  • John Boyega to co-write and star in Attack the Block 2

    Apart from co-producing and starring in the film, John Boyega is also reportedly co-writing Attack the Block 2. Although most known for playing stormtrooper Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, John Boyega made his debut with the alien-invasion British comedy Attack the Block. Almost a decade after the original’s release, a sequel to the film was announced in early 2021. Joe Cornish, who made the first film, is returning to write and direct the sequel.

    The production has just begun on the sequel and Boyega has announced that he will be fully involved with the project right from the scripting stage. The rest of the cast and crew, along with details on the returning cast members, are yet to be confirmed by the makers.  

    When asked if he wanted to return to the Star Wars universe, the actor replied in the negative and went on to say that he is done playing the role. He will next be seen in Viola Davis’ historic epic The Woman King, which tells the story of an all-female military unit who were guarding a kingdom in Africa known as Dahomey. The film is all set to release on 22 September.

    Star Wars actor John Boyega has joined the cast of The Woman King, starring Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu in main roles.

    Billed as a historical epic, the film is currently in works at TriStar Pictures, with The Old Guard-fame Gina Prince-Bythewood wielding the megaphone.

    Actor Lashana Lynch, who is also a part of the upcoming Bond movie, No Time to Die, will be appearing in a prominent role. Meanwhile, Boyega has They Cloned Tyrone and 892 in his pipeline.

  • ‘Attack The Block’ sequel in works with John Boyega returning as lead

    A sequel to 2011’s Attack The Block is set to be made with John Boyega reprising his role from the original. The film will reunite the actor with writer and director Joe Cornish after a decade.

    Boyega took to Instagram to announce the news, adding that he will both star in and produce the sequel. The project is currently in the early stages of development at StudioCanal, Complete Fiction Pictures, UpperRoom Productions and Film 4.

    Plot details are currently under wraps. Along with Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, director Cornish will also produce the sequel with Nira Park and Edgar Wright through their Complete Fiction banner, and James Wilson.

    In the 2011 film, Boyega (as Moses) mobilised his street gang against a group of extraterrestrial invaders looking to take over their neighbourhood in South London.

    The actor was most recently seen in the Red, White and Blue instalment of Steve McQueen’s Amazon Prime and BBC One anthology series, Small Axe.

    Boyega will also be seen in Jeremy Saulnier’s upcoming Netflix thriller, Rebel Ridge, and in the Jamie Foxx-starrer They Cloned Tyrone.

  • Golden Globes 2021: John Boyega wins best supporting actor for ‘Small Axe’

    LOS ANGELES: Actor John Boyega won his first Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a television supporting role for his work in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed anthology series “Small Axe”.

    The “Star Wars” alum played Leroy Logan in the ‘Red, White and Blue’ segment of the series, about the ordeal of a young black Londoner set on helping to break the colour barrier at London’s Metropolitan Police Force in the early 1980s.

    Boyega, who made headlines last June for his moving speech at the Black Lives Matter protest at the UK’s Hyde Park in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in the US, admitted he wasn’t expecting to win.

    “I’m so shocked,” he started his acceptance speech at the virtual ceremony.

    “I thought it was gonna be one of them nights where…you go to your bed and just chill,” Boyega, 28, quipped as he lifted up his leg to show his pants.

    “I’ve got Balenciagas, guys. I’ve got tracking bottoms on my bottoms that I’m comfortable (in), but this is exciting. ” The actor thanked the Hollywood Foriegn Press Association (HFPA), the body that conducts the Golden Globes currently facing fire over its lack of Black representation among its ranks.

    Boyega then expressed gratitude to director McQueen and the cast and crew of the miniseries.

    “I’m absolutely shocked. I don’t even know what to say,” he said.

    The actor’s fellow nominees were Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Brendan Gleeson (“The Comey Rule”), Jim Parsons (“Hollywood”) and Donald Sutherland (“The Undoing”).

  • Robert De Niro, John Boyega to lead Netflix’s ‘The Formula’

    LOS ANGELES: Veteran actor Robert De Niro and “Star Wars” franchise alum John Boyega have teamed up for Netflix’s upcoming thriller “The Formula”.

    Gerard McMurray, the director behind “The First Purge” and “Burning Sands”, will helm the movie, which is based on his original idea, the streamer said in a statement.

    The story will follow a Formula One racing prodigy who is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left.

    McMurray will also produce the film through his recently formed production company Buppie Productions.

    Jane Rosenthal, De Niro and Berry Welsh are other producers.

    Boyega most recently starred in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed anthology film series “Small Axe”.

    He is currently in production on “They Cloned Tyrone” with Jamie Foxx.

    De Niro returns to Netflix following his work in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”, which also stars Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

    His upcoming projects include Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, and David O Russell’s untitled film.
