  • Arjuna Ranatunga urges Sri Lankan players to leave IPL and stand in support of their country

    By ANI

COLOMBO: Former cricketer and minister Arjuna Ranatunga on Tuesday urged all the Sri Lankan players, who are playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), to come and stand in support of their country during the ongoing economic crisis.

Sri Lanka is battling a severe economic crisis with food and fuel scarcity affecting a large number of the people in the island nation. The economy has been in a free-fall since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I really don’t know but there are some cricketers who are lavishly playing in the IPL and haven’t spoken about their country. Unfortunately, people are scared to speak against the government. These cricketers are also working for the cricket board under the ministry and they are trying to protect their jobs. But now they have to take a step as some of the young cricketers also came forward and gave statements in support of the protest,” Arjuna Ranatunga told ANI.

“When something is going wrong, you should have the guts to come out and speak against it, without thinking about your business. People ask me why I am not in the protests. It’s just that I have been into politics for the last 19 years and this is not a political issue. So far, none of the political parties and politicians have got into the protests and that’s the biggest strength of the people of this country,” he added.

Earlier, Sri Lankan players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Bhanuka Rajapaksa came in support of the ongoing protests against the economic crisis.

“I am sure you all know who are the players, playing in the IPL. I don’t want to mention but I would want them to leave their job for a week and come in support of the protests,” said the former cricketer.

The economy has been in a free-fall since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting tourism.

Sri Lanka is also facing a foreign exchange shortage, which has affected its capacity to import food and fuel. The shortage of essential goods forced Sri Lanka to seek assistance from friendly countries.

The economic situation has led to huge protests with demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Earlier, in a special address to the nation on Monday, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa requested people to remain patient and stop taking to the streets in order to enable the government to resolve the situation.

  • More all-rounders you have, better it is for any team in T20s: Delhi Capitals pacer Shardul Thakur

    By PTI

MUMBAI: When it comes to all-rounders, more the merrier, feels Delhi Capitals’ Shardul Thakur, who feels that multi-skilled cricketers become key when specialists fail in one department.

The Capitals have all-rounders in abundance including the likes of Mitchell Marsh, Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Mandeep Singh and Thakur himself.

“We have great depth in our batting. The more all-rounders are there, the better it is for any team in T20s.

“If we lose quick wickets at the top, then the role of the players batting at 6,7 & 8 becomes important,” Thakur was quoted as saying in a DC media release.

Thakur, who has made vital contributions with ball and bat in the ongoing IPL so far, said he aims to make an impact in every match.

“The environment within the team is quite good. There are a lot of youngsters in the team and we are all friends as we’ve been playing together for some time. I like to make an impact in every match I play and that’s why I play with a lot of energy,” Thakur said.

The Capitals are currently placed sixth in the league table having won two of their four matches.

“The team is moving in the right direction and our Head Coach Ricky Ponting has always told us to play our natural game no matter what the situation is. He backs us so we always try to give our best.”

The seam bowling all-rounder, who has represented India in 25 T20Is, has impressed everyone with the ball and the bat.

“I look to enjoy playing cricket. I have worked hard to reach this stage so I don’t want to put myself under any kind of pressure. Even when the crowd cheers for our opponents in the stadium, I look to enjoy those situations.”

  • Get back to basics, look yourself in the mirror to find winning ways: Michael Hussey to CSK players

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has asked his players to go back to the basics to find the winning formula in this edition of the Indian Premier League.

CSK, under new skipper Ravindra Jadeja, have lost all four matches so far in the tournament this year, and take on an in-form Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ‘Southern Derby’ at DY Patil Stadium here later on Tuesday.

The Australian added that every player in the side would have, by now, done some introspection to find the cause for individual disappointments.

“Without doubt, I am still really confident with the team, and the guys are working hard. I don’t think we are too far away hopefully (from the win), and as you say we can get hopefully one win on the board, then hopefully things can sort of grow from there,” Hussey told CSK TV on Tuesday.

