  • Former Australia coach John Buchanan explains how Virat Kohli’s absence will impact India

Former Australia coach John Buchanan recalled India’s historic Test series win in Australia, saying even though it was Cheteshwar Pujara, who emerged the highest run-scorer for India in the series, captain Virat Kohli’s contributions were equally significant. During India’s famous 2-1 series win in Australia in 2018-19, Pujara had starred with 521 runs in four Tests, including three centuries, while Kohli totalled 282 runs.

Even though that kind of performance was no where close to the one Kohli had in 2014/15 – where he’d scored 692 runs, Buchanan reckons Kohli was a monumental figure in the series and the India captain’s absence will have an impact on India’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“He (Kohli) has done an incredibly good job – irrespective of whether he is scoring runs or not. If we go back to 2019, (Cheteshwar) Pujara was the star of the series and Kohli made some contributions, so did (Ajinkya) Rahane. But Kohli’s real contribution is his leadership and captaincy and the way he instills greatness – not only to win games, but also in finding a way to beat teams,” Buchanan told Sportstar.

During the last week of the IPL, Kohli had touched upon the Australian tour and underlined how the bio-bubble duration should also be counted in the overall duration of the tour. Being in bio-bubbles tends to have an effect – a sort of mental wear down on players – something Kohli had touched upon, and highlighting the same, Buchanan reckons that is where India will miss Kohli the most.

  • Suryakumar Yadav commented on Virat Kohli’s tweet, Solzing was done during IPL

Virat Kohli used a negative strategy against Suryakumar Yadav in a high-voltage match between RCB and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020. Virat would often come close to Suryakumar and start staring at him. But Suryakumar did not lose his cool and he continued to ignore the RCB captain.

As soon as he won the match, Suryakumar looked at Kohli and asked him, “Is everything okay?” The fans of Surya liked it a lot, the reason is that they responded to the negative attack in a positive way.

Suryakumar was not included in any of the formats despite his impressive performance when the team of ODIs, Tests and T20s were selected on the tour of Australia. However, Team India coach Ravi Shastri, while praising this opener of Mumbai Indians, advised to be patient.

On social media, cricket fans blamed Virat Kohli for not being selected by Suryakumar. Akash Chopra also praised Suryakumar before the selection and said that he will definitely be seen in Team India’s jersey in future.

  • Krunal Pandya luxury watches case investigated further by Customs at Mumbai airport

Airport Customs will continue investigating the case related to India cricketer Krunal Pandya, who was detained at the Mumbai airport over suspicion of being in possession of undisclosed gold and valuables upon his arrival in the country from the UAE.

The case will further be investigated by Mumbai Airport Customs. Krunal Pandya was detained on Thursday by officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at the Mumbai airport after four luxury watches were found in his baggage. It came to light the all-rounder had not declared the watches to the Customs while arriving from the UAE after the competition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

DRI officials found that the four luxury watches, which were of Omega and Ambular Piguet, were not declared by Pandya to Customs and no duty had been paid for the same. The watches were suspected to be worth below Rs 1 crore in value.

According to sources, Krunal Pandya was detained and questioned by DRI officials from 5:30 pm. The Mumbai Indians star reportedly said that he had no idea about the declaration procedure and Customs duty and so he had failed to declare the watches to Customs.

The watches were seized and handed over to Mumbai airport customs for its valuation and Krunal was allowed to leave the airport around midnight. Once the valuation of the watches is done, Krunal will have to pay around 38 percent of its value as Customs duty and the adjudicating authority would further decide on the amount of penalty to be levied against Krunal.
