  • CWC meeting will be convened very soon: Surjewala a day after Azad, Sibal demanded it

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will meet “very soon”, the party said on Thursday, a day after some senior leaders demanded such a meeting in the face of multiple desertions and turmoil in the organisation.

Chief spokesperson of the Congress Randeep Surjewala said the party president had indicated last week that a meeting of the CWC, the top decision-making body of the party, would be called very soon.

“Before leaving for Shimla, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had already indicated that a CWC meeting shall be called very soon. Accordingly, the CWC meeting shall be held in the coming days,” Surjewala told PTI.

On Wednesday, senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal, who are part of a group of 23 leaders (G-23) seeking organisational revamp, demanded that a meeting of the CWC be convened immediately to discuss internal party issues such as a spate of defections from the party and turmoil in many state units including Punjab.

Sibal had also raised questions on the decision-making process in the party in the absence of a regular president, and demanded dialogue where all senior leaders would be heard.

“In our party at the moment there is no president. So we don’t know who is taking these decisions. We know and yet we don’t know. I believe one of my senior colleagues has written to the Congress president to immediately convene a CWC. So that at least some things that we can’t speak publicly, we can have a dialogue in the CWC as to why we are in this state,” he said.

Azad has written to the Congress president demanding that a meeting of the CWC be immediately convened.

Azad said that the party should welcome suggestions and not suppress them.

While Azad and some other G-23 leaders are part of the CWC, Sibal is not.

Hitting back at Sibal, Surjewala had said, “Every Congressman and woman must also seriously introspect whether by their words and actions they are attempting to weaken the Congress in the times of crisis.

” Sibal had said, “We are not ‘Jee Huzur 23’.

We will continue to put forth our views and will continue to repeat our demands.

” In an apparent attack on the party leadership, he said there is no monopoly in the power structure of any country or political party.

Several Congress leaders of the ‘Group of 23’, which had last year written to party chief Sonia Gandhi demanding an organisational overhaul, on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on their colleague Kapil Sibal’s house and termed it as “orchestrated hooliganism”.

Congress workers protested outside Sibal’s house and reportedly damaged a car, after he raised questions over the party’s functioning and attacked its leadership.

Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Vivek Tankha and Raj Babbar were among those who rallied behind Sibal, with Sharma asking Gandhi to take strong action against those involved.

Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh also criticised what he said was an “attack” at the house of Sibal by Congress workers only because he “chose to express views that were not palatable to the party leadership”.

This does not augur well for the party, Singh said, adding that it was unfortunate that the seniors are being “completely sidelined”, which is not good for the party.

Terming the senior Congressmen as “thinkers”, who were important to the future of the party, the former chief minister in a statement said the younger leadership should be promoted to implement the plans, which the senior leaders are best equipped to formulate.

Azad, former leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, also strongly condemned the “orchestrated hooliganism” at Sibal’s residence.

“He (Sibal) is a loyal Congressman fighting for the party both inside and outside Parliament. Any suggestion from any quarter should be welcomed instead of suppressing, hooliganism is unacceptable,” tweeted Azad, who along with Sibal is part of the ‘Group of 23’ which last year had written to Gandhi seeking organisational overhaul of the party.

Chidambaram tweeted that he feels helpless when “we cannot start meaningful conversations within party forums”.

“I also feel hurt and helpless when I see pictures of Congress workers raising slogans outside the residence of a colleague and MP. The safe harbour to which one can withdraw seems to be silence,” he said.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, “Orchestrated hooliganism outside Kapil Sibal’s residence last night is not the culture of the Congress.”

“If one has any difference of views, the same should be brought up and discussed at party forum,” he said on Twitter.

Asserting that difference in opinion and perception are integral to a democracy, Sharma, also a part of the G-23, said intolerance and violence is alien to Congress values and culture.

“Shocked and disgusted to hear the news of attack and hooliganism at Kapil Sibal’s house. This deplorable action brings disrepute to the party and needs to be strongly condemned,” Sharma said in a series of tweets.

He asserted that the Congress has a history of upholding freedom of expression.

Those responsible must be identified and disciplined, Sharma said.

“Urging Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take cognisance and strong action,” he said in a tweet.

Taking to Twitter, Congress MP from Punjab, Manish Tewari, unequivocally condemned what he said was “orchestrated hooliganism” at Sibal’s residence last night.

“Those who masterminded the assault must bear in mind that he fights for @INCIndia both inside and outside courts of law. You may find his views uncomfortable but that cannot be a license for violence,” Tewari, who is a part of the 23 leaders who wrote to Gandhi last year, said.

In another tweet, he said, “Those who are trying to defend the ‘command performance’ last night. This is what happened @KapilSibal’s house ‘They damaged the car. Stood on top, so it caved in. Threw tomatoes both outside and inside the house’. If this is not hooliganism then what else is it”.

