  • Religion card? Eye on Punjab polls, politicos make beeline for Kartarpur

    Express News Service

CHANDIGARH:  With Punjab Assembly elections a couple of months away, all political parties in the state are playing ‘religious card’ to woo voters. A day after Kartarpur corridor to Pakistan was reopened, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi along with 30 people, including a few of his cabinet colleagues, paid obeisance at the Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Kartarpur of Narowal district of Pakistan using the visa-free corridor. Channi urged both India and Pakistan to simplify the procedure to visit the shrine.

Channi after returning from Kartarpur termed it a historic occasion as the corridor has been reopened after the pandemic. However, he said both the national governments of India and Pakistan should make efforts for simplifying the process to help pilgrims.

Channi, who was accompanied by his family members, Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla, MLAs Harpartap Singh Ajnala and Barindermeet Singh Pahra crossed over to Pakistan at around 1 pm and came back after a few hours.

Congress state president Navjot Singh Sidhu shared a video, recalling his visits to Pakistan including the shrine.

Sidhu uploaded over an hour-long video, comprising several clippings of his visits to various places in Pakistan, including Islamabad, Lahore and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur itself.

The video clips dated back to between August and December 218.

Sindhu realsed the video on his Twitter handle @sherryontopp and named it as The Kartarpur Story.

In the complied videos, he showed several developments related to the opening of the Kartarpur corridor.

In his tweet, Sidhu said, “Guru Nanak’s teachings are the centrifugal force of Sikhism, he is the light house that guides us on the path of Universal Brotherhood, Peace & wellbeing of all. Sarbat da Bhala is our guiding force.”

Sidhu, meanwhile, will be visiting Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala on Friday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

The first Sikh Guru lived in Sultanpur Lodhi for some years before setting out on his travels to deliver his message among the masses.

Notably, Sidhu was not part of the Channi-led ‘jatha’ (group) which went to offer prayers at the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan after traveling through the visa-free Kartarpur corridor that reopened for pilgrims after a gap of 20 months.

Sidhu’s media advisor Surinder Dalla on Wednesday night had said the Congress leader had been officially intimated that he could go on November 20 instead of November 18.

Sidhu had made preparations for visiting the Kartarpur Sahib on Thursday but was disappointed after learning of not being the part of the ‘jatha’ going on Thursday, Dalla had said.

Replying to a query on Sidhu, Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla on Thursday said the government of India has given permission for traveling to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan to Cabinet ministers and MLAs in a phased manner.

“Some got permission (to visit Kartarpur Sahib) for today, some for tomorrow and others for the day after tomorrow,” said Singla.

Earlier in the day, a 21 member delegation of Punjab BJP leaders lead by Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma visited the gurdwara via the corridor.

Sharma said he was thankful to the Prime Minister and the home minister for reopening the corridor to allow devotees to offer prayers ahead of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

Among those who were part of the BJP ‘jatha’ included Harjeet Singh Grewal, Jeevan Gupta, Tikshan Sud and Subhash Sharma.

On Friday a delegation of Punjab AAP leaders is expected to pay their obeisance at the shrine. Senior AAP leader and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema said all party MLAs have applied for permission from the Union government to visit the shrine.

Channi biggest coloniser in Punjab, says Badal

Launching a frontal attack on Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday termed Channi as “patchwork chief minister” and alleged Channi was the “biggest illegal colonizer” in the state.

Badal also alleged Channi was responsible for the mushrooming of illegal colonies in the Kharar-Ropar belt in the state.

  • AAP claims its delegation ‘denied’ permission to visit Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The AAP on Thursday claimed that its delegation was ‘denied’ permission to visit the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan, blaming the Centre and the Punjab government for the same.

The party had on Wednesday said the Punjab MLAs under the leadership of state unit chief Bhagwant Mann would pay obeisance at Kartarpur Sahib on November 19 on the occasion of Guru Nanak Dev’s ‘Parkash Utsav’.

