  • Change in mindset against spinners key to IPL 2022 success: Gujarat Titans batter David Miller

    AHMEDABAD: A change in mindset while facing spinners has played a big part in his success in the ongoing Indian Premier League, believes Gujarat Titans batter David Miller.

    Miller has been the second highest run-scorer for GT with 449 runs from 15 matches, with an unbeaten 94 being his highest score.

    Skipper Hardik Pandya leads the chart with 453 runs from 14 games.

    And the South African said the hardwork he had put in at the nets paid rich dividends.

    “It has been a good season for me against spin. It has been something that I have worked hard on. I have never really felt that I struggled against spin, but it is an area I had to improve,” Miller said during the pre-match press conference ahead of their IPL final against Rajasthan Royals here on Sunday.

    “…I have changed my mindset against spin. I have changed one or two things. I feel like it is just about making sure, especially in T20 cricket, that I am looking to score every ball.

    “If there is a bad ball at least I am in a good position to put it away. It creates a bit of pressure on the bowler. So that is one of the things mentally I have tried to improve,” he added.

    Miller said playing all the matches for GT has been a confidence booster for him.

    “This season (I am) batting a bit higher. I am batting at five. I have managed to bat from the start of the season and play all the games, so it has been enjoyable that I am not in and out (of the team).

    “I have managed to build something the whole season and keep my confidence growing,” he said.

    “I have been backed all the way. Playing all the games allows a player to settle down and really not worry about selection. I am loving being part of this successful team,” added Miller, who has been playing in the IPL for 12 years.

    He attributed GT’s success in its debut season to collective effort.

    “It has obviously been a really good season. But for me the standout has been Rahul Tewatia. Someone like (Mohammed) Shami has bowled incredibly well this season. He has put us in good positions in the powerplay.

    “It is tough to single out players. A lot of guys have put their hands up throughout the competition and that has contributed to a lot of wins,” he said.

    Miller was also effusive in his praise for opener Wriddhiman Saha.

    “He (Saha) is almost like a pillar of strength. I played with him for many years at Kings XI (Punjab Kings) and he is the one who doesn’t complain, doesn’t speak much but gets on with the job.

    “The contributions that he has made has been extremely good upfront. He has set the tone, scoring a lot of boundaries in the powerplay, really getting us to good starts. He has had an incredible season and hopefully he tops with one more extremely good game,” Miller signed off.

    The batter has now a total of 701 IPL fours to his name. He is followed by David Warner and Virat Kohli, with 577 and 576 fours, respectively.

    Coming to the match, Liam Livingstone’s unbeaten knock of 49 runs helped PBKS chase the target of 158 in just 15.1 overs with five wickets in hand. Apart from him, Dhawan and Jitesh Sharma scored 39 and 19 respectively.

    Earlier, Harpreet Brar and Nathan Ellis achieved their respective three-wicket hauls and restricted SRH at 157/8. For SRH, Fazalhaq Farooqi bagged two wickets, while Jagadeesha Suchith and Washington Sundar settled for one wicket each.

    With this win, PBKS ended their IPL 2022 campaign with a total of 14 points while SRH finished with 12 points.

    MUMBAI: Delighted to earn a maiden national call-up, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh said bowling to the big-hitting Punjab Kings batters in the nets helped him perfect his yorkers.

    The 23-year-old, who has impressed one and all with his death over bowling this season, ended his IPL campaign with 10 wickets and an economy rate of 7.70.

    His ability to bowl the change-ups along with wide yorkers and deliveries in the block-hole earned him a place in the squad for the home series against South Africa next month.

    Arshdeep got to know the good news on his way to Punjab’s last league stage match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

    “I got to know just before the match, in the bus that I have got selected in the Indian team. Because the match was going on I didn’t feel much,” Arshdeep told teammate Harpreet Brar after Punjab Kings’ five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

    “It will sink in slowly. It is a special moment. I feel lucky and grateful would like to continue like this,” he added.

    The youngster, who served as a net bowlers for the Indian team in an away series against Sri Lanka last year, said bowling to world-class batters, including Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone, in the Punjab Kings nets session helped him perfect his craft.

    “Credit goes to management. They got such batters in the team that the only option to stop them in the nets was by bowling yorkers. And that improved my ability to bowl yorkers.”

    On Saturday, MI chased down a victory target of 160 in 19.1 overs to knockout Delhi from the competition and paved the way for RCB’s entry as the fourth and final team in the knockout stage.

    “It was unbelievable. The emotions in the changing room were unbelievable. Thank you, Mumbai, we will remember this one,” Kohli said in a release.

    RCB had defeated table-toppers Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in their final league match to keep their hopes alive for a playoff, which depended on the clash between DC and MI.

    Delhi needed to win the match to make it to the playoffs but they came a cropper against bottom-placed MI.

    RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis said the entire team watched the match together and was cheering each and every move made by the Mumbai team.

    “It was so good, I think first of all it was really nice to see that everyone was here from the start of the game, so we watched it together,” he said.

    “We were all shouting for every wicket that Mumbai got and then when they are chasing every boundary. It’s good for everyone to watch together and then the celebration towards the end was awesome to be a part of.”

    RCB will now take on third-placed Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at Edens Gardens on May 25.

    “The last game we played we felt almost like we played our best game of cricket of this campaign so far and that is how you want to enter the knockout stages, so we needed someone to do us a favour and Mumbai did that for us, we are very thankful for that,” Du Plessis said.

    “Obviously now the work starts again, and we get our work mode back on.”

    RCB has never ever won the IPL and allrounder Glenn Maxwell feels the team is very close to achieving that dream.

    “Amazing result for us tonight. There is just one small step in us going further, we are that close to making history for RCB in this tournament. We needed another team, but from now on it’s all us.”

  • For the first time ever, no CSK batter crosses the 400-run mark in a season

    MUMBAI: For the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), none of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batters could register 400 runs or more during a single season.

    The side got this unwanted record attached to its name after their final IPL 2022 game against Rajasthan Royals at Brabourne Stadium on Friday. With a five-wicket loss, CSK’s season ended on a disappointing note as they failed to qualify for playoffs, with only four wins in their 14 games.

    The opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is the leading run-scorer of the side. After a horrible first half of the season, the batter managed to get some great scores in the second half. In 14 games, he has scored 368 runs at an average of 26.29. Three fifties have come out of his willow, with the best individual score of 99.

    He is followed by Shivam Dube (289), Ambati Rayadu (274), Devon Conway (252) and Moeen Ali (244).

    Chennai Super Kings ended their current season with a disappointing five-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals. They end their season at the ninth position on the points table with six points.
