  • EAM Jaishankar holds talk on intra-Afghan dialogue

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had a telephonic conversation with US Special envoy for Afghanisatan Zalmay Khalilzad on Sunday where the leaders discussed the latest developments in the intra-Afghan peace dialogue.

“Received a call from US Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad @US4AfghanPeace. Discussed latest developments pertaining to peace talks. We will remain in touch,” the EAM tweeted. This is the second time since November that the two leaders have discussed the peace process. In November, Jaishankar and Khalilzad had held talks during the US envoy’s visit to India with regard to the historic peace negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government and related issues.

India has been keenly monitoring the process, which began with the signing of a peace deal between the US and the Taliban last February with Jaishankar attending the opening ceremony of the talks in Doha virtually. India was represented by the Indian envoy to Doha during the opening ceremony.

According to the deal, US would withdraw its troops from Afghanistan, effectively culminating an 18-year-old war with the Taliban in Afghanistan. India has maintained that the peace process should not create a power vacuum giving a chance to terrorists to relocate. New Delhi has said that the process should be Afghan-led and for Afghanistan. India has been a major stakeholder in Afghanistan and has extended developmental assistance to tune of around $3 billion in the last few years to the country.

  • No territory conceded, says MEA as Jaishankar, Wang discuss implementation of ‘Moscow pact’ on border standoff

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said it has not conceded any territory as part of the disengagement agreement with China and asserted that it has rather enforced observance of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to prevent any unilateral change in the status quo.

At an online media briefing here, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said there has not been any change in India’s position on the LAC and the mutual redeployment as a result of the disengagement process should not be misrepresented.

Asked about the recent agreement on the de-escalation process in Ladakh’s Pangong Lake area, he said the factual position has been very well conveyed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and in a Defence Ministry statement, which he said was aimed at setting the record straight in view of certain misleading and misinformed comments that appeared in the media.

“India has not conceded any territory as a result of this agreement. On the contrary, it has enforced observance and respect for LAC and it has prevented any unilateral change in the status quo,” Srivastava said.

Last week, armies of the two countries which have been locked in a standoff in eastern Ladakh concluded withdrawal of troops and weapons from north and south banks of Pangong Tso in the high-altitude region.

    However, issues still remain.

During the talks, India is learnt to have insisted on a faster disengagement process in areas like Hot Springs, Gogra and Depsang to bring down tension in the region.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Thursday and discussed the implementation of their ‘Moscow Agreement’ on the border standoff in eastern Ladakh as well as reviewed the status of disengagement.

A five-point agreement was reached between Jaishankar and Wang at a meeting in Moscow on September 10 on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave.

The pact included measures like quick disengagement of troops, avoiding action that could escalate tensions, adherence to all agreements and protocols on border management and steps to restore peace along the Line of Actual Control.

“Spoke to State Councilor & Foreign Minister Wang Yi this afternoon. Discussed the implementation of our Moscow Agreement and reviewed the status of disengagement,” Jaishankar said in a tweet on Thursday.

  • Terrorism remains greatest threat to mankind, asserts External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said terrorism remains one of the gravest threats to humankind and constitutes a severe challenge to the agenda of human rights.

“Terrorism continues to be one of the gravest threats to humankind. It is a crime against humanity and violates the most fundamental human right – namely, the right to life. As a long-standing victim, India has been in the forefront of the global action against terrorism,” he said in his address to the UN Human Rights Council.

This is the first time that an Indian foreign minister has addressed the Council. Calling for a coordinated global response to the challenges confronting human rights, Jaishankar said the situation was complicated by the pandemic and the need of the hour was for countries to come together against the challenges.

“This is possible only when there is a clear realisation, including in bodies dealing with human rights, that terrorism can never be justified, nor its perpetrators ever equated with its victims.”

India, he said, was committed to protecting human rights and it was reflected in the handling of the pandemic both at home and abroad.

“By giving direct food support to 800 million Indians and financial support to 400 million, many of them women, we ensured that basic needs were very effectively addressed even during the lockdown. And as we addressed the health front at home, we responded to the world in equal measure.”

The minister also highlighted India’s help to more than 150 countries through the supply of vaccines, saying New Delhi has pledged to use its manufacturing capacity to make vaccines affordable and accessible to all.

“From Bangladesh to Brazil and from Morocco to Fiji, the pharmacy of the world is today supplying millions of vaccine doses to more than 70 countries.”

  • In phone talks, EAM Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken review developments in Indo-Pacific

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday held a “comprehensive” conversation, focusing on developments in the Indo-Pacific as well as cooperation under the framework of the Quad.

The telephonic conversation between Jaishankar and Blinken came a day after US President Joe Biden spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time after the new American administration took charge.

In a tweet, Jaishankar said views on the situation in Myanmar were also exchanged.

Last week Myanmar’s military grabbed power in a coup against the civilian government.

“Welcomed the comprehensive discussion today with @SecBlinken. Reviewed Indo-Pacific developments and the Quad cooperation. Exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar. Look forward to remaining in touch,” he said.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Secretary Blinken had held their first telephonic talks on January 29 during which they resolved to consolidate and expand the India-US strategic partnership.

There have been growing global concerns among leading powers over China’s increasing military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both India and US have been expanding cooperation bilaterally as well as under the framework of Quad with an aim to ensure peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad comprises India, the US, Japan and Australia.

The issue figured in talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden.

“They reiterated the importance of working with like-minded countries to ensure a rules-based international order and a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region,” the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday night.

In a readout, the White House said Biden and Modi agreed to continuing close cooperation to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific, including support for freedom of navigation, territorial integrity, and a stronger regional architecture through the Quad.

Separately, Jaishankar held talks with National Security Adviser of Tajikistan Mahmudzoda Nasrullo Rahmatjon.

“Glad to receive Tajik NSA Mahmudzoda Nasrullo Rahmatjon. Useful exchange of views on the regional situation. Agreed on accelerate our ongoing bilateral cooperation,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  China on Friday said it had taken note of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s eight-point suggestion to repair the sore ties between the two nations while stating that the border issue should not be linked to the bilateral relationship.

“We have noted Minister Jaishankar’s remarks. He stressed the importance of India-China relations. It shows that the Indian side attaches importance to the ties with China, we appreciate this,” Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian said.

The spokesperson hoped that India would work with Beijing to properly manage differences and promote practical cooperation to bring India-China ties back on track.

“We stress that the boundary issue shall not be linked with the overall bilateral relations. That is an important experience we have gathered through many years’ effort to keep the ties moving forward,” Zhao said.

Jaishankar, in his keynote address at an event, had outlined an eight-point suggestion to take India-China relations forward.

He also stressed on three mutuals — interest, sensitivity and respect — needed to mend the ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The EAM had also come down heavily on China, saying the relations had been profoundly disturbed due to the events that took place last year.

He was referring to the violent face-off between Indian and Chinese troops on June 15  last year at the Galwan Valley along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers.

India and China have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks to resolve the face-off in eastern Ladakh, but no significant headway has been made so far.

    Jaishankar outlined eight broad principles

Jaishankar outlined eight broad principles and three “mutuals” to mend strained ties between India and China, and said the two countries are at crossroads and their choices will have profound repercussions, not just for them but for the entire world.