AAP leader Raghav Chadha, in a tweet, shared a purported communication by the Centre to the Punjab government regarding the political clearance for the visit of ministers and MLAs to the shrine over three days.

“AAP delegation has been denied permission to visit Sri Kartarpur Sahib by Modi-Channi duo. It is clear that as per a tactical understanding between PM Modi and CM Channi, only Channi and his men are permitted to visit. The match-fixing between Modi & Channi has surfaced yet again,” he said.

Chadha, the co-incharge of the party’s political affairs in Punjab, also shared a list of the Punjab government delegation approved by the Centre, on the microblogging site.

Reacting on the matter, AAP convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said it is wrong to prevent one from bowing down in “Guru Maharaj ji’s darbar on the day of Guru Parv”.

“Such politics is not good for the country and society. Even an enemy should not be stopped from bowing down and offering prayers in the court of Guru Maharaj ji,” he tweeted.

Later in a video message, Chadha said the AAP had submitted an application to both the Centre and the Punjab government, requesting for giving political clearance and permission to the party delegation to visit Kartarpur Sahib.

“But, both the Modi government and Channi-led dispensation in Punjab denied giving permission to the AAP delegation to bow down in the court of Kartarpur Sahib,” he added.

On the other hand, he claimed, the Punjab Congress delegation “did not face any problem” in getting the permission.

Channi and some of his Cabinet ministers on Thursday offered prayers at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, travelling there through the visa-free Kartarpur corridor that reopened after a gap of 20 months.

The Kartarpur Corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district.

Sharma, who was sporting a turban, said that they were thankful to the prime minister and the home minister for reopening the Kartarpur corridor to allow devotees to offer prayers ahead of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

Among party leaders who were part of the BJP ‘jatha’ (delegation) included Jeevan Gupta, Subhash Sharma and KD Bhandari. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and ministers will also visit the shrine on Thursday.

Twenty-eight devotees on Wednesday had visited the gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan through the Kartarpur corridor. Security men were deployed in strength in and around Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur on Thursday.

The Centre reopened the Kartarpur corridor from Wednesday ahead of Gurpurab, which marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, on November 19. Pilgrimage to the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.

  • Pakistan’s top Sikh body welcomes India’s decision to reopen Kartarpur Corridor

    By PTI

LAHORE: Pakistan’s top Sikh body and the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) on Tuesday welcomed the Indian government’s decision to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor, saying it will help Indian Sikhs to visit the last abode of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev without any hindrance.

India on Tuesday announced the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor from Wednesday.

The corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district.

The announcement to restart the pilgrimage that was suspended since March 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak came three days before the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev on Friday.

“We welcome the Indian government’s decision, which should have been taken a long ago. The decision will provide Sikhs from Indian Punjab an opportunity to visit the Gurdwara Kartarpur where Baba Nanak had spent the last 18 years of his life,” Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) Pardhan (president) Sardar Ameer Singh told PTI.

“It is the basic right of the Sikhs to come to their holy places in Pakistan,” he said.

Singh further said the corridor should not be dragged into politics.

“A message of love and harmony should go from here. This will help reduce tension and improve ties between the two countries in days to come,” he said.

The bilateral relations between India and Pakistan have been affected badly over the Kashmir issue.

Singh said the PSGPC would host some 3,000 Sikhs due here on Wednesday in connection with the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

“We can facilitate as many pilgrims at the corridor crossing over here from India,” he said, adding that the corridor will bring the people of both countries closer one day.

The ETPB, which looks after the holy places of minorities in Pakistan, also welcomed the decision of reopening the corridor.

“We had been anticipating this decision long ago, but nonetheless it’s never too late and we welcome it,” ETPB spokesperson Amir Hashmi told PTI.

He said some 3,000 Sikhs will arrive in Pakistan from India via Wagah Border on Wednesday and many others from other parts of the world.

