  • ‘Please come back, papa’, pleads 10-year-old daughter of soldier killed in Rajouri blast

    By PTI

DALPAT: “Why are you not getting up? I don’t want anything, papa. Please come back,” 10-year-old Pawana Chib cried as she stretched out her hand to touch the face of her father, paratrooper Neelam Singh, who lay in a coffin before her on Saturday.

Standing next to her, Chib’s mother Vandana is staring in disbelief at her husband’s lifeless face held between her hands before she breaks down.

The paratrooper’s seven-year-old son Ankit is also inconsolable.

Singh was among the five soldiers who died in an explosion triggered by terrorists on Friday in the thickly forested Kandi area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district where an operation is underway to flush out terrorists.

As Singh’s mortal remains reached his Dalpat-Chak Kripalpur village here in a Tricolour-wrapped coffin, some wept and others tried to make their way through a crowd of hundreds who had gathered to catch one last glimpse of the “brave son of soil”.

The mortal remains were brought in a cavalcade from the Indian Air Force station in Jammu, where Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, among other top Army, police and administration officials, paid homage to the slain soldier at a wreath-laying ceremony.

Chants of “Neelam Singh Amar Rahe” echoed through the village as Vandana saluted her husband one last time.

Singh was cremated with full military honours. His brother and CISF jawan Angad Singh lit his pyre amid chants of “Jai Shaheed, Jai Army, Jai Hind”.

Recalling the last time Singh visited home, his father Hurdev Singh Chib said he is proud of his son.”I am proud of my son. He was a brave commando who laid down his life-fighting terrorists. He was born a warrior. As a child, he always wanted to join the Army,” Hurdev told PTI.

A few days ago, he had come home for a while, the distraught father recalled, adding,

“He was so dutiful that he just had tea and left. According to Hurdev, Singh was inducted into the Army in 2003. Singh’s father-in-law Captain Raghvir Singh Bhau (retd) echoed Hurdev’s sentiments.”He was brave and never feared anything. He was part of dozens of successful operations in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir. He brought laurels to the para unit and the Army,” he said.

Singh’s cousin Suresh, however, was angry.”There is an attack every six months. How many homes will be destroyed? The forces retaliate and there will be a lull but then there will be another attack and another family will lose its son,” he said.

Villagers described Singh as a helpful man. “I joined the armed forces just because Singh encouraged and helped me. I am indebted to him,” said a villager, Rameshwaram Singh.

Another villager Sarita Devi recalled that Singh brought her medicines and other items whenever she was in need.

  • Pakistan cries foul over India’s decision to hold G20 meeting in Srinagar

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Pakistan has cried foul over India’s decision to host a G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs said, “Pakistan expresses its strong indignation over India’s decision to hold the G-20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar on 22-24 May 2023.”

The meeting comes as India has taken up the G20 Presidency this year and this will be the first international event to be held in Srinagar since the abrogation of Article 370.

“India’s irresponsible move is the latest in a series of self-serving measures to perpetuate its illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir in sheer disregard of the UN Security Council resolutions and in violation of the principles of the UN Charter and the international law. Pakistan vehemently condemns these moves,” Pakistan’s foreign affairs ministry statement said.

India has not issued any response to this statement. However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has in the past always reaffirmed that Kashmir is an integral part of India and no other country has any right to comment on what happens there.

“With its decision to host G-20 events in IOJK (Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir), India is again exploiting its membership of an important international grouping for advancing its self-serving agenda,” the Pakistani statement added.

“For a country that has a grandiose vision about itself and its place in the world, India has repeatedly demonstrated that it is unable to act as a responsible member of the international community,” says the press release issued by Pakistan.

Political and diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan have been downgraded since the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir. On various UN platforms, Pakistan tries to rake up the Kashmir issue and India always gives a befitting rebuttal.

  • Congress demands response from PM Modi on Gujarat conman who posed as PMO official on visit to Kashmir

    Express News Service

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Congress held a press conference in Ahmedabad on Friday, calling for strict action against conman Kiran Patel who visited Jammu and Kashmir in the guise of an official from the Prime Minister’s Office and moved with Z-plus security.

Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said, “When information about Kiran Patel’s visit to the extremely sensitive region of Jammu and Kashmir as a PMO official came to light, it raised major concerns for everyone, especially on the nation’s security. The Prime Minister must respond to the citizens of the nation.”

Patel pretended to be an Additional Director (Strategy and Campaign) in the Prime Minister’s Office and even had a PMO visiting card. He had been arrested by police in Srinagar on March 3. After the expiry of 15 days of police custody, he has now been sent to 15 days judicial custody.

During questioning, the investigating agencies discovered that Patel was originally from Isanpur, Ahmedabad. He had brought a bungalow only a year before.

His wife Malini Patel has claimed that he is innocent. Talking to local media in Ahmedabad, she said, “Kiran is presently in Srinagar but he has been framed. Never have we done anything wrong. And from Kashmir, we had a favorable response. Kiran went there to help Kashmir flourish, but he was framed there. All prior cases against us have been dismissed.”

Kiran Patel, who is quite articulate, loved leading a glamorous life. He has posted images on social media of himself with BJP leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He also claimed affiliation with numerous foreign universities by posting letters from those institutions on social media.

Patel is also the founder of an NGO in Ahmedabad, During the lockdown, he launched a campaign in which his volunteers distributed free medicine to people in need across Ahmedabad. He also created a WhatsApp group called ‘RP Helping Hands’ for this purpose in which he used to connect with people and update them on his work and where he went.

This is not the first time that an FIR has been registered against Patel.

“Two previous FIRs were lodged against him in Ahmedabad, in which there were problems with check returns and personal dues. Aside from this, there are no cases against him. He was given security by a political friend to travel to Kashmir,” Patel’s attorney Nisar Vaidya told local media.

Patel is active on social networking sites like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. His account is also verified on Twitter.

  • Article 370 revocation: Militancy violence and L&O incidents declined in 3 years

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR: The militancy violence and law and order incidents in Valley declined significantly and 174 police and security men and 110 civilians were killed in militancy violence in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K state into two Union Territories (UTs) by the centre on August 5, 2019, according to police data.

While sharing figures about pre and post Article 370 security scenarios in the militancy-hit Valley, police said 174 police and security men were killed in militancy violence in Kashmir in a three years period from August 5, 2019 till August 4, 2022.

During the three years period, pre Article 370 revocation (5-8-2016 to 4-8-2019) 290 police and security men were killed in the militancy violence.

On August 5, 2019, centre scrapped J&K’s special status and bifurcated J&K into two UTs – Jammu and Kashmir (with legislature) and Ladakh (without legislature).

The police data further state that as against 930 militancy incidents in three years before Article 370 revocation, 617 militancy-related incidents were reported in the Valley in three years post Article 370 abrogation.

It states that civilian killings also witnessed a decline in the three-year period post Article 370 revocation.

“110 civilians were killed in three years post Article 370 revocation while 191 civilians died in militancy violence in three years before Article 370 abrogation,” reveals the police data.

The data further reveals that there was no civilian casualty in the law and order situation in the Valley after Article 370 revocation.

“In three years before Article 370 revocation, 124 civilians were killed in law and order situations in the Valley,” it states.

There has also been a big drop in law and order incidents in the last three years.

As against 3686 law and order incidents in Valley in three years before Article 370 revocation, only 438 law and order incidents were reported in Kashmir in three years post Article 370 abrogation, reveals the data.

The authorities had imposed a security clampdown in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Article 370 revocation on August 5, 2019 to prevent backlash against abrogation of J&K’ s special status. All top mainstream leaders including three former J&K Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah were arrested. The three former CMs were among a dozen mainstream leaders booked under stringent Public Safety Act (PSA).

Besides, separatist leaders and activists, civil society members, traders, lawyers, youth were also arrested and lodged in jails within and outside J&K.

  • Will Naqvi get L-G post of J&K ahead of assembly poll?

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR:  With BJP denying Rajya Sabha ticket to its Muslim face and Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, speculations are rife that he may be posted as the Lt Governor of Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.

