,’ he warned, urging students to give back.

Addressing the youth directly, ‘Your generation scripts the next century. Embrace big dreams, relentless effort, and unwavering values.’ The Vice President launched two new centers – for emerging technologies and energy-environment – signaling future focus. Attendees included Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Minister Suresh Gopi, and college dignitaries.

This centenary isn’t an endpoint but a launchpad for even brighter achievements, he concluded optimistically.