The main event will be held on November 18 at Gurdwara Janamasthan Nankana Sahib and all visiting yatrees would be taken to the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib as well.

In November 2019, Pakistan Prime Minister Minister Imran Khan had formally inaugurated the Kartarpur Corridor as part of commemoration of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak at a colourful ceremony, paving the way for Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit one of their religion’s holiest sites in Pakistan without needing a visa.

The 4 km-long Kartarpur Corridor provides visa free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.

Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev lived and died at this gurdwara at the start of the 16th century.

NEW DELHI: The Kartarpur Sahib corridor to the most revered shrines of Sikhs located in Pakistan will be reopened from Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday.

The corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district.

The announcement to restart the pilgrimage that was suspended since March 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak came three days before the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev on Friday.

Shah said the decision reflects the Modi government’s immense reverence for Guru Nanak Dev and the Sikh community.

“In a major decision, that will benefit large numbers of Sikh pilgrims, PM @Narendramodi govt has decided to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from tomorrow, Nov 17.

“This decision reflects the immense reverence of Modi govt towards Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and our Sikh community,” Shah tweeted.

The home minister said the nation is all set to celebrate the Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji on November 19 and he was confident that this move will further “boost the joy and happiness across the country”.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi welcomed the Centre’s decision and said the state cabinet will be part of the “Jatha” that will visit the shrine in Pakistan on November 18.

Besides Channi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former CM Amarinder Singh, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also hailed the Centre’s move.

India signed the Kartarpur corridor agreement with Pakistan on October 24, 2019.

Under the pact, Indian pilgrims of all faiths are allowed to undertake round the year visa-free travel through the 4.5-km-long passage.

In November 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the dedicated corridor.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur, the then Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Union minister Hardeep Puri were part of the first group that visited the gurudwara in Pakistan in November 2019 through the corridor.

  • Kartarpur corridor to reopen from Wednesday, Punjab Cabinet to pay obeisance on Thursday

    Express News Service

CHANDIGARH: India has decided to reopen the visa-free Kartarpur Corridor that links Dera Baba Nanak in the Gurdaspur district of India to Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Narowal of Pakistan, from Wednesday (November 17).

The entire Punjab Cabinet will pay obeisance at Kartarpur Sahib on November 18 as a part of the first delegation after reopening the corridor.

The decision also comes ahead of the upcoming birth anniversary (Gurpurab) of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, on November 19, for which the Centre has already allowed Sikh pilgrims to travel to the Kartarpur gurdwara via the Attari-Wagah border.

Punjab BJP leaders had met PM Modi on Sunday and President of Ram Nath Kovind on Monday demanding opening of the corridor.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “In a major decision, that will benefit large numbers of Sikh pilgrims, PM @Narendramodi govt has decided to re-open the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from tomorrow, Nov 17. This decision reflects the immense reverence of Modi govt towards Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and our Sikh community.”

“The nation is all set to celebrate the Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji on 19th of November and I am sure that PM @NarendraModi govt’s decision to reopen the Kartarpur Sahib corridor will further boost the joy and happiness across the country,” he wrote in another tweet.

A senior official at the Kartarpur corridor said, “From tomorrow, the registration will start on the portal for pilgrims who want to visit the Darbar Sahib Gudwara in Kartarpur as it takes four days for the process to complete. The backlog will be cleared first as the application already pending will be cleared. One has to carry the certificate that he/she is fully vaccinated.”

The corridor was inaugurated by PM Modi on November 19, 2019, and closed on March 23, 2020, due to the Covid outbreak. However, pilgrims numbering between 5,000 and 17,000 visited the gurdwara daily through the corridor. When the corridor was re-opened on November 19, 2020,  62,690 devotees went through the corridor before it was closed again on April 18, 2021.

Meanwhile, Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi thanked the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister for re-opening the Kartarpur corridor. He said that this is a joyous occasion for the entire Punjabi community in general and Sikh brethren in particular.

