  • NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad gets anticipatory bail in molestation case

    By PTI

THANE: A court here on Tuesday granted pre-arrest bail to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA and former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad in a molestation case registered against him.

Sessions court judge PM Gupta granted the anticipatory bail on a bond of Rs 15,000 with certain conditions, the lawyer representing Awhad told reporters.

The prosecution opposed the plea saying it is a sensitive case.

Awhad’s lawyer said the charge against his client was politically motivated.

The Mumbra police registered a case after midnight on Monday against Awhad under Indian Penal Code section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) on the complaint of a woman.

The complainant alleged the Mumbra-Kalwa MLA pushed her while making way for himself during the dispersal of the crowd after an event of chief minister Eknath Shinde in Mumbra on Sunday evening, as per the First Information Report (FIR).

Awhad on Monday denied the charge and announced he would resign in view of “fake” cases being registered against him.

  • Distortion of history will give wrong message to future generation: NCP leader Awhad

    By PTI

THANE:  Former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad, who was arrested two days back in a case of disrupting a show of Marathi film “Har Har Mahadev” at a theatre here, has said distorting history will give a wrong message to the future generation.

Talking to reporters in Maharashtra’s Thane city after being granted bail by a court here on Saturday, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader maintained that the movie distorted the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahara.

This has not only defamed the Maratha king but also tarnished the state’s image and it will not be tolerated, he said.

On November 7, Awhad and his supporters forcibly stopped a show of “Har Har Mahadev” at a multiplex inside a mall in Thane city, alleging the film distorted the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Some moviegoers were also beaten up when they protested against the disruption, videos of the incident showed.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered over the incident at Vartak Nagar police station under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (assault) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).

Awhad claimed he was asked to be present at the Vartak Nagar police station for an enquiry at 5 pm on Friday, but was placed under arrest at 2.30 pm without proper legal formalities.

The police were helpless and the orders had come from “higher authorities”, he further claimed, adding that he had saved the man who was allegedly manhandled at the multiplex on November 7.

Awhad said he was ready to face the consequences of fighting against the distortion of historical facts.

“Presenting history in a distorted manner will give a wrong message to the future generation and this should be stopped,” the NCP leader said.

He said the censor board while certifying a movie, should also verify the historical facts presented in it.

By dubbing the movie in different languages, there was a conspiracy to defame the Maratha warrior king, Awhad claimed.

On Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray giving a voice-over for the movie, Awhad appealed to the political leader to desist from giving the voice-over for films which distort history.

  • Maharashtra Minister Jitendra Awhad arrested in abduction and assault case, gets bail

    By PTI

THANE: Maharashtra Housing Minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad was arrested on Thursday and later released on bail in a case of alleged assault on a social media user at his house.

Awhad appeared at the Vartak Nagar police station in Thane city in connection with the case on Thursday, said a senior police official.

His statement was recorded and he was produced before a magistrate who released the minister on a cash bond of Rs 10,000 and one surety, the official added.

Anand Karmuse, the complainant, had alleged that he was taken to Awhad’s bungalow and beaten up in the minister’s presence over a social media post.

The Bombay High Court had directed the Thane police to conduct proper probe and take necessary action after Karmuse sought Awhad to be made an accused.

Karmuse, a civil engineer, had alleged that some police personnel visited him on the evening of April 5, 2020, and told him that he would have to go to the police station, but instead took him to Awhad’s bungalow.

At the bungalow, he was beaten up by ten to fifteen men over a morphed picture of the minister he had shared on Facebook, Karmuse said.

Awhad was present during the incident, he alleged.

The minister had denied the allegations.

As per a police statement, a case has been registered at Vartak Nagar police station under IPC sections 324 (assault), 365 (kidnapping) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya demanded that Awhad be sacked from the cabinet.

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Pravin Darekar alleged that the arrest and subsequent bail seemed be “staged by the state government”.

“He was merely taken to police station and immediately given bail,” the BJP leader said.

  • ‘Nizam followers ruling some areas of Marathwada’: Awhad’s jibe to Owaisi

    By PTI

AURANGABAD: The people of Marathwada fought and liberated themselves from the rule of the (Hyderabad) Nizam but “followers” of the latter’s policies are now ruling many local bodies in the region, state minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad said here on Sunday.

He was apparently referring to the Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen that has a strong presence in the region, with one of its members, Imtiaz Jaleel, being Aurangabad Lok Sabha MP.

“The people of Marathwada stood firmly against the Nizam who chose Pakistan when asked to choose between India and Pakistan during Independence.

However, followers of the Nizam’s policies are now ruling several local bodies in Marathwada,” Awhad said.

The AIMIM is often accused by opponents of having historical ties to the Nizam’s rule in the erstwhile state of Hyderabad, with its Aurangabad MP Jaleel being routinely asked about his absence from official Marathwada Liberation Day celebrations held every year on September 17.

Awhad was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Marathwada Marathi Literary Meet organised by the Marathwada Sahitya Parishad and Loksamvad Foundation.

  • Anger in Maharashtra Cabinet over phone tapping: Jitendra Awhad

    By PTI
MUMBAI: The `phone tapping’ by the intelligence department evoked angry reactions in the meeting of the Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday, housing minister Jitendra Awhad said here.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Speaking to reporters, NCP leader Awhad alleged that then Commissioner of Intelligence Rashmi Shukla intercepted calls without permission from then Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sitaram Kunte.

Permission was sought for intercepting the calls of certain persons but actually the calls of some other persons were tapped, he claimed.

Shukla was not available for comment.

Awhad, however, said there was no discussion in the cabinet on former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh’s allegations of corruption against Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a letter to Thackeray.

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday met the Union Home Secretary in Delhi and demanded a CBI probe into a purported state intelligence department report on “corruption” in police transfers in Maharashtra.

He had also claimed to have data of telephone calls intercepted by Shukla in which names of several key police officers figure.

“There were angry reactions in the Cabinet meeting. Nobody (from among ministers) had hand in the transfers. All the transfers took place through a proper government channel,” he said.

As much as 90 per cent of transfers which are mentioned in the report never happened, he claimed.

“Why is the government being defamed (then)? Why even officials are being defamed, as if they owe their posts to recommendations. Police officials should file a defamation case against Shukla,” Awhad said.

Later he tweeted that some of the “angry” officials named by Shukla in her report on alleged transfer scam will be giving a memorandum to the state government and file a defamation case.

Two months ago, Shukla had admitted that she made a mistake and the government “forgave” her generously, the minister further claimed.

“How the government would know then that the report would be used two months later to target it,” Awhad asked.

  • Maharashtra slum-dwellers can sell their new house after five years: Minister

    By Express News Service
MUMBAI: Maharashtra housing minister Jitendra Awhad on Friday announced that slum dwellers who got a new house in the redevelopment project can sell their houses within five years from the date of slum demolitions.

Awhad said that there are many people who could not afford to stay in the new high rise towers.

“These people always struggle to sell their property. They have to wait for ten years to sell this developed property. We decided to bring down this duration from 10 years to five years while the five years will be counted from the date of demolition of the slum, not the occupation date in the new building. This move will give relief to several people,” the minister said.

The minister said that the government has also identified 55 sea-facing slums that they have decided to redevelop. “In Mumbai, the sea-facing property hold high value. There are several slums that need to be developed urgently. This will also open the land bank. So, the government can rehab the slum dwellers and the remaining land can be used for commercial or residential purpose. It will generate huge revenue for the government,” the housing minister said.