Responding to Tewari’s tweet, Shashi Tharoor, who was part of the leaders who wrote to Gandhi, tweeted, “That is shameful. We all know @KapilSibal as a true Congressman who has fought multiple cases in court for @INCIndia.”

“As a democratic party we need to listen to what he has to say, disagree if you must but not in this way. Our priority is to strengthen ourselves to take on the BJP!” he said.

Also responding to Tewari’s tweet, Congress leader Vivek Tankha tweeted, “Never to a person who has fought and saved so many Congress governments and persons and unmake opposition government.”

“People may disagree with him. Even protest. But not damage his car. At least in my life I never encouraged or promoted hooliganism,” Tankha said.

Another Congress leader Raj Babbar said, “Don’t unleash mob-power on ideological co-travellers — you will look more pitiful in front of ideological rivals.”

“Is criticising what happened outside Kapil Sibal’s residence not a part of Congress culture,” he asked in a tweet in Hindi.

Soon after he raised questions over the functioning of the Congress, Sibal on Wednesday came under attack from several quarters with party workers also protesting outside his house here.

In the wake of several Congress leaders quitting the party and its Punjab unit in turmoil, Sibal has demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

Sibal said at a press conference that the G-23 grouping is “not a Jee Huzur 23” and will continue to put forth the views and will continue to repeat the demands.

Carrying ‘Get Well Soon Kapil Sibal’ placards and raising slogans against Sibal, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) workers had protested outside his Jor Bagh residence, saying they were “hurt” by his remarks.

The protesters raised slogans against Sibal, asking him to “leave the party”.

A protestor also stood on his car.

  • Don’t make Congress’ internal matters public, hurts workers: Pawan Khera to party colleagues

    By PTI

AHMEDABAD: A day after senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal raised questions over the functioning of the party and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the party leaders must not go public with the internal matters as it hurts the ground level workers.

Asserting that the Congress gives enough freedom to its leaders to express their views, he said internal matters should not be discussed publicly for the sake of “discipline” and that they should be raised on a proper platform only.

“Crores of Congress workers are in pain due to such acts. Senior party leaders should discuss such matters on a proper platform, not in public. There is a difference between BJP and Congress. While there is no ban on free speech in our party, our leaders need to put their opinion on a proper platform,” said Khera during his interaction with mediapersons here.

“Suppose you have a family dispute, would you prefer to solve it internally or go to your neighbour’s terrace and speak about it? There should be discipline, which is necessary to run a family, an organisation and a country,” he added.

While addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Kapil Sibal, who is part of the “Group of 23” that had written to Sonia Gandhi last year demanding an organisational overhaul, had raised questions on the party’s high command in the wake of the events unfolding in Punjab, saying that the party workers did not know who was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

When asked about Amarinder Singh’s meeting with Amit Shah days after the former’s resignation as the Punjab CM, Khera expressed unhappiness claiming that Singh’s act had hurt the party workers.

“Internal issues should be discussed internally. What was the need to meet when you can talk over the phone. Congress workers, who are fighting against the BJP government and its billionaire friends, are pained to see our own people doing this. I am just sharing the anguish of all those ground level workers with you,” Khera said.

  • Congress leader Anand Sharma slams ‘hooliganism’ outside former minister Kapil Sibal’s house

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Thursday expressed disgust over party workers’ protest outside Kapil Sibal’s house after he raised questions over the functioning of the Congress and asked AICC chief Sonia Gandhi to take strong action against those involved.

Asserting that differences of opinion and perception are integral to a democracy, Sharma, who along with Sibal is part of the ‘Group of 23’ which last year had written to Gandhi seeking organisational overhaul of the party, said intolerance and violence is alien to the Congress values and culture.

  • Endgame for Congress? With ‘Get Well Soon’ placards, party workers protest outside Kapil Sibal’s house

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Hours after he raised questions over the functioning of the Congress, senior party leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday came under attacks from several quarters with party workers also protesting outside his house here.

In the wake of several Congress leaders quitting the party and its Punjab unit in turmoil, Sibal demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

Sibal, a member of the ‘Group of 23’ which last year had written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, said at a press conference that the grouping is “not a Jee Huzur 23” and will continue to put forth the views and will continue to repeat the demands.

Carrying ‘Get Well Soon Kapil Sibal’ placards and raising slogans against Sibal, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) workers protested outside his Jor Bagh residence, saying they were “hurt” by his remarks.

“The workers went there on their own accord as they felt hurt by Sibal’s remarks. They just expressed their disappointment over the remarks,” a senior DPCC functionary said on condition of anonymity.

The protesters raised slogans against Sibal asking him to “leave the party”.

Several leaders hit out at Sibal for what they said was questioning the leadership from which he had earlier “benefitted”.