There is a growing buzz in J&K that Naqvi, who is the prominent Muslim face of the saffron party, may take over as the constitutional head of J&K after the conclusion of Amarnath Yatra in August. Naqvi’s RS term is expiring and the party has neither given him RS ticket nor shown any inclination to field him from any of the vacant LS seats.

Naqvi, who is currently the Union Minister of Minority Affairs, has been familiar with Kashmir. He had campaigned for party candidates in the 2014 assembly and 2020 DDC polls in the Valley. Naqvi was the first of the five Union ministers to visit J&K after Article 370 was revoked and J&K state was bifurcated into two UTs.

The talk of possible change in guard in J&K has come after the targeted killings by militants in the Valley. It is being said that the Centre is unhappy with the L-G administration over the targeted killings.  Political observers say that with the first-ever assembly elections in J&K Union Territory likely to be held soon, the Modi government may go for change of guard in the UT and Naqvi’s appointment may be seen as an effort by the BJP to reach out to the Muslim population.

However, a BJP leader said L-G’s is a constitutional post and it does not matter whether the person is a Hindu or Muslim. “The person who comes out with good policies will have a positive impact on the people,” he said. However, some political observers say that BJP is too “secretive” when it comes to nominating persons for  top posts.

    Express News Service

SRINAGAR: Three-time former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, whose name was proposed as a possible joint candidate for the office of president on Friday withdrew his name from the race saying he has a lot more active politics ahead and is looking forward to making a positive contribution in service of J&K and country.

In a statement, Abdullah, who is Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, said “I am honoured to have had my name proposed as a possible joint opposition candidate for the office of President of India by Mamata Banerjee”.

He said after Mamata proposed his name, he received a number of calls from opposition leaders offering their support for his candidature.

“I have taken a few days to discuss this unexpected development with my family and senior colleagues. I am deeply touched by the support that I’ve received & honoured to have been considered for the highest office in the country,” Abdullah said.

He said he believes J&K is passing through a critical juncture and his efforts are required to help navigate these uncertain times.

“I have a lot more active politics ahead of me and look forward to making a positive contribution in the service of J&K and the country. Therefore I would like to respectfully withdraw my name from consideration and I look forward to supporting the joint opposition consensus candidate,” said Abdullah.

He said he was grateful to Mamata for proposing his name.

“I’m also grateful to all the senior leaders who offered me their support,” added NC president.

Abdullah is expected to play a key role in the party’s electoral politics in J&K.

He will lead the party’s campaign in the first-ever Assembly polls of J&K Union Territory, which may be held by the end of this year.

  • Two held in connection with CRPF personnel’s killing in J&K’s Shopian

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: Within hours of the killing of a CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, police arrested the assailant and recovered the weapon of offence on Sunday.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said an over ground worker (OGW) or a terrorist associate has also been arrested in connection with the case.

Terrorists shot dead off-duty CRPF personnel Mukhtar Ahmad at his home in the Check Chotipora area of Shopian in south Kashmir on Saturday evening.

“We have arrested #killer of CRPF personnel. #Weapon of #offence (pistol) recovered on his disclosure. 01 OGW who accompanied him during #terror crime also arrested,” the IGP said in a tweet.

He said the crime was committed on the directions of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Abid Ramzan Sheikh.

In a statement later, a police spokesperson identified the alleged assailant as Rukhsar Sadiq Thoker, a resident of Rangmarg-Sedow and an active terrorist. The weapon of offence — a pistol — was also seized from his possession.

“During the course of investigation, he (Thoker) disclosed the identity of another terrorist associate who facilitated him in the commission of the crime. He (the terrorist associate) has been identified as Amir Ahmad Dewan, a resident of Bohrihallan in Shopian, who too was arrested and on his disclosure, a motorcycle used in the commission of the crime was recovered,” the spokesperson said.

During further questioning, Thoker confessed that he is a close associate of Sheikh, the self-styled commander of the LeT and a hybrid terrorist of the said organisation.

“Furthermore, he revealed that he, along with his associate, had committed the crime on Sheikh’s directions in order to create an atmosphere of terror in the area,” the spokesperson said.

Investigation in the case is going on and further leads are expected, he added.
