Geopolitical storm clouds over the Middle East are fueling price hikes in India’s skies. Akasa Air, the newest player in domestic aviation, has hiked fares with a fuel surcharge set…

Geopolitical storm clouds over the Middle East are fueling price hikes in India’s skies. Akasa Air, the newest player in domestic aviation, has hiked fares with a fuel surcharge set to begin March 15, 2025, joining giants like Air India and IndiGo in passing on soaring ATF costs.

In a Saturday announcement on X, Akasa detailed the impact: surcharges from ₹199 for short hops to ₹1,300 on longer routes, applicable to both domestic and international flights. New bookings post 00:01 hours on March 15 will bear the brunt, while prior tickets remain untouched.

Per-sector billing means the fee scales with journey length, a direct response to fuel’s outsized role in expenses. Recent Middle East flare-ups have sent ATF prices soaring, squeezing airline margins across the board.

Akasa assures passengers of unwavering focus on top-tier service and competitive pricing despite the escalation. Continuous oversight of market dynamics will guide future surcharge tweaks.

IndiGo led the charge yesterday, rolling out charges from ₹425 to ₹2,300 effective March 14. Air India duo imposed ₹399 on domestic legs from March 12.

This wave of surcharges underscores aviation’s vulnerability to global events. With fuel accounting for nearly half of operating costs, carriers have little choice but to adjust. Travelers planning trips should book early to dodge the increases and monitor updates.

As Akasa navigates these choppy waters, its strategy balances cost recovery with customer loyalty. The broader industry faces a test of resilience amid uncertain international relations.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, has pledged decisive action following widespread IndiGo flight cancellations and delays that have significantly impacted passengers. The minister assured the public that the situation is improving, with airport congestion expected to subside by the next day. A dedicated committee has been established to scrutinize the operational disruptions, identify the root causes of the “IndiGo fiasco,” and pinpoint accountability. “We are deeply observing this, and observing the FDTL norms, scheduling network. We will thoroughly look into this and ensure that all airlines follow due diligence,” stated Minister Naidu. The government’s immediate focus is on restoring normalcy for travelers and providing full support. The inquiry committee will investigate the extensive cancellations, which have affected over 1,000 flights in recent days, and “necessary action” will be taken against those found responsible to prevent future occurrences. This commitment underscores the seriousness with which the ministry is addressing the airline’s operational failures.

Indian Railways has significantly ramped up its services to accommodate a surge in passengers, a consequence of widespread IndiGo flight cancellations. A total of 116 additional coaches have been added across 37 trains, operating over 114 enhanced trips nationwide. This strategic move aims to provide much-needed relief to travelers facing travel disruptions. The Southern Railway has led these capacity enhancements, augmenting 18 trains with extra chair car and sleeper class coaches on high-demand routes. These additions, effective from December 6, 2025, substantially boost travel options in the southern region. Northern Railway follows suit, incorporating 3AC and chair car coaches into eight trains to meet the heavy travel demand in northern corridors. Western Railway has also responded by adding 3AC and 2AC coaches to four key trains, facilitating travel from western regions to the national capital. Furthermore, special train services are in operation, including a Gorakhpur-Anand Vihar Terminal special running multiple trips and a New Delhi-Jammu Vande Bharat special. Additional superfast specials are also connecting New Delhi with Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram, ensuring extensive connectivity for travelers across the country.

Passengers facing widespread disruptions with IndiGo flights can now get real-time updates amidst ongoing cancellations and delays. The airline’s operations have been severely impacted for several days, with hundreds of flights affected daily and on-time performance plummeting. This disruption is primarily attributed to a shortage of crew members, exacerbated by the recent implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules. IndiGo has informed aviation authorities that it is reducing operations to stabilize its schedule, with a target of full normalcy by mid-February. In the interim, further cancellations are anticipated.

For travelers seeking to monitor their journey, the most effective method is to use IndiGo’s official digital platforms. By visiting the airline’s website or utilizing the mobile application, passengers can access live flight status information. On the website, navigate to the ‘Trips’ section and select ‘Flight Status.’ You will need to provide your flight number or PNR, along with your departure and arrival cities and travel date. The app offers a similar, user-friendly interface. After downloading the official IndiGo app, select ‘Flight Status’ and enter your flight details or origin-destination pair. It is highly recommended to enable notifications within the app for instant alerts on any schedule changes, gate modifications, or cancellations. Always verify your flight status multiple times before heading to the airport, refreshing the page or app frequently for the most up-to-date information.

India’s aviation sector is facing significant disruption as IndiGo, the nation’s largest carrier, grapples with widespread flight cancellations. Over 500 flights were grounded on Thursday alone, impacting thousands of travelers. In response, the Civil Aviation Ministry and the DGCA have initiated a detailed review, with Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu personally assessing the situation and meeting with IndiGo’s leadership.

The minister has issued a stern warning to IndiGo against increasing airfares during this period of operational turmoil. He emphasized that ample preparation time was available for the airline to adapt to new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms and manage crew planning challenges. The Ministry is closely monitoring developments and has directed airport authorities to provide support to stranded passengers.

