  • AAP’s allegation of plot to kill Arvind Kejriwal in jail ‘completely false’: BJP

The BJP on Friday dismissed as “completely false” the Aam Aadmi Party’s allegation of a plot to kill Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in jail, and said the party should refrain from making such “sensational statements”. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, party spokesperson Shazia Ilmi said, “All of us wish for his long life. We would all like him to be in good health. More than us, the jail administration would like to ensure that their patients (inmates) are taken care of.” “Why would any government agency or jail administration want to be held responsible for his (deteriorating) health conditions and try to put his life in danger? Why would anybody do such things?” she asked. The BJP’s reaction came after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh on Friday reiterated his party’s allegation that a conspiracy was being hatched against Kejriwal and anything can happen to him in the prison. Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi had on Thursday alleged that there was a plot to kill Kejriwal, arrested by the ED in the Delhi excise policy case, by allegedly denying him home-cooked food and insulin in jail, a charge rejected by the prison authorities. The Aam Aadmi Party should refrain from making such sensational statements,” Ilmi told reporters when asked for the BJP’s reaction to the AAP leaders’ accusation. The BJP spokesperson also rejected Atishi’s allegation that Kejriwal was denied insulin in jail and said, “No jail in India would do this. We are a very responsible democracy.” “I don’t think it is possible to even deny insulin to a diabetic patient (lodged in jail), no matter if the person is a chief minister or somebody else,” she added.

  • One-year jail for eight Naga women over humiliating kangaroo court convict

    Express News Service
GUWAHATI:  A court in Nagaland has sentenced eight women to one year in jail for humiliating a woman after a judgment against her was passed by a kangaroo court in 2018. The Court of Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Tuensang also ordered a fine of Rs 3,000 against the eight, under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code. The victim was punished by a kangaroo court over violation of customary laws relating to extra-marital affairs.

Enraged that the victim had an extramarital affair, the eight women chopped off her hair and paraded her naked. The court observed that the villagers had taken the matter into their hands and meted out “inhumane” justice to her. “This is a case where the village folk asserting the so-called rights given unto them by the customary law, outraged the modesty of the victim in the most barbaric fashion,” the court said. The Nagas are governed by customary laws.

The state enjoys special provision under Article 371 A of the Constitution which says, “No Act of the Parliament in respect of religious or social practices of the Nagas and Naga customary law and procedure shall apply to Nagaland unless the state Assembly so decides by a resolution.”

However, the court observed that the law and order situation in the society would break down completely if all villages started invoking customary laws that “uncultured civilisations practiced”. According to the convicts, they were acting on the basis of a resolution adopted by their village to punish anyone found guilty of indulging in adultery.

  • SC upholds life imprisonment to man for killing minor children

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Tuesday upheld life imprisonment to a man for brutally killing two minors by administering them celphos, a pest control fumigant.

A bench of Justices Indu Malhotra and Ajay Rastogi noted that the accused was in a relationship with the mother of the two kids and had taken away the life of innocent children at the very threshold of their life.

“It is true that the punishment of remainder of natural life could not have been imposed by the learned trial Judge but after looking into the entire case, we consider it appropriate to confirm the sentence of imprisonment for life to mean the remainder of natural life while upholding the conviction under Section 302 IPC,” the bench said.

The top court dismissed the appeal filed by the Gauri Shankar who was found guilty of committing the murder of two minor children aged 4 and 2 in brutal manner by administering celphos to them.

After being convicted by trial Judge, and confirmed by the High Court on appeal, Gauri challenged the order in the apex court.

According to the prosecution, complainant Anju was married to Ajay Kumar and they had two children.

Kumar was an alcoholic and died.

Shankar was living in Anju’s neighbourhood and he allegedly enticed and brought her along with her two children to Punjab where the incident took place.

On March 18, 2013, Anju returned home from temple and saw both her children lying on the cot struggling for life.
