  • ‘Time for all to work towards ensuring change of govt in 2024’, says Pawar at Opposition leaders rally

    By PTI

FATEHABAD: As several opposition leaders came together on one stage here, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the time has come for everyone to work towards ensuring a change of the government at the Centre in 2024.

Referring to the stir against the agri laws, he said farmers committing suicide is not a solution and that the real solution would be to bring about the change in government.

Farmers staged protests on the borders of the national capital, but the central government did not heed to their demands for a very long time, Pawar said here at a mega rally organised by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

The rally organised by INLD was also attended by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Shiromani Akali Dal’s Sukhbir Singh Badal among others.

Pawar said farmers and youths committing suicide is not a solution, but the real solution is to bring about a change and everyone must strive for a change of the government at the Centre in 2024.

He said the central government had promised to withdraw cases filed against farmer leaders, but it has not fulfilled it as yet.

At the same rally, Nitish Kumar also called for uniting all non-BJP parties, including the Congress and the Left, to take on the BJP and said this “main front of opposition” will ensure that the saffron party loses badly in the 2024 general elections. Kumar also said he was not a prime ministerial candidate.

“There is no question of a Third Front. There should be one front including Congress, then we can defeat BJP in 2024,” he added.

Bihar’s deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav said the BJP earlier used to sing ‘menhgayi daayan maar gayi’ (price rise is killing every one), but now ‘menhgayi’ has become its ‘bhoujayi’ (sister-in-law).

  • Opposition’s show of strength: INLD’s September 25 rally aims to bring Nitish, Tejashwi, Pawar on one stage

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: To display Opposition unity, the INLD has invited Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav and Farooq Abdullah for its September 25 rally which will also be attended by Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav, party leader Abhay Chautala said Tuesday.

The INLD national general secretary said the former prime minister and JD(S) leader H D Deve Gowda, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal and Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik have also been invited to the rally.

An invitation will also be sent to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chautala told PTI.

He said, “During a meeting with Nitish Kumar ji, INLD supremo O P Chautala invited him to the September 25 rally in Fatehabad, and he agreed to attend the meeting.”

When contacted, JD(U) leader K C Tyagi confirmed that Kumar will attend the rally along with Tejashwi Yadav.

“To mark the birthday of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, various opposition leaders will come together on one stage and it would be an appropriate occasion to discuss various issues,” Tyagi told PTI.

O P Chautala claimed that people are fed up with the BJP and “an atmosphere against the ruling party at the Centre is building in the country”.

“The September 25 rally will not only showcase opposition unity but also anger against the BJP government,” he said, adding all socialist and erstwhile Janata Dal leaders should come on one stage.

The INLD has been organising public rallies on the birthday of its founder Devi Lal and has been inviting various leaders from opposition parties, other than the Congress.

  • Bypoll roundup: BJP consolidates in Assam, MP; Congress wrests seats from it in four states; TMC reigns in Bengal

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The BJP and its allies on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, won 11 assembly seats while the Congress bagged eight out of 29 seats in the latest round of bypolls, with results mostly favouring ruling parties in the states except in Himachal Pradesh, where the BJP lost all three assembly seats and the prestigious Mandi Lok Sabha constituency to the Congress, and Telangana.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress got a ringing endorsement from the electors as it won all the four assembly seats, including two that it snatched from the BJP, with a staggering 75.02 per cent vote share.

The results from the 13 states were a mixed bag for the BJP and the Congress, which gained in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka, wresting seats from the saffron party, but suffered losses in Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya.

The sympathy factor appeared to have worked for the parties as Congress’ Pratibha Singh, wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh who died in July, won in Mandi Lok Sabha seat while Shiv Sena candidate Kalaben Delkar, wife of former independent MP Mohan Delkar whose death necessitated the by-election, bagged in Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha seat.

Similarly, the kin of deceased MLAs fielded by the Congress in Maharashtra, the JD(U) in Bihar and YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh also won.