Youth Congress chief Srinivas B V said on Twitter, “Listen ‘Ji-Huzoor’ :- The ‘President’ and ‘Leadership’ of the party are the same, who always ensured your entry in Parliament, made you a ‘minister’ during the good times of the party, when in opposition, ensured your entry into Rajya Sabha, always rewarded with responsibilities in good and bad times. And when the ‘time’ came for struggle, then.”

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken and Chhattisgarh minister T S Singhdeo hit out at Sibal for his remarks.

Delhi Congress leader Alka Lamba also slammed Sibal, alleging that she kept requesting him in the 2020 assembly elections to come to Chandni Chowk and campaign but he did not come.

“The workers whom Sibal called for a meeting at his home ahead of the polls, they joined Aam Aadmi Party the next day. Will the Congress run on these people’s strength?” Lamba said on Twitter.

The ripples of the turmoil in the Congress’ Punjab unit reached Delhi as Sibal lashed out at the party leadership and demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened.

Maken alleged that leaders like Sibal are demoralising the party cadres who have stood by the Congress ideology.

He said it was Sonia Gandhi, the current Congress president, who made him a union minister though he did not have any organisational background and experience.

“My appeal to Mr Sibal and others like him is that they should not denigrate the organisation which has given them political identity by rushing to the media every then and now,” Maken told PTI.

“Such remarks by leaders like Sibal, who have got everything from the organisation and the leadership, demoralise the party cadres and ordinary workers who continue to stand with the Congress ideology and are fighting the fundamental and fascist forces on the streets,” he said.

Earlier, addressing the media, Sibal, who is a part of the ‘Group of 23’ that had written to Sonia Gandhi last year demanding an organisational overhaul, wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

He said the grouping is “not a Jee Huzur 23” and will continue to put forth the views and will continue to repeat the demands.

Maken rejected Sibal’s contention about Congress having no regular president, saying Sonia Gandhi continues to lead the party.

“The meeting of the CWC and that of party general secretaries have been held at least half a dozen times in the last few months, taking important decision of the party, where everyone has been given full opportunity to air their views,” the former union minister said.

  • ‘Group of 23’ not ‘Jee Huzur 23’: Kapil Sibal seeks immediate meeting of Congress Working Committee

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: With several Congress leaders quitting the party and its Punjab unit in turmoil, senior party leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

Addressing the media, he said that a senior member of the ‘Group of 23’ has written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi for convening the CWC meeting immediately to discuss the party affairs and the exodus. Sibal said the grouping is “not a Jee Huzur 23” and will continue to put forth the views and will continue to repeat the demands.

He said the Congress needs to be strengthened as a strong opposition to take on the government and once again reiterated the demands of the group for holding elections to the Congress president, the CWC and the central election committee.

He expressed anguish over the developments in the party in Punjab and the recent exodus of party leaders, saying all such issues need to be discussed at a party platform.

  • Courts must take suo motu cognisance of Assam ‘brutality’: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Courts must take suo motu cognisance of the ‘brutality’ in Assam, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said on Saturday in the backdrop of clashes between police and alleged encroachers resulting in the death of two persons and injuries to 20.

The incident took place during an eviction drive in Gorukhuti village in Assam’s Darrang district on Thursday, Sibal also said that the silence of the government is disheartening.

“Assam – Barbaric images of brutality seen on social media against those resisting eviction have shaken me. The silence of our government has disheartened me,” he said on Twitter.

“An enquiry is no answer. The court needs to act suo motu,” Sibal demanded.

  • Centre can use Afghanistan’s situation to take advantage in UP elections, alleges Kapil Sibal

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Friday alleged that the Centre will try to manipulate the Taliban regime in Afghanistan for its own advantage ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.

However, the Congress leader claimed that India has no role in an “inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue”

“Afghanistan We are hardly a player in an “inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue”. Our policy towards the Taliban regime will be guided by how this regime can use it to its advantage in the UP Assembly election. That is the bitter truth! The media is already playing its part!” tweeted Sibal.

India’s Permanent Representative to United Nations TS Tirumurti on Thursday said that Afghan territory should not be used to threaten or attack any country or to shelter or train terrorists, or to plan or to finance terrorist acts by the Taliban.

He also said that Security Council Resolution 2593 has taken note of the Taliban statement that Afghans will be able to travel abroad in an unhindered manner, a statement from United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) informed.

India’s emphasis has been on the welfare and well-being of the people of Afghanistan. India has undertaken more than 500 development projects in each of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, Tirumurti informed during his address to the United Nations Security Council.

Meanwhile, the Taliban is facing cascading challenges as the outfit announced a caretaker government in Afghanistan weeks after the takeover of the war-torn country.

Only a few days after the Taliban named an acting cabinet to lead the nation, tensions flared with neighbouring Pakistan while Afghanistan’s longstanding humanitarian crisis has also deepened, The New York Times informed.