“There could not have been a better occasion than now for the opening of the corridor as thousands of devotees will get the chance to pay their obeisance at the holy shrine on the Guruparab day itself,” former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said while thanking PM Modi for the decision.

Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu had demanded the opening of the corridor. The president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Bibi Jagir Kaur also wrote to PM Modi in this regard.

Thanking the Union government, Sidhu tweeted, “Welcome step …. The reopening of the Corridor of infinite possibilities … invaluable gift for Nanak naam levas … may the corridor of the Great Guru remain open eternally to shower blessings on one an all …. Sarbat da bhala.”

Last week, Pakistan had urged India to reopen the corridor.

The Kartarpur Corridor was inaugurated by Prime Minister Imran Khan on the eve of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev on November 9, 2019, according to the Foreign Office.

But the coronavirus pandemic hit the region along with the world just months after the opening of the corridor.

The movement of pilgrims to Pakistan through the corridor has been suspended since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the neighbouring country banned all travel from India citing the surge in cases in April this year.

India “is yet to open the corridor from its side and allow pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib,” said the FO.

“Pakistan expects that India in the spirit of cooperation would allow pilgrims to travel through the corridor to visit Kartarpur Sahib,” it added.

His Caption is only Rahul Gandhi   .Navjot Kaur Siddhu also said that her husband is a leader of the new generation of Congress, who believe only and only Rahul Gandhi’s words.

Union Minister Smriti Irani has demanded an explanation from Rahul Gandhi that needs to answer about Navjot Singh Sidhu’s conduct. during his visit to Pakistan for the Kartarpur Corridor program and his statement insults the Chief Minister of his state.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also said that the ongoing dispute is between the “three captains” in the Congress. Congress President Rahul Gandhi, along with Pakistan, is making a dangerous conspiracy against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. Rahul Gandhi’s nephew Navjot Singh Sidhu has disclosed this. Sidhu has said that he went to Pakistan only on the advice of Rahul Gandhi and met Pakistan PM Imran Khan there. Pakistan’s Imran Khan and Rahul Gandhi are one to pronounce  elanen Jung : Congress-Pakistan will joined hands remove Modi Government. Clearly, Pakistan has been disturbed by the siege of Prime Minister Modi and here in India the Congress party also wants to remove the Modi government at any cost.

That is why Congress and Pakistan have joined hands. It is notable that it was noteworthy that on the instructions of the Congress high command earlier, Mani Shankar Aiyar also went to Pakistan and sought assistance from the ISI to remove the Modi government?

It is also appropriate to remember one more incident in this context. During the Gujarat assembly elections, a secret meeting at Manishankar Aiyar’s house was organized to cover up a conspiracy. Manmohan Singh and Hamid Ansari on the directions of the Congress high command and some other blind devotees of Ten Janapatra, where present at that meeting to shake hand Foreign Minister Kasuri and Pakistani ambassador.

Khalistani terrorist Gopal Chawla has taken his photographs with Sidhu and got viral in social media. But when criticized Sidhu said, I do not know Chawla. Similarly, in Hyderabad December 2, he had said that Congress President Rahul Gandhi had sent him to Pakistan.

Not only that, Siddhu had also disclosed that after his returning from Pakistan, Congress leaders such as Shashi Tharoor, Surajwala and Harish Rawat raised their enthusiasm by patting his back. But today, the same  Navjot Sidhu who is saying that he did not go Pakistan by the instruction of Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Navjot Sidhu is now fame of social media: After the defectors, anti-country protesters now become Paltu Siddhu-Budhu. The media should now stop glorifying politicians as well. If a leader gives a statement before the media, then he should be brought to light. But later, if he speaks the white lie and rejects it then it would be good if the media did not discuss this to highlight the white lire.

Rahul Gandhi is likely to be trapped in the Pakistani Honey Trap. This is the possibility we have expressed that before his party’s top leader Shashi Tharoor and presently Punjab’s Chief Minister Amarinder Singh have also been trapped in the Honey Trap.
