Dashanan Temple priest, Ram Bajpai, told ANI that the temple opens only on the occasion of Dussehra and devotees come to pray that their children acquire wisdom and power similar to that of Raavan.

“We open this temple on the day of Dussehra and worship Raavan and the temple is closed in the evening after burning of a Raavan effigy. The temple opens only on the day of Dussehra. We worship him for his knowledge. There was no one else who possessed the power, knowledge, and wisdom similar to that of Raavan. His only drawback was his arrogance,” said the temple priest.

  • UP: Teacher hurts Class V student with drilling machine for failing to recite multiplication table

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: In an incident of corporal punishment, an instructor used a power hand drilling machine to wound the hand of a Class V student after allegedly he failed to answer the multiplication table of two at Basic Primary Model School in Prem Nagar area of Kanpur on Thursday.

The incident came to light on Friday when the student’s parents protested in front of the school demanding action against the instructor.

Amid the protest, Basic Education Officer (BSA) accosted the parents and tried to appease them. Subsequently, he announced the termination of the instructor Anuj Pandey from service. Further, the BSA constituted a three-member committee to probe into the incident.

“A three-member committee has been formed to look into various aspects such as whether the child was hurt deliberately or accidentally and also the role of other teachers in hushing up the incident,” the BSA added.

Local sources said that the nine-year-old boy was passing through the school library when the instructor, hired from a private institution, was overseeing the repairing work with a power-driven hand-drilling machine in his hand.

On seeing the boy, the instructor stopped him and asked him to recite the table of two which the student failed to explain correctly.

Following this, the instructor, Anuj, ran the drilling machine through the hand of the student.

“Anuj Sir asked me to tell the table of two. As I failed to recite the table correctly, he got infuriated and ran the drilling machine on my left hand. One of the students Krishna standing beside me pulled the plug out to stop the machine but by then my hand had got injured,” the boy said narrating the incident.

The school authorities tried to play the incident down and sent the injured student with little first aid.

“The school administration neither informed the higher authorities about the incident nor did they take any action against the instructor Anuj. Moreover, the injured child was not given an anti-Tetanus injection immediately after the incident,” said one of the boy’s relatives.

However, the school authorities informed the district education officer about the incident following protests by the child’s parents on Friday.

The police have identified the arrested accused as the President of Jamiatul Quresh, Nizam Qureshi from Kanpur.

According to the police, Qureshi was often seen with other accused persons Hayat Jaffar Hashmi and Hafiz Faisal Zafri. Qureshi was appealed to stop meeting with Hayat during a meeting at Akbar Azam Hall on June 1, said the police.

Recently on June 8, a special investigation team visited the violent site and collected evidence.

All accused, including key conspirator Hayat Zafar Hashmi, were sent to 14-day judicial remand on Sunday in connection with the incident. They were taken to District Jail in Kanpur by the police after they were sent on a 14-day remand.

Earlier on Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh Police had said the main accused in the Kanpur violence case, Hayat Jaffar Hashmi was arrested along with three other masterminds.

  • Authorities raze property of close aide of main accused in Kanpur violence

    By PTI

KANPUR: A week after the city witnessed chaotic protests marred by stone pelting, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) on Saturday demolished a multi-storey building allegedly owned by a close aide of the main accused in the incident, police said.

Police also arrested one Nizam Qureshi, who officials claim is another mastermind of the June 3 violence.

Qureshi was among the 36 accused whose names were mentioned in the FIR lodged soon after the violence, a police official said. Kanpur’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Anand Prakash Tiwari confirmed the arrest.

“Nizam Qureshi has been arrested from Kanpur in connection with the June 3 incident,” the officer said, adding that the accused had gone underground since the violence took place.

According to police sources, Qureshi shared incendiary messages on social media platforms and provoked people to indulge in stone pelting. The investigators are trying to recover information related to the violence from Qureshi’s phone.

“Qureshi was one of the key conspirators of the Kanpur violence. Messages from his mobile phones were sent to over half-a-dozen other mobile phones that are now being tracked,” said a senior official, requesting anonymity.

Some crucial information pertaining to the violence was also found from a social media group of which the prime accused in the violence, Zafar Hayat Hashmi, was a member, the officer said.

Qureshi is the head of Jamiatul Qureshi, an unofficial body of the Qureshi community in Kanpur. He is a former Samajwadi Party (SP) district secretary.

District SP chief Imran told PTI that Qureshi was expelled from the party on May 22 for anti-party activities and not taking interest in the party’s programmes.

Tiwari said the KDA has demolished a four-storey residential building owned by Mohammad Ishtiyaq, who is said to be a close aide of Hashmi.

There are reasons to believe that investments in the construction of the building were made by Hashmi, the officer said, adding that the demolition was carried out in accordance with the relevant norms and regulations.

Ishtiyaq passed away a couple of years ago, he said.  The building was located at Swaroopnagar and was built around three years ago, police said.

Authorities brought down some parts of the ground floor and the first floor of the building amid heavy police deployment. The building was vacant at the time of the demolition, police said.

According to police, Ishtiyaq, who ran a tailoring shop till a few years ago, was subsequently engaged in real estate business. Hashim was a major investor in the demolished building, they said.
