A crucial phone discussion took place on March 20 between China’s top diplomat Wang Yi and Emmanuel Bonne, advisor on foreign affairs to French President Emmanuel Macron. Wang, from the CPC Central Committee’s Politburo and heading the Central Foreign Affairs Office, delved deeply into the Middle East’s precarious state with his French counterpart.

The conversation revealed shared alarms about intensifying regional strife, risks of wider warfare, and profound worldwide repercussions. Leaders agreed that unified global action is essential to contain the unrest.

Bonne articulated France’s views on the unrest engulfing Iran and Lebanon, stressing common ground with China in supporting UN mechanisms, respecting global norms, and prioritizing talks over confrontation. He urged both nations to chart concrete paths for tension relief and dialogue resumption in these trying times.

France stands ready to deepen ties with China, enhancing exchanges to accelerate regional peace and steadiness.

Responding, Wang Yi painted a grim picture of the Middle East’s downward spiral, with broadening conflicts jeopardizing energy security and unleashing humanitarian disasters. He reminded that as UNSC permanent members, China and France must amplify their strategic coordination, steadfastly defend international legal frameworks, and collectively safeguard against chaotic global governance.

This exchange underscores a pivotal moment in Sino-French relations, potentially influencing future UN resolutions and bilateral strategies on international security. Observers watch closely as these powers align against escalating threats.

A coalition of 22 nations has delivered a stern warning to Iran, demanding adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2817 following attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The joint statement, first published on March 19 and amplified via the UAE’s Foreign Ministry on X over the weekend, unites heavyweights like the UAE, UK, France, Germany, and Japan in a call for de-escalation.

Signatories including the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia, Bahrain, and multiple EU members decry Iran’s pattern of aggression: assaults on merchant vessels, strikes against energy infrastructure, and threats to seal off the strategic chokepoint. ‘These actions undermine the basic right to freedom of passage under international maritime law,’ the document asserts.

The leaders explicitly call for an end to provocative tactics such as deploying mines, launching drones and missiles, and any efforts to impede safe passage through the strait. They frame these incidents as direct threats to international peace, invoking Resolution 2817’s provisions against disruptions to vital shipping lanes and energy flows.

In a proactive move, the group applauds the IEA’s coordinated strategic reserve release to ease market pressures. They commit to additional measures, like ramping up production with partner countries, to safeguard energy supplies amid the crisis.

This broad diplomatic front underscores growing alarm over Iran’s destabilizing behavior in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors. As tensions simmer, the message is unequivocal: respect for global norms is non-negotiable to avert broader fallout on economies worldwide.

In a clear signal to international partners, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath declared on March 7 in New Delhi that his country will deal with the rescued Iranian sailors solely under the framework of international law. The statement addresses the dramatic sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a US submarine and the subsequent rescue operation.

Reports had swirled about US pressure on Colombo to prevent the sailors’ return, but Herath dismissed such notions during a conference. He detailed how Sri Lanka is managing the 32 crew members from the IRIS Dena, which was torpedoed off the southern coast on Wednesday. Sri Lankan naval forces acted decisively, saving the lives adrift in hostile waters.

‘Colombo honors all international treaty obligations in caring for these sailors,’ Herath asserted. Responding to queries on external pressures, he added, ‘Every step we take complies fully with global legal standards.’

Flashback to March 4: The IRIS Dena, fresh from naval drills with India and carrying about 130 personnel, was hit in international waters without prior alert. Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi lambasted the strike on X as US savagery, predicting repercussions for America.

Sri Lanka didn’t stop there. Following the Dena tragedy, the nation sheltered the IRIS Bushehr after it signaled mechanical issues. Its 219 crew were safely brought to Trincomalee port, showcasing Colombo’s humanitarian efficiency.

As diplomatic ripples spread, Herath’s words reinforce Sri Lanka’s principled navigation through superpower frictions. The nation positions itself as a responsible actor, prioritizing law over politics in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes.

Beijing’s diplomatic outreach took center stage in Geneva on February 27, with the launch of the ‘Group of Friends of Global Governance’ at the iconic Palais des Nations. Organized by China’s Permanent Mission to UN bodies in Switzerland, the first meeting attracted delegates from around 60 nations, encompassing the group’s 42 founding members.