The ruling BJP retained Khandwa Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh and wrested Jobat (SC) and Prithvipur assembly seats from the Congress but ceded Raigaon (SC) constituency to the opposition party.

The party also consolidated its position in Assam as its alliance won all five Assembly constituencies with the saffron party bagging three seats and its ally United Peoples’ Party Liberal (UPPL) emerging victorious in the two.

It gained a seat in Telangana with the victory of former state minister Eatala Rajender who switched from the ruling TRS, while its ally JD(U) retained two sets in Bihar.

In Rajasthan, where Congress retained one seat and snatched one from the BJP, the saffron party candidates not only lost the by-election but stood third and fourth in Dhariawad and Vallabhnagar constituencies respectively.

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Singh Chautala, who quit the assembly in protests against the Centre’s new agri laws, was re-elected from Haryana’s Ellenabad Assembly bypolls.

Former national footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh won from Mawphlang constituency in Meghalaya.

In Karnataka, the BJP wrested Sindgi assembly segment from the JD (S), but lost Hangal constituency to the Congress, seen as a jolt to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai as the seat neighbours his Shiggaon assembly segment in Haveri district and he had extensively campaigned there.

This was also the first major electoral challenge for Bommai, after taking charge as CM.

However, it was Himachal Pradesh where the ruling BJP suffered a major setback as it lost the Mandi seat, the home district of chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, to the Congress which also wrested one assembly seat and retained two others.

Assembly elections in the state are due in December next year.

The Congress cited the bypoll results to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to shed arrogance, repeal the three farm laws and stop petrol and diesel “loot”.

“Every victory for the Congress is a victory of our party worker. Keep fighting hate. No fear!” Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter.

The final tally in the bypolls is: BJP – seven, its allies JD(U)-two, UPPL – two; Congress – eight, TMC – four, YSRC – one; INLD – one; MNF – one; NPP- two, UPP – one Five of these 29 seats were in Assam, four in West Bengal, three each in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, two each in Bihar, Karnataka and Rajasthan and one seat each is in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Mizoram and Telangana.

The BJP had earlier won in around half a dozen of these constituencies earlier, the Congress had nine, while the rest were with regional parties.

Voting was held on October 30 for the bypolls, seen as a barometer of the political mood in the country ahead of the next round of assembly elections in five states, including politically critical Uttar Pradesh.

ASSAM: The BJP’s Phani Talukdar, Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain retained their respective Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra seats which they had won in the assembly elections held earlier this year on tickets given by other parties.

Kurmi retained the Mariani assembly constituency for the sixth time defeating Congress candidate Luhit Konwar by 40,104 votes while Talukdar won the Bhabanipur seat for the second time beating Sailendra Das of the grand old party by 25,641 votes.

The BJP’s ally UPPL wrested the Gossaigaon constituency with its candidate Jiron Basumatary defeating Congress nominee Jowel Tudu by a margin of 28,252 votes while another party candidate Jolen Daimary beat his nearest rival, independent candidate Ganesh Kachary, by 57,059 votes in the Tamulpur seat.

In this year’s assembly election, Gossaigaon seat was won by the UPPL while BPF had bagged Tamulpur.

Mariani and Thowra had Congress MLAs, while Bhabanipur was cornered by AIUDF.

ANDHRA PRADESH: The ruling YSR Congress’ Dasari Sudha, the wife of late MLA Venkata Subbaiah, retained the Badvel (SC) Assembly seat for the party, defeating the BJP’s Panatala Suresh with a margin of 90,000 votes.

BIHAR: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) retained both Tarapur and Kusheshwar Asthan assembly seats.

In Tarapur, JD(U) candidate Rajiv Kumar Singh defeated his nearest rival of the RJD, Arun Kumar Sah, by a slender margin of less than 4,000 votes, while it bagged Kusheshwar Asthan seat by a margin of more than 12,000 votes.

