The shadow of Middle East unrest looms large over India’s skies, with Kolkata’s main international hub canceling multiple flights on Friday. Sparked by Iran-Israel-US hostilities, the suspensions highlight aviation’s vulnerability to regional flashpoints.

Between late evening March 6 and morning March 7, 2026, operations to key Gulf destinations halted. Airlines cited safety protocols, prioritizing lives over schedules in a volatile airspace.

Key impacts: Air Arabia’s Kolkata-Abu Dhabi service (3L-0167) scrapped. Etihad’s bidirectional Abu Dhabi flights (EY-0220 and EY-0221) followed suit. Qatar Airways pulled QR-0540 from Doha and QR-0541 to Doha. Emirates nixed EK-0571 to Dubai and EK-0570 inbound, making seven flights in total.

Airport advisories stress checking flight apps or calling carriers, especially for Middle East-bound itineraries. This isn’t just a Kolkata issue—similar ripples are felt nationwide, as carriers reroute and refund amid diplomatic deadlock.

Passengers shared frustration online, with stranded plans unraveling family reunions and business deals. Analysts predict extended halts if tensions don’t ease, urging flexibility in travel amid global interconnected risks.

Air passengers are set to enjoy unprecedented flexibility following the DGCA’s latest regulatory overhaul. The key highlight is a 48-hour window post-booking where cancellations or modifications come absolutely free.

According to the official statement, ‘Passengers may cancel or amend their tickets without charges within 48 hours of booking.’ Fare differences apply only if changing flights.

Eligibility is tied to booking timelines: domestic flights need seven days prior to departure, international ones 15 days. Post-window, conventional fees kick in.

The amendments, notified on February 24, activate on March 26, 2026. DGCA has also tightened rules on name fixes and refunds for smoother experiences.

Direct website purchases allow free name changes within 24 hours. For agent-booked tickets, airlines must handle refunds promptly within 14 business days.

New deadlines include seven days for credit card refunds and instant cash returns at counters. Taxes and fees remain refundable regardless of fare policy.

This policy shift addresses long-standing grievances, making air travel more passenger-friendly. Industry experts predict it will reduce booking hesitancy and encourage spontaneous travel plans.

As airlines gear up for implementation, flyers should familiarize themselves with these rights to maximize benefits. The aviation landscape in India is evolving towards greater transparency and accountability.

Rajya Sabha witnessed a compelling pitch Tuesday for expanding Chandigarh International Airport’s global reach. Representing shared interests of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, MP Satnam Singh Sandhu demanded new direct flights to London, Singapore, and Vancouver, aiming to unlock the facility’s vast untapped capacity.

The airport, designed for 7 million passengers annually, currently serves only half that number, with international operations limited to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Sandhu painted a vivid picture of the opportunities: seamless travel for diaspora communities, business travelers, and tourists from the tri-state region.

By designating Chandigarh as a Point of Call, airlines worldwide could base operations there, he proposed. This would diversify routes and stimulate local economies. On the cargo front, increasing flights would supercharge Punjab’s farm exports, delivering real gains to rural producers and small businesses.

Sandhu lauded India’s aviation renaissance over the past decade, crediting visionary leadership for tripling airport numbers. Punjab’s infrastructure has strengthened with international gateways in Chandigarh and Amritsar, complemented by domestic hubs. Special mention went to PM Modi’s recent Punjab visit, where he honored Guru Ravidas by renaming Adampur Airport and gifting Halwara to the state.

Yet, Sandhu urged for more. “Grateful as we are, our people seek enhanced connectivity to match national progress,” he asserted. This call to action highlights how targeted investments in regional airports can bridge urban-rural divides and fuel inclusive growth across northern India.

Operations at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) came to a standstill today as a technical glitch affected the runway lighting system. Airport officials confirmed that all flight movements, both domestic and international, were suspended from 5:30 PM local time. This unexpected disruption has led to significant delays and cancellations for hundreds of passengers.

Following an aviation incident in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on June 12th, Air India faced a series of inspections. Consequently, the airline canceled several international flights last month. However, the airline is now preparing to reinstate all previously suspended international routes.

CEO of Air India, Campbell Wilson, revealed that some international flights have already resumed operations starting August 1st, with a target of having all flights operational by October 1st. The cancellations were a direct result of the incident in Ahmedabad.

During a recent audit conducted by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), over 100 discrepancies were identified in some of Air India’s flights. DGCA officials promptly ordered the rectification of these shortcomings.

According to CEO Campbell Wilson, the flights that were canceled will be reinstated by October 1st. Some of the grounded flights have already begun to resume service since August 1st, with a phased approach planned for the remaining routes.

After the Ahmedabad incident, multiple Air India flights experienced a range of issues simultaneously. These included emergency landings and reports of technical malfunctions. Within a week of the incident, over 80 flights were canceled. The DGCA initiated inspections of all Air India aircraft, which have now largely been completed.

On June 12th, Air India flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after takeoff. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of 297 lives. Out of the 242 passengers on board, 241 perished in the accident.

Air India has initiated a gradual reinstatement of its international flight operations after a “Safety Pause” prompted by the tragic incident involving flight AI171 on June 12. The airline had previously suspended or reduced services across multiple routes to conduct thorough inspections of its Boeing 787 aircraft and to adjust to altered flight paths due to regional airspace closures. Partial services will recommence from August 1, with a full return to normal operations anticipated by October 1. Several key routes will see restored services or increased frequencies. Significant changes include the full restoration of 24 weekly flights on the Delhi-London (Heathrow) route, effective July 16. The Delhi-Zurich route will increase from 4 to 5 flights per week starting August 1. Full weekly frequencies will be reinstated on the Delhi-Tokyo (Haneda) and Delhi-Seoul (Incheon) routes by August and September, respectively. The Delhi-Amsterdam route will return to 7 flights per week from August 1. A new route between Ahmedabad and London (Heathrow) will operate three times weekly, replacing the current five-times-weekly Gatwick service. Additionally, Delhi-Nairobi services will operate three times a week until August 31, followed by a temporary suspension from September 1 to September 30. Over 15 routes will continue operating at reduced frequencies until the end of September, including flights between Bengaluru-London (Heathrow), Delhi-Paris, Delhi-Milan, Delhi-Copenhagen, Delhi-Vienna, and Amritsar-Birmingham. North American destinations, such as Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, and New York (JFK and Newark), will also maintain reduced frequencies. The flights between Delhi-Melbourne and Delhi-Sydney continue at 5x weekly. Four international routes will remain suspended until September 30, encompassing flights between Amritsar-London (Gatwick), Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick), Bengaluru-Singapore, and Pune-Singapore. Air India is contacting affected passengers to offer rebooking options or full refunds.

Air India has announced the cancellation of eight flights, affecting both international and domestic routes, due to necessary maintenance and operational adjustments. The airline previously stated a temporary reduction in services using Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, effective from June 21, 2025, until at least July 15, 2025. The cancelled international flights include AI906 (Dubai to Chennai), AI2204 (Dubai to Hyderabad), AI308 (Delhi to Melbourne), and AI309 (Melbourne to Delhi). Domestic flights affected are AI874 (Pune to Delhi), AI456 (Ahmedabad to Delhi), AI2872 (Hyderabad to Mumbai), and AI571 (Chennai to Mumbai). The airline cited enhanced pre-flight safety checks and additional flight durations due to airspace closures in the Middle East as contributing factors. Air India aims to restore schedule stability and minimize passenger inconvenience. Further, several routes will have reduced flight frequencies until July 15, 2025.
