A groundbreaking update from Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has Parliament buzzing: serious rail accidents in India have nosedived by nearly 90% since 2014-15, thanks to a safety revolution sweeping the rails.

In his Lok Sabha written response on Wednesday, Vaishnaw laid out compelling statistics. The number of grave incidents fell sharply from 135 in 2014-15 to a mere 14 as of late February in 2025-26. This isn’t just numbers – it’s lives saved and families spared grief.

Looking back, the decade prior to 2014 was grim: 1,711 serious accidents from 2004-05 to 2013-14 led to 904 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. Post-2014 reforms slashed that to 678 events through 2023-24, with fatalities dropping to 748 and injuries to 2,087.

The trend holds strong. Fiscal 2024-25 logged 31 accidents (18 deaths, 92 injured), and 2025-26 has seen 14 (16 deaths, 28 injured) till now.

Behind these figures lie strategic overhauls. Tracks are better maintained, signaling is modernized, and tech upgrades abound. Safety budgets have ballooned from Rs 39,200 crore a decade ago to over Rs 1.17 lakh crore today, with even more slated for next year.

Human error is being systematically eliminated: 6,665 stations now boast electronic interlockings, 10,153+ level crossings are secured, and 6,669 stations use track circuiting for real-time monitoring.

Pride of place goes to ‘Kavach’, India’s homegrown ATP system launched in 2020 and now protecting 1,452 km, including high-traffic corridors like Delhi-Mumbai. Vaishnaw’s vision? A future where technology ensures every train ride is accident-free.

In a bold move to sanitize train catering, Indian Railways is deploying QR codes and digital tracking to weed out unauthorized vending operations. Parliament was informed Thursday by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw that these steps are transforming passenger meals into a secure, verified affair.

Authorized sellers in trains are now identifiable at a glance through QR-embedded ID cards issued to each catering worker. Scanning these codes confirms legitimacy, effectively blocking unlicensed hawkers from boarding.

Quality upgrades are at the forefront, with modern base kitchens serving as the backbone. CCTV surveillance oversees every cooking step, while premium branded ingredients like rice, lentils, oils, and dairy ensure meals meet exacting standards. Dedicated food safety overseers patrol these facilities, upholding hygiene and FSSAI compliance.

Each catering unit boasts certified food safety officers, backed by rigorous inspections and lab-tested food samples. Pantry cars undergo third-party audits for sanitation, with passenger feedback loops driving continuous improvement.

IRCTC’s skill-enhancement workshops equip staff to deliver exceptional service. This multi-pronged strategy not only curbs illegal vending but also boosts overall catering reliability, setting a benchmark for public transport food services across India.

Bhilai Nagar Railway Station in Chhattisgarh’s Durg has emerged reborn from the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide drive to elevate rail facilities to global standards. This overhaul addresses longstanding passenger grievances, delivering a safer, more efficient travel ecosystem.

Key enhancements include expanded waiting halls with modern amenities, refurbished platforms for easier boarding, and dual-side ticket counters that cut queuing times dramatically. The premises now feature hygienic washrooms, automated ticket dispensers, ample seating, and well-planned parking zones. Security has been fortified with CCTV networks and additional policing, ensuring peace of mind for families and solo travelers alike.

Feedback from users underscores the impact. A daily commuter noted, ‘Ticket buying is a breeze now, and the clean lounges make waiting pleasant.’ Local businessman Suresh Prasad praised the sanitation drive, calling it a ‘game-changer for daily routines.’ Railway employee Kajal Deshmukh added that air-conditioned spaces and vending machines are already popular hits.

The upgrades promise ripple effects: boosted footfall could enhance regional trade and tourism. Yet, voices like resident Prakash Verma’s call for extended train halts, arguing it would connect Bhilai directly to major cities without detours.

This project exemplifies Indian Railways’ commitment to passenger-centric growth. As more stations follow suit, expect a new era of comfortable, reliable journeys across the network.

Indian Railways kicked off 2026 on a high note, with February freight earnings swelling 2.97% to 14,571.99 crore rupees compared to the prior year. Official statistics unveiled Friday showcase the network’s resilience and strategic push into high-demand sectors.

The previous February’s 14,151.96 crore pales against this growth, fueled by a 3.96% hike in freight volume to 137.72 million tonnes versus 132.48 million tonnes. NTKM, a critical efficiency barometer, advanced 4.18% to 76,007 million from 72,955 million.

Leading the charge were staples like coal and iron ore, alongside finished steel, fertilizers, cement, and containers. Iron ore daily loading leaped 27.6% to 0.675 MT, while raw iron and steel climbed 20.8% to 0.343 MT.

Steel plant raw materials (sans iron ore) rocketed 46.9% to 0.141 MT. Fertilizers increased 10.2% to 0.184 MT, and container/mineral oil EXIM traffic jumped 17.8%. Imported containers rose 5.6%, domestic by 2.3%.