JD(U)’s Aman Bhushan Hazari, the death of whose father had necessitated the by-election, polled 58,882 votes.

HARYANA: INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala defeated BJP’s Gobind Kanda with a margin of over 6,700 votes in Congress candidate Pawan Beniwal finished third in the elections, the voting for which took place on October 30.

Gobind Kanda, the brother of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and MLA Gopal Kanda, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month.

Beniwal, who had unsuccessfully contested the previous Assembly polls against Chautala, recently switched over from the BJP to the Congress HIMACHAL PRADESH: The opposition Congress retained Fatehpur and Arki Assembly seats while it wrested Jubbal-Kotkhai seat from the BJP.

In Mandi, Pratibha Singh got 3,69,565 votes against 3,62,075 secured by the BJP candidate.

The ruling BJP candidate lost her deposits in Jubbal-Kotkhai, losing to a BJP rebel whose father earlier held the seat.

KARNATAKA: The BJP wrested Sindgi assembly segment from the JD (S) but lost the Hangal seat to the Congress.

Ramesh Bhusanur of BJP won in Sindgi seat by a margin of 31,185 votes, by securing 93,865 votes, while his closest rival Congress’ Ashok Managuli secured 62,680 votes.

In Hangal, Congress’ Srinivas Mane won by a margin of 7,373 votes, securing 87,490 votes, while his closest rival Shivaraj Sajjanar of BJP bagged 80,117 votes.

MADHYA PRADESH: The BJP wrested two assembly seats from the Congress — Prithvipur by a margin of 15,687 votes and Jobat (ST) by a margin of 6,104 votes, but lost Raigoan (SC) seat to the opposition party.

BJP candidate Gyaneshwar Patil defeated Congress Rajnarayan Singh Purni in Khandwa Lok Sabha seat.

MAHARASHTRA: Congress retained Deglur (SC) Assembly seat with the party nominee Jitesh Raosaheb Antapurkar defeating his nearest BJP rival Subhash Pirajirao Sabne by a margin of 41,917 votes.

The bypolls was necessitated due to the death of Jitesh’s father and sitting Congress MLA Raosaheb Antapurkar MEGHALAYA: The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance got a shot in the arm, as it clinched all three assembly seats.

The National People’s Party wrested Rajabala and Mawryngkneng seats from the Congress, while the United Democratic Party, a partner in the MDA government, emerged victorious in Mawphlang, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said.

MIZORAM: The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) won the by-election to the Tuirial assembly seat in Mizoram by securing 39.96 percent of the total 14,593 votes polled.

MNF candidate K Laldawngliana defeated his nearest opponent Laltlanmawia of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) by a margin of 1,284 votes, the EC said.

The bypolls to Tuirial seat were necessitated due to the death of incumbent MLA Andrew H Thangliana, who was allied with the ZPM, in August.

RAJASTHAN: The ruling Congress party in Rajasthan wrested Dhariawad (ST) from the BJP and retained Vallabhnagar assembly seat.

Preeti Shaktawat defeated her nearest rival and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) candidate Udailal Dangi in Vallabhnagar assembly constituency by a margin of 20606 whereas Nagraj Meena won bypolls on Dhariawad seat by defeating independent candidate Thawarchand with a margin of 18725 votes.

TMC’s Subrata Mondal trounced his BJP rival Palash Rana by over 1.43 lakh votes in Gosaba, clinching 87.19 percent votes against a paltry 9.95 percent polled by the saffron party candidate.

TMC’s Braja Kishor Goswami wrested Santipur from the BJP, defeating Niranjan Biswas by 64,675 votes.

  • Haryana bypolls: INLD’s Abhay Chautala wins Ellenabad Assembly seat by over 6,700 votes

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala defeated BJP’s Gobind Kanda with a margin of over 6,700 votes in Haryana’s Ellenabad Assembly bypolls on Tuesday.