“But I think we have just got to bring it right back to the basics you know, we cannot get too worried about what happened in the past and we cannot get worried about winning two or three games in a row in the future. We have just got to bring it down to playing this next game against RCB, focusing on our jobs, our individual skills, playing each ball like it is a contest, and win one contest after the next, and I am sure if we can do that, then if we can win more contests than RCB, then hopefully we can get a win on the board and hopefully get things going a little bit.

“I think the guys individually would have all gone away and had a good look at themselves in the mirror and just maybe identified one or two things that they can probably do a little bit better and hopefully they can bring that to the table and if everyone brings a little bit better, then hopefully the collective will improve and as you say, we can get that first win on the board.”

The former Australian batter, who was a CSK player before becoming batting coach of the side, praised left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, saying the Super Kings like what he brings to the table.

“You have got to remember, he (Mukesh Chowdhury) is still a young guy, he is playing his first couple of games in the IPL, it is a big, big deal for a young inexperienced player. So, we just try and support him as much as we possibly can, you see his confidence growing, each game that he plays. So, I am really confident that there is a really big performance from him just around the corner, and yeah I just love watching him grow and improve with each game. So, yeah really like what he is bringing to the table.”

  • Hardik Pandya roasted on social media for screaming at senior pro Mohammed Shami

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Hardik Pandya’s outburst at team-mate and senior India bowler Mohammed Shami, after the latter did not go all out to take a catch in Monday night’s game against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), has not gone down well with the all-rounder’s fans.

At the DY Patil stadium on Monday, a measured half-century from captain Kane Williamson, after their bowlers had applied the brakes in the last five overs, sealed SRH’s eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans.

Dear Hardik, you are a terrible captain. Stop taking it out on your teammates, particularly someone as senior as Shami. #IPL #IPL2022 #GTvsSRH pic.twitter.com/9yoLpslco7

After the bowlers had conceded 44 runs and taken three wickets in the last five overs to restrict Gujarat to 162/7, Williamson led the chase with patience and precision while making 57 off 46 balls, laced with two fours and four sixes. He found support from Abhishek Sharma (42) and Nicholas Pooran doing the finishing job with an unbeaten 34.

It was in the 13th over being bowled by Pandya that the Titans skipper shouted at Shami after the latter apparently did not go all out to take a catch offered by Rahul Tripathi. Before that, SRH skipper Kane Williamson had hit Pandya for back-to-back maximums off the second and third ball of the over.

The Titans had an opportunity to dismiss the New Zealander’s partner Tripathi off the last ball of the over when the 31-year-old batter’s upper cut went horribly wrong and flew towards deep third man.

@hardikpandya7 shouting at the #mohammedshami is disgraceful what Shami has done for #Indianteam is commendable and #Hardik has not even done half of it. #shameful #HardikPandya

Shami, posted in the deep, could have latched on to the catch had he moved forward. Instead, the veteran India pacer moved back a couple of steps and collected the ball on first bounce. Already clobbered for two sixes by Williamson in the over, Pandya vent his anger at Shami.

  • Back injury rules CSK all-rounder Deepak Chahar out of IPL

    By PTI

MUMBAI: A back injury to Deepak Chahar has all but put paid to the pace bowling all-rounder’s hopes of playing in the ongoing IPL-15, adding to the woes of Chennai Super Kings’ faltering campaign.

Having entered the tournament without Chahar, their strike bowler, the defending champions have lost all their four matches so far in the 10-team competition and are placed at the bottom of the points table.

While CSK have always claimed that their Rs 14 crore buy would be fit before the second week of April, the seriousness of the tear was such that there was “no chance of his availability” in the tournament.

According to sources, the India and CSK bowler suffered the back injury during his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Chahar has been at the NCA for more than a month now, recovering from the quadricep tear he picked during India’s T20I series against West Indies in February.

Initially it was believed that Chahar would miss a major part of the IPL, but his quick recovery kept CSK optimistic of a late April return.

The bowling all-rounder had suffered a quadriceps injury during the third T20I against West Indies in February, walking off the field after failing to complete his spell.

The 29-year-old, who was bought for Rs 14 crore in the mega auction, went on to miss the ensuing series against Sri Lanka.

Chahar, who is also adept at playing the big shots, played a key role in the team’s success last year.