Year-to-date from April 2025, cumulative loading reached 1,503.8 MT, surpassing last year’s 1,456.07 MT by 3.28%. Revenue aggregated 1.61 lakh crore, with NTKM growing 1.62% to 840,000 million.

This performance underscores Railways’ pivot towards freight dominance, optimizing infrastructure to meet India’s industrial hunger and cementing its role in the supply chain revolution.

Indian Railways is on a roll with freight revenues hitting a new high in February, up almost 3% year-on-year to ₹14,571.99 crore. This beats last February’s ₹14,151.96 crore, as per official figures unveiled Friday. The numbers highlight the railway network’s resilience and efficiency in hauling goods across India.

Volume-wise, freight loaded jumped 3.96% to 137.72 MT from 132.48 MT. Transport output in NTKM terms advanced 4.18% to 76,007 million, surpassing the prior year’s 72,955 million. These metrics signal deeper penetration into industrial supply chains.

Coal remained the powerhouse, but iron ore stole the spotlight with daily loadings soaring 27.6% to 0.675 MT. Finished steel climbed 20.8% to 0.343 MT, and steel plant raw materials (sans iron ore) skyrocketed 46.9% to 0.141 MT. Fertilizers added 10.2% to reach 0.184 MT, while mineral oils and container EXIM grew 17.8%.

Major commodities showed consistent monthly gains. Container segments performed well: imports up 5.6%, domestic by 2.3%. Over April 2025-February 2026, Railways moved 1,503.8 MT of freight—3.28% more than last year’s 1,456.07 MT. Revenues totaled ₹1.61 lakh crore, with NTKM at 840,000 million, up 1.62%.

As India pushes for multimodal logistics, these figures bolster confidence in rail’s competitive edge over roads. Upcoming dedicated freight corridors promise even more capacity, potentially accelerating this momentum into the next fiscal.

In a major push for Tamil Nadu’s development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched projects exceeding Rs 4,400 crore in Madurai, describing the ceremony as a glorious chapter in the state’s progress.

Speaking to a cheering crowd, he outlined how these projects would enhance connectivity, accelerate economic growth, create employment, and improve living standards for lakhs. Farmers gain better market access via upgraded roads, tourists and devotees enjoy smoother journeys, and industries benefit from swift logistics.

The Centre’s focus on highways has been transformative: over 4,000 km constructed in Tamil Nadu since 2014. Today marked the foundation laying for two critical national highways.

PM Modi spotlighted revolutionary changes in Indian Railways, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where allocations jumped from Rs 880 crore yearly pre-2014 to a projected Rs 7,600 crore in 2026-27—almost nine times higher. The iconic Pamban Bridge, India’s pioneering vertical-lift sea bridge he inaugurated recently, has become a tourist hotspot symbolizing engineering prowess.

Nine Vande Bharat and nine Amrit Bharat trains now operate in the state, their coaches built at Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory, fueling self-reliance and youth employment under ‘Make in India’.

Infra allocations for Tamil Nadu have tripled over ten years, and the upcoming budget continues this momentum with bullet train links from Bengaluru to Chennai and Chennai to Hyderabad—game-changers for South India’s economy. The state joins the ‘Rare Earth Corridor’ for cutting-edge manufacturing and innovation.

Celebrating Tamil Nadu’s cultural legacy, Modi vowed to elevate sites like Adichanallur to world heritage status. With Vision 2047 for a Viksit Bharat, Tamil Nadu stands as a cornerstone. The Centre pledges unwavering support for equitable development and the state’s rise.

As Holi fervor builds, North Eastern Railway brings relief with two unreserved special trains from Kolkata hubs to key northern destinations. Announced amid soaring passenger numbers, these services bypass reservation woes, letting travelers hop on with basic tickets.

Departing March 1, 2026, the trains feature only general coaches for maximum flexibility. Train 03103 leaves Sealdah at 10:40 AM, journeying overnight to Prayagraj by 1:00 PM on March 2. En route, it serves Naihati, Burdwan, Bolpur, Rampurhat, Sahibganj, Kahalgaon, Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Kiul, Mokama, Patna, Buxar, and DDU Junction—perfect for easterners bound for the Sangam city.

Meanwhile, the overnight 03015 from Howrah departs at 12:30 AM, pulling into Delhi at 1:00 PM next day. Major halts span Bandel, Durgapur, Asansol, Madhupur, Jhajha, Barauni, Hajipur, Ballia, Ghazipur City, Aunrihar, Varanasi, Phaphamau, Rae Bareli, and Moradabad, aiding access to UP and Delhi festivities.

NER’s festival ops are robust: alongside these, 66 special trips operate directly, with 116 pair-wise services from other zones and 94 transiting. This network expansion adds vast capacity for seamless travel.