Congress candidate Pawan Beniwal finished third in the elections, the voting for which took place on October 30.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate secured nearly 66,000 votes, officials said.

The bypoll was necessitated after Chautala in January resigned as the MLA from the seat in protest against the Centre’s contentious farm laws.

While there were 19 candidates in the fray, most of them Independents, the main contest eventually turned out to be between Chautala and Kanda.

Gobind Kanda, the brother of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and MLA Gopal Kanda, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month.

Gopal Kanda, the MLA from Sirsa, has extended support to the BJP-JJP government in Haryana.

Beniwal, who had unsuccessfully contested the previous Assembly polls against Chautala, recently switched over from the BJP to the Congress.

  • Ellenabad bypoll: INLD leader Abhay Chautala’s lead thins over BJP’s Gobind Kanda

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: INLD secretary general Abhay Singh Chautala’s lead thinned over his nearest rival Gobind Kanda of the BJP in the Ellenabad assembly constituency in Haryana, according to latest trends for bypolls.

Counting of votes for the October 30 bypoll to the seat is in progress.

While Chautala maintained a consistent lead during the first seven rounds of counting, the margin dropped from 8,180 votes to 2,985 in the subsequent rounds.

There are 16 rounds of counting of votes.

The bypoll was necessitated after Chautala in January resigned as the MLA from the seat in protest against three central farm laws and to stand in solidarity with the farmers who are protesting against these legislations since the past one year.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate is leading over Gobind Kanda by a margin of 2,985 votes, according to trends available at 1 pm.

While BJP-JJP combine candidate Gobind Kanda is giving a fight to Chautala, opposition Congress’ candidate Pawan Beniwal is trailing at third spot.

Out of the votes counted so far, Chautala has secured 40,633, Kanda 37,648 and Beniwal has got 14,951 votes.

While there are 19 candidates in the fray, most of whom are Independents, the main contest is between Chautala, Beniwal and JJP-backed BJP candidate Gobind Kanda.

Over 81 per cent of polling was recorded for the bypoll.

Gobind Kanda, the brother of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and legislator Gopal Kanda, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month.

Gopal Kanda, the MLA from Sirsa, has extended support to the BJP-JJP government.

Beniwal, who had unsuccessfully contested the previous assembly polls against Chautala, recently switched over from the BJP to the Congress.

Abhay Chautala, the younger son of INLD president and former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, had won the Rori assembly bypoll in Sirsa district in 2000.

Ellenabad, a predominantly rural constituency, has been a traditional stronghold for the Chautala clan.

Abhay Chautala won the 2010 bypoll from Ellenabad, when Om Prakash Chautala vacated the seat to retain the Uchana seat in Jind district — the other constituency from which he had contested the election in 2009 and won.

Abhay Chautala retained the Ellenabad seat in 2014 too.

He again won from Ellenabad in the 2019 assembly polls, when he was the lone INLD MLA to enter the House.

The win in the bypoll was crucial for the INLD otherwise the party would have had no MLA to represent in the state assembly.

  • Ellenabad bypolls: INLD’s Abhay Chautala eyeing hat-trick

    By PTI

SIRSA: The bypoll to the Ellenabad Assembly constituency in Haryana’s Sirsa district on Saturday is all set to witness a triangular contest, with opposition INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala, whose resignation over the farm laws issue necessitated the election, eyeing another win.

The bypoll will be held on October 30 and the counting will take place on November 2.

Gobind Kanda, brother of Haryana Lokhit Party chief and legislator Gopal Kanda, had joined the BJP recently and had been fielded by the BJP-JJP combine.

Pawan Beniwal, who had unsuccessfully contested the previous assembly poll against Abhay Chautala, recently switched over from the BJP to the Congress.

He is in the fray as candidate of the main opposition party.

Abhay Chautala’s resignation in January over the farm laws issue had necessitated the bypolls to the rural constituency falling in Sirsa district.

Over 1.85 lakh voters which includes over 98,000 men and 86,000 women, are eligible to cast their votes.