The Taliban is facing intense outrage from the people. Journalists, women and activists including university students, all are holding demonstrations against the outfit while the ‘new government’ is imposing restrictions to curb the voices rising against it.

  • Congress moves on with ‘eyes wide shut’: Kapil Sibal after Sushmita Dev quits party

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: As the women’s wing chief of the Congress resigned, senior leader Kapil Sibal on Monday said the party is moving on with its “eyes wide shut”.

“Sushmita Dev resigns from primary membership of our Party. While young leaders leave we ‘oldies’ are blamed for our efforts to strengthen it,” the former union minister said on Twitter.

“The Party moves on with: Eyes Wide Shut,” he also said.

Sibal, a member of the ‘Group of 23’ leaders who had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking organisational overhaul, has been demanding that the party be strengthened.

The senior party leader on Sunday welcomed the party chief’s initiative of bringing like-minded political parties together, but urged her to strengthen her own party, saying no Opposition unity is possible without it.

Sibal, however, said he along with other leaders of the “Group of 23” would continue to demand reforms in the grand old party and keep pushing for its strengthening.

“I am happy that Congress president Sonia Gandhi is taking the initiative of bringing about Opposition unity.

But our reform agenda has to continue and we will keep pushing for it to strengthen the Congress,” he told PTI.

The former Union minister said he and his party colleagues are ready to support these efforts in order to revive and revitalise the Congress.

He said Gandhi can “jettison” him if he stands in her way, but he would continue to seek strengthening of the Congress for bringing it to the forefront of Opposition unity.

“This is not about me, but about a revival of the Congress and bringing it to the forefront of Opposition unity.

Without the Congress being strong, there can be no Opposition unity,” Sibal said.

Sibal said Opposition unity will not come about till the Congress is revived and strengthened.

“This project of Opposition unity will fail if the Congress is not strengthened and rejuvenated. I hope the Congress realises the significance of its primacy,” he said.

  • At Kapil Sibal’s dinner, Opposition demands strong leadership in Congress to counter BJP

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha MP and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal’s birthday dinner on Monday became a rallying point for the Opposition’s call for unity and change in the working of the Congress party to counter the ruling dispensation.

On one hand, where the Gandhi family remained absent from the gathering, it witnessed an attendance of G-23 members including veteran Congress leader Gulam Nabi Azad, party MP Shashi Tharoor, Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Anand Sharma, Manish Tewari and P Chidambaram.

As per sources present at the party, the occasion turned into another show of G-23 leaders, where for the first time opposition party leaders got together at a dinner table, and demanded changes in Congress leadership.

The dinner was also attended by many important non-UPA leaders like RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, Omar Abdullah from National Conference, Pinaki Mishra of Biju Janta Dal, Naresh Gujral of Shiromani Akali Dal, Sanjay Raut of Shivsena, Sanjay Singh of Aam Admi Party, along with many leaders of TDP, DMK, YSR Congress and TRS.

As per sources, the political agenda was clearly discussed at the dinner table with a call for improvement on Congress leadership to put up a strong front against the ruling BJP-led government.

“While Omar Abdullah questioned what steps were being taken to strengthen the Congress and stated that whenever the Congress is strong, the opposition becomes stronger, Sharad Pawar extended support to the G-23 leaders and said that we are with you in terms of whatever you are doing inside and outside your party,” sources said.

The sources further informed that a section of leaders from Opposition parties also raised the issue of “no leadership in the Congress party” if they are willing to extend their support at the national front.

“TMC leader Derek O’ Brien said that on one hand, Congress fights against TMC in West Bengal, on the other hand, the party wants TMC to be on board with them in Centre. A BJP leader also raised the issue of unclear leadership in the party and said, “there are issues in which we feel that we can align with Congress but whom should we talk to?” sources said.

“YSR representative also said they are ready to forget the things in the past for the betterment of the country. Even Shiromani Akali Dal MP Naresh Gujral said his party can be united on the farmer’s issue,” they added.

They added that Akhilesh Yadav and Lalu Yadav also stressed the need for strong and united opposition against BJP while both leaders added that Congress should use the experience of senior leaders like Kapil Sibal.

The timing of the meeting is also interesting when the monsoon session of Parliament has few days left and opposition has tried to show unity when it comes to taking on Central Government on the issues like Pegasus, Farmers Agitation, and Inflation.

But it’s more alarming for the Congress Party which is trying to showcase and built-up the leadership of Rahul Gandhi as the Wayanad MP is leading the Opposition.

Rahul Gandhi hosted a breakfast for Opposition Party leaders at the Constitution Club in Delhi, a few days back and Congress Party had claimed in a press conference that it’s a picture of 2024.

However, the gathering at Sibal’s residence has been organized on a day when Rahul Gandhi is in Srinagar.
