  • JDU MLA Gopal Mandal claims he ensured BJP candidate’s defeat in adjoining Bihar seat

    By PTI
PATNA: In an embarrassment to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), a party MLA has claimed to have ensured the defeat of an “arrogant” BJP candidate in an adjoining constituency by refusing to campaign in favour of the latter.

A video clip of Narendra Kumar Niraj alias Gopal Mandal, the third-term MLA from Gopalpur in Bhagalpur district, went viral on social media on Tuesday.

Mandal can be heard, in the clip, making many uncharitable remarks against district BJP chief Rohit Pandey who was fielded from Bhagalpur seat but lost to Ajeet Sharma of the Congress.

Mandal says in the video “whoever I campaigned for, in adjoining seats, won. But, I did not canvas for Rohit Pandey who has a lot of arrogance (ghamand)” and he lost.

Mandal also expressed resentment over Pandeys failure to greet him while they were sharing the dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an election rally.

“The result BJP lost one of its pocket boroughs”, the MLA said.

Named after the eponymous town, Bhagalpur was held by the BJP from 1990 till 2014 when Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the sitting MLA, got elected to the Lok Sabha from Buxar and ended up in the union council of ministers.

Sharma wrested the seat for the Congress in the ensuing by-poll and retained it, defeating Choubeys son Arijit Shashwat, in the assembly polls of 2015.

He made a hat-trick in the assembly polls last year, defeating Pandey by a slender margin of just over 1,000 votes.

JD(U) leaders requested on condition of anonymity that Mandals averment must not be seen as the partys official line but a “personal opinion” of the MLA.

This is the second instance, in recent past, of the party facing an embarrassment over the maverick MLAs behaviour.

A few weeks ago, another video had gone viral in which the MLA was seen gyrating alongside dancing girls.

BJP spokesman Nikhil Anand trained his guns at the JD(U) MLA over his remark that Pandey “did not look like a Brahmin”.

“The remark betrays a caste-based complex (jaatiwadi kuntha)…such utterances lead to social chasms. Parties swearing by social justice must conduct workshops for educating their cadre”, he said.

RLSP national general secretary Madhaw Anand, whose party is eyeing a return to the NDA fold, voiced disapproval of the “anargal bayaan” (nonsensical statement) and said leaders of parties must rein in their loose cannons.

The Congress, meanwhile, chose to take a dig at the NDA over the episode.

“This is kharmaas (an inauspicious month as per Hindu calendar, which ends on Makar Sankranti). Let the period end and there will be a kharmandal (turmoil) in the NDA which would be hard to control, “, said BPCC spokesman Rajesh Rathore.

Rathores remark was an indirect reference to claims made by the RJD, its senior alliance partner in the state, about the possibility of NDA MLAs, mostly from the JD(U), crossing over to the Grand Alliance.

The RJD has been insisting that JD(U) MLAs were feeling stifled on account of its diminished clout in the NDA and an aggressive stance adopted by the BJP which has returned with a tally, in assembly polls, far greater than that of the Chief Ministers party.

  • ‘Political jealousy’: Ex dy CM Sushil Modi accuses Lalu Prasad Yadav of ‘destabilising’ Bihar govt

    Express News Service
PATNA: Political slugfest ensued in Bihar when BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi accused incarcerated RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav of making attempts to destabilize the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government from his jail cell in Ranchi.

Alleging Yadav of violating jail rules, Modi said that the former has been passing regular instructions via phone to his party members as to how to go about the ‘plan’.

It may be recalled that it was Sushil Modi who released an audio clip wherein he claimed Yadav was luring a BJP MLA to remain absent during the election of the assembly speaker.

Modi said a strong alliance between Bihar and JD-U, barring a few months in between, has been in place in the state for almost two decades and that the RJD is burning in ‘political jealousy’ over it.

“..A short bad phase came and passed but the people have given us an opportunity to serve the state once more,” he added.

Mutual respect and trust in the NDA have kept the alliance afloat and rescued the state from ‘dark ages’, the former deputy CM said.

“Electricity has reached every village in the state. Bihar is out of the ‘lantern era’. The state has also got new institutions of higher education but the opposition has no agenda but to ruin it all again,” he said.

Modi said that the government is working on a plan to extend employment to 20 lakh people and the Department of Industries intends to introduce a ‘single window system’.