The electioneering for the Ellenabad Assembly seat bypoll ended on Wednesday evening with the three central agriculture laws emerging key issue in the election.

Although a total of 19 candidates, mostly independents are in the fray, Abhay Chautala, Beniwal and Gobind Kanda are being considered as key candidates.

A major part of the Ellenabad Assembly constituency is rural with people mostly relying on agriculture.

The elections for the Ellenabad Assembly seat have been held 14 times in which only the candidates of the party led by late Devi Lal were victorious.

However, things are a bit different this time as many members of the Chautala family are part of the BJP-JJP coalition government.

During the campaigning, Abhay Chautala’s elder brother and JJP chief Ajay Singh Chautala, the latter’s son and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, targeted the INLD leader holding him responsible for the party’s decline.

Power Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, who is an Independent MLA, also campaigned against Abhay Chautala and in favour of the BJP candidate Gobind Kanda.

The Congress and BJP have targeted Abhay Chautala, alleging that he had thrust the election on people of Ellenabad.

Tight security arrangements have been made for the bypolls with deployment of 30 companies of central security force, five companies of the Rapid Action Force and Haryana Police.

One company comprises around 120 personnel.

Abhay Chautala is eyeing a hat-trick as he will be contesting his third bypoll.

Earlier, he had won the Rori Assembly bypoll in Sirsa district in 2000 and the 2010 bypoll from Ellenabad when INLD chief O P Chautala had vacated the seat as he decided to retain Uchana seat in Jind district, the other seat from which he had contested in 2009 and won.

In the 2010 bypolls to Ellenabad, Abhay Chautala won the seat and retained it in 2014 too.

He again won Ellenabad in 2019 assembly polls when he was the lone INLD MLA to enter the Assembly.

Winning the Saturday’s bypoll is crucial for Abhay Chautala as a loss will deal a body blow to the INLD, which in recent years is reeling under series of electoral setbacks.

While the farmers’ agitation against the central farm laws has emerged as the biggest factor in this bypoll, some factors like shortage of irrigation facilities in few villages and waterlogging problem in some segments are also likely to play a role in the bypoll.

This is the second bypoll within a year which Haryana faces.

In November last year, main opposition Congress had retained the Baroda assembly seat after its candidate Indu Raj Narwal defeated BJP nominee and Olympian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt.

The Baroda seat in Sonipat district had fallen vacant after the demise of Congress MLA Sri Krishan Hooda.

  • INLD chief’s outreach puts Nitish Kumar in Catch 22 situation

    By Express News Service

PATNA:  An invitation from INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala to attend the birth anniversary event of his father and the former deputy prime minister Devi Lal in Jind has put Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in a Catch 22 situation.

Observers said if Nitish attends the September 25 Jind event, it could deteriorate JD(U)’s already strained relations with the BJP, with whom it shares power in Bihar, but if he skips the invite, he may lose the chance to share stage with a constellation of national leaders, cherry-picked by Chautala to form a non-BJP and non-Congress Third Front ahead of the 2024 election.

While Nitish has not confirmed the receipt of any invite, sources said Chautala has sent one to the Bihar chief minister. Chautala, who was recently released from prison after his conviction in a scam in Haryana, has invited Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), Mamata Banerjee (TMC), Sharad Pawar (NCP), Parkash Singh Badal (SAD), H D Deve Gowda of JD(S), Farooq Abdullah (NC) and Jayant Choudhary (RLD) to the event. However, none from the RJD or the Congress has been called.

The Jind event comes at a time when certain sections of the JD(U) have been making the Nitish-as-PM pitch. Analysts believe Nitish stands a good chance of being named as the prime ministerial face in the proposed Third Front due to his neutral political stand. “He shares neutral relations with Mamata and Sharad Pawar, among others. If a Third Front is formed, Nitish may emerge as its PM face due to his administrator skills and secular credentials.”