Railway spokespersons advise maintaining order in unreserved sections, prioritizing safety during ticket inspections. The move targets laborers, youth, and families rushing home, promising scalability for extra runs if needed. Holi journeys just got simpler.

Festival season is here, and Indian Railways is pulling out all stops for Holi travelers. Facing a ticket crunch, the network has rolled out 10 fresh special trains linking Bihar,…

Festival season is here, and Indian Railways is pulling out all stops for Holi travelers. Facing a ticket crunch, the network has rolled out 10 fresh special trains linking Bihar, UP, and eastern routes to Kolkata. This expansion targets the massive influx of passengers returning to their hometowns.

Spanning lines from Lal Kuan via Gorakhpur to Kolkata, Saharsa to Purnea, and beyond, these trains will operate through March. They stop at crucial junctions, making travel seamless. Officials note the initiative counters overcrowding, a perennial Holi challenge.

Highlighting the 05060 Lal Kuan-Kolkata, it runs Thursdays March 5-26, starting 1:35 PM from Lal Kuan and hitting Kolkata 11:55 PM next day. Reverse 05059 Saturdays March 7-28 from Kolkata 5 AM to Lal Kuan 3:45 PM, covering Chhapra, Muzaffarpur, and more.

Saharsa-Purnea’s 05506 zips out Tuesdays/Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays March 6-15 at 1:20 PM, back by 3:30 PM. Return 05505 Mondays/Tuesdays/Fridays/Saturdays March 9-17 from 3 PM to Saharsa 6:30 PM.

Short-haul options like Sogarhiya-Danapur (March 1/3) and Dankuni-Patna (Feb 27/March 4) fill gaps perfectly. These services not only boost capacity but also connect underserved pockets in Bihar and UP.

For families separated by work, this is welcome news. Railways’ strategy reflects years of learning from past rushes. Pro tip: Monitor the NTES app for live status and snag RAC/waitlist options if needed. Holi travels just got a festive upgrade.

Indian Railways is accelerating its transformation with Thursday’s approval of Rs 871 crore worth of strategic infrastructure upgrades in key zones. The focus: modernizing coach maintenance ecosystems, decongesting busy lines,…

Indian Railways is accelerating its transformation with Thursday’s approval of Rs 871 crore worth of strategic infrastructure upgrades in key zones. The focus: modernizing coach maintenance ecosystems, decongesting busy lines, removing hurdles, and scaling up transport capacities for passengers and goods alike.

Kicking off in Rajasthan, Rs 174.26 crore funds Phase-I coach maintenance at Shri Ganganagar, tailored for LHB coaches and Vande Bharat trains. This is part of a broader drive to equip the network for cutting-edge rolling stock.

Close by, Lalgarh’s Phase-II expansion gets Rs 139.68 crore, addressing surging maintenance needs from expanding Vande Bharat and LHB operations in Bikaner division.

In Kerala, a game-changer: Rs 450.59 crore to double the 21.10 km Turavur-Mararikulam line under Southern Railway. Vital for the Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayankulam route, it will streamline heavy passenger and cargo movements linked to ports.

Eastern Railway tackles Asansol’s operational woes with a Rs 107.10 crore, 4.75 km Kalipahari bypass. Daily savings include 90 minutes for freight and 30 for coaches, slashing jams, boosting throughput, and optimizing turnaround in a high-traffic zone.

As India’s rail backbone evolves, these investments signal a robust strategy for efficiency, reliability, and growth in the years ahead.

Indian Railways is set for a technological renaissance as Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw rolled out the comprehensive Rail Tech Policy alongside the full digitization of the Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT). Announced as part of the ongoing ’52 Reforms in 52 Weeks’ campaign, these steps aim to inject fresh innovation into one of the world’s largest rail networks.

At its core, the Rail Tech Policy opens doors for innovators, startups, and institutions through a simplified selection mechanism and a new Rail Tech Portal. Financial incentives have been supercharged: expansion grants are now over three times higher, and prototype funding limits have doubled, encouraging bold experimentation.

The policy spotlights transformative technologies like AI-driven elephant intrusion alerts to prevent collisions, smart fire detection in passenger coaches, drones scanning for rail fractures, real-time stress monitoring on tracks, automated load sensors for freight, solar-powered coach amenities, automated cleaning oversight, fog-penetrating obstacle radars, and AI tools for pension and grievance handling.

‘Startups and researchers must integrate systematically with Railways via this digital gateway,’ Vaishnaw asserted, critiquing past cumbersome processes. The shift prioritizes testing novel tech over strict specs, promising accelerated adoption.

Complementing this, the RCT’s e-transformation leverages AI for end-to-end digitization. Claimants will benefit from swift, paperless proceedings accessible nationwide, slashing delays and boosting accountability. This dual announcement signals Railways’ commitment to a future-proof, tech-savvy infrastructure.
