  • Five men, two minors arrested for gang rape of techie in Jharkhand’s Chaibasa

    CHAIBASA: Seven people, including two minors, were nabbed for the gang rape of the 26-year-old software engineer in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district, police said on Sunday.

    The arrests were made after interrogating some locals who frequent the secluded spot near the old aerodrome in Chaibasa where the incident happened, they said.

    The woman, who works at a well-known IT company, was out with her boyfriend on a two-wheeler on Thursday evening when the crime happened.

    A group of people stopped the couple, beat them up and allegedly raped the woman after taking her to a nearby secluded spot, police said.

    The arrests were made by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is formed to probe the case, Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar said.

    The woman’s wallet and mobile phones were recovered from those arrested, he said.

    After raping her, the accused left her at the spot and fled.

    As she was walking back from the spot, a police van spotted her and she narrated the whole incident to them, an officer said.

    They rushed her to the hospital and started an investigation, he added.

    The woman is here since the outbreak of the pandemic as she is working from her home.

  • Seven accused of raping minor arrested in Jharkhand’s Godda

    GODDA: Seven people accused of raping a 17-year-old girl and uploading her video on social media have been arrested in Jharkhand’s Godda district, police said on Wednesday.

    The incident took place at a place under Rajabhitta police station area on Monday when the girl was allegedly taken to an abandoned place by the culprits.

    On the complaint of the mother of the minor girl, an FIR was registered against the seven accused at Rajabhitta police station on Tuesday, police said.

    Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anand Mohan Singh said that after getting information about the incident, the girl was sent to the local Sadar Hospital for medical examination, following which a police team was formed, and raids were conducted to arrest the accused.

    The police have also confiscated the mobile from which the video of the gang rape was made viral, the SDPO said.

  • Eight get life term for raping, murdering woman in Jharkhand

    MEDININAGAR: A court in Jharkhand’s Palamu district on Thursday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a woman six years ago.

    Convicting them in the case, district and sessions judge Santosh Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh on each of them, failing which they will have to serve two more years of imprisonment.

    They had on March 16, 2016, entered the victim’s house in a village under Patan police station area, took her to a secluded place on a motorcycle and took turns in raping her.

    Later, they strangulated her to death and buried the body on the bank of a river.

    The body was recovered four days after the incident.

    The accused people were subsequently arrested.

  • Minor gang-raped in Jharkhand; prohibitory orders imposed after protests break out

    BOKARO: A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Jharkhand’s Bokaro following which protests broke out in the area prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders in some parts of the district.

    Earlier protesters on Thursday blocked NH 23 after which police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse them.

    Police said the protesters blocked the National Highway 23 (Bokaro-Ramgarh-Ranchi) at Petarwar Chowk under Petarwar police station and pelted stones on them resulting in injuries to several policemen and people.

    “A 17-year old girl was allegedly raped by two persons of different community on Wednesday night at Bundu panchayat under Petarwar police station. Both the accused, who claim to be her friends have been arrested and an FIR has been lodged in the case,” Bokaro Superintendent of Police, Chandan Kumar Jha told PTI.

    Jha said the protesters had blocked the National Highway 23 while some outsiders tried to create law and order trouble and pelted stones on police.

    The police in turn registered an FIR and arrested two of the protesters, he said.

    Meanwhile, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 in Petarwar area which will be applicable till midnight of March 13.

    “Due to the criminal act committed…in Petarwar, there is a lot of tension between the two communities in Petarwar Chowk, around Petarwar Masjid, Sadmakala Panchayat, Bundu Panchayat which may disrupt communal harmony. Under the circumstances, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Bermo (Tenughat) Ananth Kumar, using the powers conferred under Section 144 of CrPC, has issued prohibitory orders in Petarwar Panchayat area, Petarwar Tenu Chowk, Petarwar Chowk to Thana Road, Sadmakala Panchayat area, Gundu Panchayat area and around Petarwar Masjid,” a statement from the district administration said.

    The order prohibited gathering of five or more persons besides carrying of any type of firearms or organising any procession.

    The district administration also cautioned people against any provocative social media post.

    Earlier the jam at Bokaro could be cleared this evening after about six hours as the local residents had resorted to it on Thursday morning demanding suspension of officer-in-charge of Petarwal police station.

    Apprehending communal tension the police have deployed a huge force in the area.

    Bokaro Deputy Commissioner, Kuldeep Chaudhary said a magistrate along with police personnel are keeping a vigil in the area while Civil Surgeon has been directed for conducting medical examination of the victim.

    Lambodar Mahto, MLA from Gomia earlier sat on a dharna at the state assembly’s main gate and raised the issue in the assembly later.

