At the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is no longer a choice but an absolute necessity. He pointed out that current global governance structures are significantly out of sync with the realities of the 21st century.

Prime Minister Modi also stressed the critical need for strong coordination among IBSA nations to combat terrorism, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy and the absence of any justification for double standards. He highlighted the potential of the IBSA forum to foster the creation of global norms for Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are safe, reliable, and centered around human well-being.

Further, he proposed the establishment of the ‘IBSA Digital Innovation Alliance.’ This initiative aims to facilitate the sharing of groundbreaking Digital Public Infrastructure, such as India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and its CoWIN platform for health management. The Prime Minister underscored the significance of IBSA as more than just a trilateral grouping; it represents a vital connection across three continents, three major democratic nations, and three significant economies.

According to official statements, Modi also highlighted the synergistic potential within IBSA for mutual development and serving as a model for sustainable economic growth. Specific areas for enhanced cooperation include millets, natural farming practices, disaster resilience, the transition to green energy, traditional medicine, and bolstering health security.

Recognizing the impactful work of the IBSA Fund in supporting projects across 40 developing nations in sectors like education, health, women’s empowerment, and solar energy, Prime Minister Modi put forward a proposal for an ‘IBSA Fund for Climate Resilient Agriculture.’ This aims to further strengthen South-South cooperation in addressing climate change challenges.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Johannesburg prior to the G20 Summit, expressing gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the warm reception and for hosting the important summit. This visit marked his fourth official engagement in South Africa, following previous visits in 2016 and for BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023. South Africa is currently hosting the first-ever G20 Summit on African soil, a significant event following the African Union’s inclusion as a member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni shared a memorable moment of laughter and warm greetings at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. The candid exchange between the two leaders, which included hearty laughs and handshakes, drew attention during the summit’s opening session. These light-hearted interactions underscore the personal diplomacy often seen at high-level international gatherings. PM Modi also engaged in warm embraces with other world leaders, notably Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, highlighting strong relationships on the global stage. His arrival in Johannesburg was met with a vibrant cultural welcome, including traditional performances and a special program by the Indian diaspora celebrating ‘Rhythms of a United India’. At the summit, Prime Minister Modi advocated for a global shift towards inclusive and sustainable development models, emphasizing the need to learn from civilizational wisdom, especially for regions historically facing resource challenges.

At the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined India’s forward-thinking agenda, emphasizing inclusive and sustainable growth. He called for a fundamental reevaluation of global development paradigms, suggesting that Africa’s first-time hosting of the summit presents a pivotal moment for such a shift. Drawing inspiration from India’s core values, particularly ‘Integral Humanism,’ Modi proposed actionable initiatives designed to foster holistic development. Central to his address was the creation of a ‘Global Traditional Knowledge Repository’ under the G20 framework. This platform, envisioned to be built upon India’s Indian Knowledge Systems initiative, aims to document and disseminate time-tested wisdom on sustainable living, ensuring its preservation for future generations and promoting well-being. Modi stressed that this repository will be instrumental in passing on collective wisdom for enhanced health and prosperity. The Prime Minister also championed the ‘G20–Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative,’ a crucial step to empower the African continent. Recognizing that prevailing global economic models have often excluded large populations and led to environmental degradation, this initiative seeks to bridge the skills gap. The ambitious goal is to train one million certified trainers in Africa within the next decade, fostering self-reliance and sustainable development. This collaborative effort, involving G20 partners, will focus on a train-the-trainers model across various sectors. Furthermore, PM Modi addressed the alarming rise of synthetic drugs and their connection to terrorism, proposing a ‘G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus.’ He highlighted the severe threats posed by substances like fentanyl to public health, social cohesion, and global security, urging collective action to dismantle the illicit drug-terror economy. Finally, India put forth the concept of a ‘G20 Global Healthcare Response Team,’ a rapid deployment force of medical experts from member nations to swiftly address health emergencies and natural disasters, underscoring the principle that global solidarity is key to overcoming crises.

The SA20 league’s 2026 season is set to begin on December 26th. The auction list for this tournament includes numerous players, with James Anderson, the experienced English fast bowler, also registering his name. This could mark Anderson’s debut in the SA20 tournament. With six franchises participating, the bidding for James Anderson will be a major point of interest. The auction is scheduled for September 9th in Johannesburg.

13 Indian players have been included in the auction list for the SA20 2026 season. These players are Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla, Siddharth Kaul, Mahesh Ahir, Anureet Singh, Saral Kanwar, Nikhil Jaga, KS Naveen, Mohammad Faiz, Imran Khan, Atul Yadav, Ansari Maroof, and Venkatesh Gelipele. Among these, the veteran spinner Piyush Chawla has the highest base price at 50 lakh rupees, while Imran Khan’s base price is 20 lakh rupees. The base price for the other Indian players is 10 lakh rupees each.

The base price for James Anderson has not yet been reported. Anderson recently returned to T20 cricket after 11 years, participating in the T20 Blast 2025 for Lancashire. In the T20 Blast, Anderson took 17 wickets in 9 matches with an average of 14.70. He also played two matches for Manchester Originals in the Men’s Hundred 2025 but did not take any wickets.

South African fast-bowling legend Dale Steyn recently expressed his views on James Anderson, saying, “Even if I were not a coach of any team, I would definitely include James Anderson in my team. I hope that some franchise will surely include him in their team.”

The experienced fast bowler has entered his name in the auction for the first time in this tournament. The SA20 promises exciting matches among the six franchises, with all eyes likely on James Anderson, given his extensive experience in T20 cricket.