Permanent Representative Fu Cong delivered a keynote speech that underscored the precarious state of global affairs. ‘Complexity and change define our era, intensifying challenges that no single country can solve alone,’ he noted.

Drawing from China’s global governance initiative, Fu detailed five foundational concepts: sovereign equality among nations, strict observance of international law, bolstering multilateral institutions, human-centric policies, and results-driven pragmatism. These pillars, he argued, form the bedrock for meaningful progress.

Fu pledged China’s readiness to engage all stakeholders via this new group, fostering discussions on governance improvements and contributing to a more equitable world order. ‘Together, we can construct a system that truly reflects global diversity,’ he said.

Attendees from diverse regions voiced strong support, advocating for enhanced synergy and collective accountability. The meeting buzzed with ideas on addressing everything from pandemics to trade disputes through inclusive frameworks.

Against a backdrop of strained U.S.-China relations and shifting alliances, this group emerges as a counterweight to Western-dominated institutions. It aims to promote reforms that give greater weight to developing economies in global policymaking.

Looking ahead, the platform promises regular convenings to translate rhetoric into action. If it gains momentum, it could influence key UN agendas, marking a shift towards multipolar governance.

European Council chief Antonio Costa declared on Tuesday that India and the European Union share a profound duty to safeguard international law with the UN Charter at its core. This statement came during a high-level joint briefing in New Delhi after talks with PM Narendra Modi and Ursula von der Leyen.

Positioning both entities as pillars of democracy and multilateralism, Costa stressed their collective role in maintaining global order. The morning’s tribute to Mahatma Gandhi set a reflective tone, with Costa quoting the father of the nation on true peace arising from principled non-violence amid turmoil.

Revealing his Indian ancestry, Costa noted, ‘My family’s origins in Goa make this partnership personal. As an OCI cardholder and European leader, I cherish these connections.’

Key outcomes included renewed pledges for Ukraine’s just peace process, honoring its independence fully. Costa praised Modi’s potential in diplomacy: ‘This is a defining moment. With Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate hard terms, we rely on your leadership for dialogue-driven solutions.’

Thanking Modi for Republic Day honors, Costa called the parade a testament to India’s vibrancy. The summit launches enhanced cooperation in commerce, defense, and connectivity, signaling a strategic pivot.

Amid rising multipolarity, the duo aims to grow mutual prosperity, linking it inextricably to security. Joint efforts target Indo-Pacific and global threats, forging unprecedented trust. The inaugural defense-security pact sets ambitious precedents for future alliances, reshaping bilateral dynamics.

Former White House heavyweight John Bolton has slammed the idea that China could use America’s Venezuela intervention as a green light for Taiwan. In an IANS interview from India’s capital, Bolton unpacked President Trump’s bold moves—from sanctioning Maduro to tariff warnings for India—and why they don’t set a precedent for Beijing.

Trump’s crackdown followed Maduro’s disputed 2024 victory, echoing historical US actions like ousting Panama’s Noriega at the behest of elected leader Guillermo Endara. Opposition stalwart Maria Corina Machado’s Nobel bid highlighted the illegitimacy. Bolton argued such cases justify intervention when dictators threaten stability.

Yet, he stressed, this doesn’t apply universally. ‘You can’t validate claims with facts alone,’ Bolton said. Russia’s Ukraine assault was unprovoked aggression, not comparable. Similarly, China’s threats against Taiwan—a beacon of democracy with self-identified citizens rejecting Beijing’s rule—lack any legitimate basis.

‘Taiwanese have voted repeatedly in free elections; they want no part of the mainland,’ Bolton asserted, citing polls. He labeled China’s saber-rattling the true peril to world order. On US-India frictions over Russian oil tariffs, Bolton lamented the rush to punish allies, advocating renewed partnership against shared China worries.

Trump’s Greenland purchase quip? ‘Pure bargaining theater,’ Bolton chuckled. ‘He startles to snag 30% of his ask. Military force there? Unthinkable—it’d shatter NATO.’

Bolton’s analysis arrives amid fraught geopolitics, reminding leaders that context matters in justifying force. As Trump eyes tariffs and territories, the ex-NSA urges focus on real threats like China’s expansionism, not misguided copycats.