    Mahto demanded a fast-track hearing of the case which was supported by Hazaribag MLA Manish Jaiswal.

    Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chaudhary sat on dharna at Bokaro Sadar Hospital with his supporters demanding justice to the victim.

  • Two awarded life term for raping minor girl in Jharkhand

    RAMGARH: A court in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district on Saturday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2019.

    Radha Krishna, Additional District Judge-1, Ramgarh, awarded the punishment to the two men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    The court also slapped a fine of Rs 80,000 on each of them, and in default of payment, they will undergo three years of additional imprisonment.

    Manish Kumar Mahto and Basu Bedia were arrested in February 2019 on the charge of raping the girl.

    Altogether 10 witnesses were examined in the case.

  • 60-year-old woman raped in Jharkhand

    SIMDEGE: A 60-year-old woman was allegedly raped in Jharkhand’s Simdega district and a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with it, police said on Friday.

    The woman, who works in a hotel at Hurda, was allegedly raped on Thursday when she was alone, the police said in a statement.

    The man was caught by the police when he was trying to flee to Delhi via Odisha fearing arrest.

    He was forwarded to judicial custody by a local court before which he was produced during the day.

  • Jharkhand gang-rape: Remaining seven accused arrested

    GUMLA: All the remaining seven people, wanted in connection with the gang-rape of two minor cousins in Jharkhand’s Gumla district, were arrested, police said on Tuesday.

    The two tribal girls were raped allegedly by 10 men on October 15 evening and the police had earlier arrested two of them, while another accused died by suicide.

    The police picked up the remaining seven accused, aged between 19 and 26 years, from various places of the district on Monday.

    The gang-rape took place when the girls along with their 20-year-old male cousin were returning home in Gurdari police station area from a Durga puja fair.

    The 10 accused in three motorcycles intercepted them and passed lewd comments at the girls.

    As the man protested, the accused assaulted him.

    He, however, managed to free himself and rushed to their village to seek help, Gumla Superintendent of Police Ehtesham Waquarib said on Monday.

    The miscreants then dragged the two girls to a forest and took turns to rape them.

    The accused persons had threatened them with dire consequences if they raised an alarm.

    They then beat the victims, took them to another nearby place and raped them again.

    The victims could identify two accused who had been arrested and forwarded to jail.

  • Speech-impaired woman raped in Jharkhand’s Godda

    GODDA: A 37-year-old speech-impaired widow was allegedly raped by two home guards posted at a Circle Office in Godda district, a police officer said.

    The incident took place when the victim along with a seven-year-old girl of the neighbourhood had taken animals for grazing in the ground of the Circle Office under Mehrama police station area on Sunday afternoon.

    After reaching home, the woman communicated her ordeal to her mother and neighbours through sign language.

    Her relatives and villagers immediately approached the Block Development Officer (BDO) Abhisekh Singh demanding justice.

    Meanwhile, one of the accused who had accompanied a Circle Officer to the village was taken into custody for interrogation.

    The other culprit is absconding, the police said.

    Deputy Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Tiwari said police have taken the incident seriously.

  • Dalit girl gangraped in Jharkhand, three arrested

    HAZARIBAG: A 16-year-old Dalit girl has been allegedly gangraped in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district, police said on Tuesday.

    Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chouthe said that three of the five accused have been arrested and a manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining two.

    The incident took place in a village in Daroo police station area on Sunday night when the survivor, a student, and her two friends went near a pond to relieve themselves, the officer said.

    Five motorcycle-borne people hailing from a neighbouring village abducted the survivor and took her to a secluded place, where they took turns to rape her and videographed the incident.

    The accused threatened the survivor that if she revealed the incident to anyone or approached the police, they would release the video on social media.

    They then left her at the spot and fled the crime scene, he said.

    The girl lost consciousness due to her injuries and returned home after regaining consciousness.

    She then revealed the incident to her family, who rushed her to Hazaribag Medical College and Hospital, and the attending doctors informed the police during her admission.

    She is undergoing treatment at the hospital and her condition is stated to be stable, Chouthe said.

    The survivor identified three of the accused by their names, who were then arrested from various parts of the district.

    She could not name the other two accused who are still at large, the officer said.

    A case under sections of the Indian Penal Code, POCSO Act and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered.

    The SP has directed officials at the Daroo police station to file the chargesheet as early as possible so that they can move the fast-track court for a speedy trial.

    Chief Minister Hemant Soren tweeted, “I am hurt and distressed by this unfortunate incident in Hazaribag. Hazaribag police arrested three suspects and conducting operation to nab two more suspects responsible for this heinous crime. The state government is committed to the safety and security of all our citizens.”

    Describing the incident as “very painful”, JMM MLA Sita Soren demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent action against them.