The RJD had earlier offered a chance to Nitish Kumar to join the Grand Alliance after quitting the NDA and become the opposition’s projected PM candidate for 2024 general elections, in lieu of extending support to Tejashwi Yadav as Bihar’s next Chief Minister.

An offer JD-U rejected with the party’s national president, RCP Singh, categorically stating that JD-U doesn’t need anyone’s help. “We (JDU) will stay ahead because of our strength”, Singh said.

BJP to impart training to its teams in RajgirAmid speculations about JD-U, BJP ties after the Arunachal Pradesh incident, the saffron party has decided to impart training to its teams at Rajgir, the home district of CM Nitish Kumar.

Party sources said that newly appointed district officer-bearers and state party office bearers would be trained at a training camp in Nalanda on January 9.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Premchandra Mishra cautioned the JD-U and said that the Chief Minister should be wary of BJP’s motives ahead of the upcoming training session, which could be intended at

  • JDU is not in favor of making law against love jihad, said- hatred will arise in society

At a time when BJP-ruled states are enacting laws against conversion for marriage, JDU, its ally in Bihar, on Sunday emphasized that such laws would create hatred and division in society that it does not approve.

JDU leader KC Tyagi told reporters after the party’s national executive meeting here, “An atmosphere of hatred and divisiveness is being created in society in the name of love jihad. The word ‘love jihad’ is used by right-wing activists by Hindu girls. To refer to the alleged campaign of forcing conversion under the guise of love.

In BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, the cabinet on Saturday approved a bill to enact strict laws against alleged ‘love jihad’.

  • Nitish Kumar can swear in as CM on this date

After the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) got a majority in the Bihar Election 2020, all eyes are on the formation of the next government. There is a possibility that a new government may be formed next week after Diwali. Informed sources gave this information on Wednesday and said that JDU President Nitish Kumar (NItish Kumar) will once again become the Chief Minister. Growing on the path of being the Chief Minister for the longest time in Bihar, Nitish Kumar may take oath on Monday, November 16 or after next week.

Earlier, at the end of November, he can send the resignation to the Governor in view of the term of the current government. The record of the longest Chief Minister in Bihar till date is in the name of Shri Krishna Singh, who held this post for 17 years and 52 days. Nitish Kumar has so far lived in this post for 14 years and 82 days. After taking oath as Chief Minister, Kumar’s name would fall into the distinct category of being sworn in as Chief Minister seven times in the last two decades.

Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister for the first time in the year 2000 but had to resign due to lack of support from the MLAs required for majority. Kumar became the Chief Minister in 2005 when the NDA got an absolute majority. In 2014, in view of the poor performance of JDU in the Lok Sabha elections, Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister on moral grounds. However, in less than a year, he returned to power.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) have been imposed in and around the counting centres to prevent the gathering of people.

This time Bihar witnessed a triangular contest with the ruling JDU-BJP alliance and grand alliance (RJD, Congress and others) and Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which is eying the role of a kingmaker in case of a hung Assembly.

On one side is the NDA which includes JD-U (115 seats), BJP (110 seats), Vikassheel Insaan Party (11 seats) and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (7 seats).

Mahagathbandhan constitutes RJD (144 seats) and the Congress with 70 seats. Other alliance partners include the CPI-ML (19 seats), CPI (6 seats), and the CPIM (4 seats).

Incumbent chief minister Nitish Kumar was the face of the NDA while Mahagathbandhan declared Tejashwi Yadav as its chief minister candidate.

LJP contested over 130 seats on its own and fielded candidates against all JD-U nominees and only a few against BJP.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is eyeing his fourth term with ally BJP by his side. In 2015, however, Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) fought polls with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress under the Mahagathbandhan banner. The BJP-led NDA had fought the elections with LJP and other allies.

RJD with 80 seats had emerged as the single largest party in the elections, followed by JD-U (71) paving way for Nitish Kumar to take oath as Bihar Chief Minister for the third term. BJP was reduced to 53 seats and got the largest vote share (24.42 per cent).

However, in 2017, differences emerged between the RJD and JD-U, resulting in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar returning to the NDA.

The exit polls differed in their prediction of tallies of major players in Bihar assembly polls with most predicting an edge for Mahagathbandhan or its victory.