India has strongly condemned China’s actions after an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh was detained during a transit in Shanghai. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India, and China’s assertions to the contrary are baseless. The MEA emphasized that China has failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the detention of Prema Wangjom Thongdok, a UK resident, who alleged her Indian passport was deemed ‘invalid’ due to her birthplace being listed as Arunachal Pradesh. This incident, occurring during a 24-hour visa-free transit, is seen as a violation of international air travel conventions and China’s own regulations. India has lodged a strong protest with Beijing over the matter.

Iran, known for its high rate of executions, has recently intensified its legal measures against Afghan immigrants. Following the conflict with Israel, the Iranian government has repatriated a significant number of Afghans. According to Hengaw, an Iranian human rights organization, approximately ten Afghan citizens were executed in Iran during September. The report indicates that Iran executed at least 187 people in September, a startling figure representing a 140% increase in executions compared to the previous year. In September of the prior year, 78 prisoners were executed, making this year’s number the highest in two decades. Hengaw previously reported that around a thousand people were executed in Iran over the last nine months, including 65 Afghan nationals. This data suggests that the Iranian government may be unfairly targeting Afghans or viewing them with suspicion, preventing them from proving their innocence. Some reports suggest that Afghan immigrants in Iran are viewed with suspicion and are perceived as opponents of the Shia government, possibly due to the Sunni majority in Afghanistan and the Taliban’s image as a hardline Sunni regime. Legal expert Rohullah Sakhizada stated that such sentencing by courts without considering fundamental rights violates both international law and the Iranian legal framework. Furthermore, it is believed that defendants in Iran are not provided with legal counsel to prove their innocence, and courts are issuing sentences accordingly.

Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has urged wealthy nations to establish a system to prevent the theft of funds from impoverished countries and facilitate their return. He emphasized the current financial system’s failure to curb the outflow of money from developing nations. Yunus made these remarks at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Yunus stated at the UNGA that numerous developed countries and financial institutions aid in concealing money stolen from poor nations. He appealed to all such countries to return the stolen funds, emphasizing that the money belongs to farmers, laborers, and ordinary citizens. Over the past 15 years, billions of dollars have been siphoned off through corruption.

Yunus highlighted that recovering this money is a top priority for the government, but it is challenging without the cooperation of other nations. He noted that the public movement in August 2024 marked a new beginning for democracy. The commitment to reforms will continue regardless of who wins the upcoming elections. Elections in Bangladesh are scheduled to be held by February of the following year.

He also addressed the Rohingya crisis, stating that his government is strengthening labor rights and enacting laws related to forcibly disappeared persons. He also appealed for the safety of migrant workers. Regarding the Rohingya crisis, Yunus warned that the violence in Myanmar threatens the entire region. He demanded equal rights for the Rohingya and called for international pressure on Myanmar.

Yunus expressed sorrow over the deaths in Gaza, describing the deaths of children and the destruction of hospitals as a living genocide. He demanded a two-state solution that includes an independent Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a recent development, two prominent Muslim nations, Egypt and Qatar, have voiced strong disapproval of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks concerning the potential displacement of Palestinians, including through the Rafah crossing into Egypt. Qatar issued a statement denouncing Netanyahu’s words as further evidence of Israel’s disregard for Palestinian rights and international law.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) released a statement on Friday, characterizing the comments as a continuation of Israel’s actions violating Palestinian rights, ignoring international laws, and hindering peace efforts, particularly those aimed at a two-state solution.

During an interview with the Israeli Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, Netanyahu discussed potential plans for rebuilding Gaza. He also asserted that a significant portion of the population wishes to leave Gaza, though he denied this constituted mass expulsion. Netanyahu indicated that opening the Rafah crossing was possible but would likely be closed immediately by Egypt.

Qatar’s MoFA suggested that Netanyahu’s words reflected Israel’s broader intentions to seize Palestinian land, warning of potential harm to regional peace and stability. The statement also reiterated Qatar’s stance that Israel’s policy of collective punishment against Palestinians, especially its military actions in Gaza, constitutes a continuation of ongoing crimes.

The statement concluded that the policy of collective punishment, including the current war in Gaza, actions in the West Bank, violations of religious sites, settlement expansion plans, and restrictions on humanitarian aid, would not succeed in forcing Palestinians to leave their land or in confiscating their legitimate rights.

Egypt also strongly opposed the statements, declaring its categorical opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians. The Egyptian ministry stated that such actions would violate international humanitarian law and could be considered war crimes, emphasizing that Egypt would not participate in such actions and deemed the matter a ‘red line’.
