  • Hizbul Mujahideen Operational commander among two militants killed in J&K’s Kulgam gunfight

    SRINAGAR: The operational commander of Hizbul Mujahideen was among two militants killed in an overnight gunfight with security forces at Chawalgam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

    A police official said “one militant was killed in the gunfight on Thursday while another was killed in the firefight on Friday early morning.”

    He identified the deceased militants as Shiraz Molvi and Yawar Bhat, both belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen.

    According to police official, Shiraz Molvi was A++ categorized militant and was active since 2016.

    “Shiraz was Hizb’s operational commander for Kashmir,” he said, adding 19 FIRs were registered against him.

    The official further said Yawar had joined militancy in March this year and two FIRs were registered against them.

    The joint contingent of police, CRPF and army had launched a search operation in Chawalgam area of Kulgam yesterday after receiving inputs about the presence of militants there.

    Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said the militant killed in last evening’s encounter at Bemina area of Srinagar has been identified as Aamir Riyaz R/o Khrew, Pulwama.

    He was affiliated with militant outfit Mujahideen Gazwatul Hind and was a relative of one of the accused of February 14, 2019 Lethpora militant attack in which 40 CRPF men were killed, the IGP said.

    “Aamir was assigned the task to carry out a fidayeen attack,” the IGP said.

  • 7 encounters in two weeks in Jammu and Kashmir

    SRINAGAR:  There has been a surge in the number of gunfights between terrorists and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir. In the last two weeks alone, there were seven gunfights, killing 18 terrorists and an Army personnel

    Of the seven encounters, five took place in south Kashmir and one each in Srinagar and north Kashmir.On July 10, three Lashkar terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag. One of them, identified as Lashkar district commander Arif Hajam, was involved in the killing of Army jawan Havaldar Manzoor Beigh of 162 Territorial Army (TA) on June 6, 2019.

    On July 8, four local terrorists, three belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba and another from Albadar, were killed in two gunfights in south Kashmir–one in Pulwama and another in Kulgam. On July 7, a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Mehraj-ud-Din Halwai alias Ubaid, who was active in militancy since 2012 and was also tech-savvy, was killed in an encounter after his arrest in Kupwara.

    On July 2, five Lashkar terrorists, including a Pakistani citizen, were killed in a gunfight with troops in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. One of the slain militants was identified as LeT district commander as Nishaz Lone alias Khitab.
