  • For the first time ever, no CSK batter crosses the 400-run mark in a season

    MUMBAI: For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), none of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batters could register 400 runs or more during a single season.

    The side got this unwanted record attached to its name after their final IPL 2022 game against Rajasthan Royals at Brabourne Stadium on Friday. With a five-wicket loss, CSK’s season ended on a disappointing note as they failed to qualify for playoffs, with only four wins in their 14 games.

    The opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is the leading run-scorer of the side. After a horrible first half of the season, the batter managed to get some great scores in the second half. In 14 games, he has scored 368 runs at an average of 26.29. Three fifties have come out of his willow, with the best individual score of 99.

    He is followed by Shivam Dube (289), Ambati Rayadu (274), Devon Conway (252) and Moeen Ali (244).

  • Hamstring injury rules out Ajinkya Rahane from remainder of IPL

    MUMBAI: Kolkata Knight Riders batter Ajinkya Rahane has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL, owing to a hamstring injury, the franchise said on Tuesday.

    In an official announcement posted on its Twitter handle, KKR said, “Ajinkya Rahane is going to miss the remaining games of #IPL2022 due to a hamstring injury. Wish you a speedy recovery @ajinkyarahane88. The knights camp will miss you.”

    Rahane had undergone scans, which revealed that he had torn his tendon.

    In a video posted in the same tweet, Rahane said, “I really enjoyed my time on and off the field with everyone. (I) Learnt a lot as a cricketer; about life; about everything. I will definitely come back stronger next year and I am sure we will do well as a team in the next game and hopefully we will go to Kolkata and the play-offs.”

    Kolkata will take on Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai.

    With seven losses and six wins, KKR are placed at the sixth spot with 12 points and they will not only have to win but do it with a big margin and then hope that other results go their way to salvage any hope of sneaking into the knockout stage.

    MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has predicted a bright future for young Sri Lankan pace bowler Matheesha Pathirana for the franchise in the coming years, after the 19-year-old grabbed two wickets in a losing cause for the four-time champions against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

    Pathirana bowled an economical spell while also taking the wickets of GT opener Shubman Gill and skipper Hardik Pandya to rattle them in the chase in his debut match for CSK. However, Wriddhiman Saha’s unbeaten half-century helped the IPL newcomers to a seven-wicket victory with five balls to spre.

    “Yeah, great. We were really looking forward to him playing and he has had success straightaway. He is very young, we know who the similarities he has with which are big shoes to fill. He had a great debut, and we are really pleased for him. It is a unique skill, and learning to coach how to use that is one of the challenges. It was great for him to get a game with us,” Fleming said.

    The head coach also added that the Super Kings know where they want to improve going into next year, and they will leave “no stone unturned” for IPL 2023.

    “We have got some jigsaw puzzles and we are just trying to fit them all together. It is not just about how a player will perform one day, it is the role that he does. We have got a view to where we want to get to, and where we need to improve for next year. We went through this two years ago, and we got it right. So, we are really working hard on trying to get the jigsaw pieces together.

    “There are some places that we probably need to fill as a lot of teams that don’t qualify have that same challenge. What we try and do is see what we have got right now and make sure that we have no stone unturned when we plan for next year,” said Fleming.

    Fleming added that the expansion of the IPL had provided more opportunities to youngsters to showcase their talent.

    “It has been good. The two new teams have allowed more youngsters to get more prominent roles, which I think is another great opportunity for Indian cricket to develop more talent. We have got a few, we have seen a few on show and we have introduced a few today. Our preference has been for more experience, but by no means do we not look for young players and young talent.

    “And, we are very happy with the guys that have played today and certainly happy with the guys we have in our squad.

    “The start of the three-year cycle is the time that you bring the young players in and then you make something out of them during those three years,” added Fleming.

    MUMBAI: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said Kolkata Knight Riders’ skipper Shreyas Iyer can now bat freely as the middle order batters have started making contributions in IPL 2022.

    In the most exciting IPL season, the Indian core of KKR’s batting line-up looks to have finally found the form as Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh are contributing with the bat in the middle order. Even opener Venkatesh Iyer was back amongst runs the previous game against Mumbai Indians. Gavaskar believes it will bode well for captain Iyer and he can now look to bat with freedom.

    Speaking on ‘Cricket Live’ on Star Sports, Gavaskar said: “Shreyas Iyer is a premier player for KKR, he’s been a premier player for whichever franchise he’s played for. It’s good to see that Shreyas doesn’t have to share all the burden in the batting department. The recent exploits of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh will give him the confidence to bat freely and play those big shots early in the innings.”

    Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif while praising Iyer said the talented Mumbai batter knows how to deal with the pressure and he can take KKR in the right direction.

    Speaking on ‘Cricket Live’ on Star Sports, Kaif said, “Shreyas Iyer is a class batsman. He loves to play under pressure and knows how to score runs consistently. He likes playing long and impactful innings. He is a brilliant captain and can put KKR in the right direction with his batting.”

    Kaif, however, also expressed his concern over Iyer’s struggle against leg-spinners and claimed it is one area where the right-handed batter needs to work on.

    Speaking on Cricket Live on Star Sports, Kaif said, “Shreyas has one weakness though. He doesn’t play leg spinners well and tends to get deceived by the turn and flight from the leggies. It is surprising to see an Indian batter struggle consistently against leg-spin.

    “He’s been dismissed by leg-spinners quite a few times in this season too. Be it Ravi Bishnoi or Rahul Chahar or Kuldeep Yadav, everyone has troubled him but he never looks to see their overs through. Instead, he continues to play those attacking shots and gets dismissed. I think there is a lot of improvement required in this department. But at the same time, there are several qualities about Shreyas which make him a special batter,” he added.

  • CSK star Ambati Rayudu announces retirement from IPL, deletes tweet later

    NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings cricketer Ambati Rayudu surprised everyone on Saturday by tweeting that the Indian Premier League 2022 would be his last season.

    An hour later the veteran Indian cricketer deleted the tweet. This retraction by the CSK batter created a lot of confusion among the fans.

    “I am happy to announce that this will be my last IPL. I have had a wonderful time playing it and being a part of 2 great teams for 13 years. Would love to sincerely thank Mumbai Indians and CSK for the wonderful journey, ” tweeted Rayudu.

    After this, a CSK official spoke to ANI and denied the news of Rayudu’s retirement.

    This is not the first time Rayudu has announced his retirement. When he was not picked for the 2019 ODI world cup, he had announced his retirement but reversed the decision and came back to play in the IPL.

    His tweet on Saturday confused everyone and led to speculation whether the ongoing edition was truly the “last IPL” for Rayudu. In 12 matches in the season so far Rayudu has not been in the best of form scoring 271 runs at an average of 27.10.

    Responding to Rayudu’s tweet former India pacer Irfan Pathan tweeted: “Played cricket with you since our u-19 days. Always admire your batting and the energy you give on the field. Wish you well for your journey ahead brother. You have done very well and should be proud of your achievement @RayuduAmbati.”

    In 55 ODIs Rayudu has scored 1694 runs including three centuries at an average of 47.05 and he has scored 42 runs in six T20 Internationals.
