  • Over six COVID-19 vaccines in offing in India: Harsh Vardhan

    By PTI
BHOPAL: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Saturday announced that more than six coronavirus vaccines will come up in India.

He also said that 1.84 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to people so far, while 23 crore tests have been conducted.

“India has developed two vaccines, which have been given to 71 countries.

Many more nations are seeking the vaccines, and these are not little-known nations. Canada, Brazil and other developed countries are using Indian vaccines with a great zeal,” he said.

“More than half a dozen vaccines are going to come up,” he said.

“Till Saturday morning, 1.84 crore vaccine shots have been given in the country and 20 lakh people were inoculated yesterday,” the minister added.

He was speaking while inaugurating the new green campus of the National Institute of Research in Environmental Health near here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to create a new India to turn it into a ‘vishwa guru’ (world leader), he added.

“Respect science. There is a need to end politics over it (vaccine) given that it is a scientific fight not a political one. That is why we should work unitedly,” Vardhan said.

The efforts of our scientists are praiseworthy as due to their labour we have achieved all this.

The year 2020, apart from being a COVID-19 year, will be remembered as the year of science and scientists, he added.

He said that initially there was only one laboratory in India for COVID-19 testing.

“But we have 2,412 testing facilities now,” he added.

“We were the first in the world to isolate the coronavirus. We isolated its mutation. And our scientists helped the ICMR in vaccine. People have praised it (vaccine). Some people tried to create confusion, but truth is unbeatable,” he said.

Talking about the rising infection cases, the minister said this “disturbing trend” was due to the carelessness and misunderstanding.

“People think that as the vaccine has come and all is well now,” he said, while urging them to follow the COVID-19 rules for protection against the virus.

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Daily new cases of COVID-19 in the country climbed to over 13,000 after 19 days taking India’s tally of cases to 1,09,63,394, with experts attributing the rise to increased economic activity and complacency among people.

A total of 13,193 new cases were registered in a span of 24 hours.

The death toll increased to 1,56,111 with 97 daily new fatalities, the data updated by the Health ministry at 8 am showed.

The total COVID-19 active cases remained below 1.5 lakh.

There are 1,39,542 active cases of coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 1.27 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and  50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28,  70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29,  90 lakh on November 20 and  surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

According to the ICMR, 20,94,74,862 samples have been tested up to February 18 with 7,71,071 samples being tested on Thursday.

The 97 new fatalities include 38 from Maharashtra, 14 from Kerala and 10 from Punjab.

A total of 1,56,111 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 51,669 from Maharashtra followed by 12,444 from Tamil Nadu, 12,282 from Karnataka, 10,896 from Delhi, 10,239 from West Bengal, 8,709 from Uttar Pradesh and 7,166 from Andhra Pradesh.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

“Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of  Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Experts have attributed to rise in cases to people letting their guard down.

Dr Samiran Panda, head (epidemiology and communicable diseases division), ICMR said it is always a cause of concern if the number of cases go up.

“If the number of reported cases go up, it is always a cause of concern for any state. These cases will not only happen in young adults but also in elderly population with co-morbidities that is a reason for worry. The reason (for rise)  is the same that when a susceptible population comes close to the infected people the infection transmits from the infected person to the susceptible person,” he told PTI.

He urged people to maintain preventive measures.

“This is the time we should have our preventive measures maintained. We have a vaccine but it is one of the prevention measures. So maintaining physical distancing, limiting social interaction should be followed. If people go out for marriage ceremonies, parties it leads to transmission,” Panda said.

Noted virologist Shahid Jameel said the easy explanation for rise in cases is increased activity and complacency.

“A majority of people have stopped wearing masks thinking that it’s over. This at a time of increased economic activity and person to person contacts. There could also be unique local factors like local trains in Mumbai, cold weather and indoor activity in J-K etc. But a more worrisome thought is if variants might be responsible? Our genomic sequencing density is not high enough to pick this early,” he said.

  • South African Covid-19 strain detected in 4 returnees: Centre

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI: Four cases of the South African variant of the Covid-19 virus had been detected in India last month through its ongoing genomic surveillance initiative. The government on Tuesday announced that

The ICMR director general Balram Bhargava, during a press briefing by the Union Health Ministry, said that the South African variant of the coronavirus was detected in four people who came to the country from Africa in January.

“In India, the South African strain of Covid-19 has been detected in four returnees from South Africa. All travellers and their contacts were tested and quarantined,” he said, adding that the country has also detected the Brazilian strain of the virus in one person.

On the returnees detected with the South African variant, Bhargava said that one was from Angola, one from Tanzania and the remaining two were from South Africa.

In India, 187 cases of the UK variant of Covid-19 cases have also been found — a maximum of which were reported in Delhi.

According to experts, there is no evidence that the South Africa variant causes more serious illness for the vast majority of people who become infected, but there are concerns it can spread more readily and vaccines may not work quite as well against it.

Some of the changes involve the virus’s spike protein — the part of the pathogen that gains the virus entry into human cells. It is also the part that vaccines are designed around, which is why scientists are concerned about these particular mutations.

The South African variant carries a mutation, named N501Y, that appears to make it more contagious or easy to spread, and another mutation, called E484K, is understood to be helping the virus dodge a person’s immune system and may affect how well coronavirus vaccines work.