IndiGo attributes the disruptions to crew planning issues, the FDTL norm implementation, and seasonal weather patterns. The airline has informed the DGCA that it will curtail operations starting December 8th and anticipates a full normalization of flight schedules by February 10, 2026. This extended timeline suggests deep-rooted issues affecting the airline’s capacity and reliability. Passengers are advised to expect potential further cancellations in the coming days as IndiGo works to implement corrective measures and submit a comprehensive roadmap for recovery, including crew recruitment, aircraft induction, and safety assessments, to the DGCA.

Thousands of travelers faced travel turmoil this week as India’s largest airline, IndiGo, experienced a significant operational breakdown. Over 200 flights were canceled nationwide between Tuesday and Wednesday, with hundreds more subjected to lengthy delays. Passengers at airports found themselves in chaotic scenes, with long queues and constantly updating cancellation notices. Airport staff struggled to manage the growing crowds as the airline grappled with the widespread disruption.

The cascading effect stemmed from a confluence of factors. Crew shortages, newly implemented flight duty time limitations (FDTL), technical issues at major airports, and the usual winter travel congestion all contributed to the gridlock. The airline’s extensive network, which operates around 2,200 flights daily, proved particularly vulnerable to these combined pressures.

The most critical pressure point was crew availability. Stricter FDTL regulations, effective since November 1, have reduced pilot working hours and increased mandatory rest periods. This has created a significant shortage of legally eligible crew members, leading to flights being grounded. In many cases, entire flight sequences were scrapped because pilots, once their legally mandated rest periods were applied, could no longer operate subsequent flights.

These new FDTL norms have necessitated a complete overhaul of pilot rosters and flight schedules. IndiGo’s dense network and a substantial number of night operations meant that the scheduling system struggled to adapt to the revised requirements. This led to immediate crew shortages on busy routes.

Compounding these internal issues, technical malfunctions at Delhi and Pune airports disrupted check-in and departure control systems. These delays created a domino effect, leading to missed departure slots and impacting aircraft rotations. Given IndiGo’s tightly integrated operations, minor delays at key hubs quickly escalated into nationwide disruptions.

The winter season, characterized by high passenger volumes and frequent fog, further strained the already congested aviation system. IndiGo’s tightly packed schedule offered little buffer for delays, causing initial disruptions to snowball throughout the day. Official data revealed a dramatic drop in IndiGo’s on-time performance, falling to just 35% on Tuesday, with over 1,400 flights delayed. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also recorded 1,232 cancellations across November.

The DGCA’s enhanced FDTL rules, designed to bolster safety, impose stricter rest periods, duty limits, and reduce night landings. These include caps of eight flight hours daily, 35 weekly, 125 monthly, and 1,000 annually. Crew members require rest twice their last duty duration, with a minimum of 10 hours in any 24-hour period. Airlines like IndiGo, with extensive overnight operations and high crew utilization, were more exposed to these changes.

While all airlines are subject to the new norms, IndiGo’s dominant market share and extensive network make it more susceptible to widespread impacts. Its reliance on high crew utilization and numerous night flights means that scheduling adjustments under the new rules created immediate gaps. Unlike smaller carriers, IndiGo’s vast operational web offers less flexibility for rapid crew reshuffling.

The airline is implementing ‘calibrated adjustments’ and expects operations to normalize within approximately 48 hours. This involves reallocating crews, revising night schedules, and planning cancellations to prevent further last-minute chaos. Passengers are advised to verify flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Indian airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express, are preparing for potential flight disruptions due to a significant safety advisory from Airbus concerning its A320 family aircraft. The European aircraft manufacturer has issued a global alert, highlighting that strong solar radiation could potentially impact critical flight-control computers on these planes. This issue necessitates software or minor hardware modifications for a substantial portion of India’s A320 fleet, estimated to be around 560 aircraft. Approximately half of these planes may require inspections and fixes, a process that could lead to temporary grounding. Given that A320 jets are the backbone of domestic air travel in India, these grounding periods are expected to cause widespread flight delays and possible cancellations across major carriers. IndiGo has acknowledged the alert and is actively working on the updates, warning passengers of potential “slight schedule changes.” Air India Express is implementing precautionary measures, anticipating delays, while Air India confirmed that its affected A320s will undergo necessary realignments, leading to slower turnaround times and increased delays. Airbus emphasized that safety is paramount and apologized for any inconvenience, committing to full support for airlines in rolling out the required updates. The advisory stems from an incident where an A320 experienced an uncommanded downward pitch, attributed to a glitch in the Elevator and Aileron Computer (ELAC). The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has mandated immediate installation of updated ELAC units to prevent potential structural stress on aircraft.

A significant technical issue affecting the Airbus A320 family of aircraft is causing widespread flight disruptions in India. Strong sun glare has been identified as a potential cause for corrupting critical data within the flight control system’s Elevator and Aileron Computer (ELAC) module. This flaw, officially acknowledged by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), could directly impact aircraft control. Airbus has classified this as a ‘very serious technical risk,’ leading to the largest fleet-wide recall in its 55-year history, potentially affecting up to 6,000 aircraft globally. In India, with over 560 A320 family planes in operation, an estimated 200 to 250 aircraft require immediate inspection and modification. Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express are proactively addressing the mandate, with some flights already experiencing delays and cancellations. The mandatory fix involves grounding affected planes for software updates or hardware replacements, a process expected to continue causing ripple effects throughout the aviation sector. Passengers are advised to check their flight status due to these unavoidable disruptions.
