New Delhi: China has called on India to work together in resisting what it calls the United States’ “abuse of tariffs.” The appeal comes amid rising trade tensions between Washington and Beijing following President Donald Trump’s announcement of steep import duties on Chinese goods.

Taking to her ‘X’ account on Tuesday, Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, said, “China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complementarity and mutual benefit. Facing the US abuse of tariffs… the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties.”

Yu further said the US tariffs threaten the development rights of countries in the Global South, including India and China. “Trade and tariff wars have no winners,” she added. “All countries should uphold the principles of consultation and true multilateralism, and jointly oppose unilateralism and protectionism in any form.”

Emphasising China’s manufacturing strength and commitment to global trade cooperation, she added, “China’s economy is supported by a complete industrial system and constant investment in research and innovation.”

“We remain a firm defender of globalization and multilateralism, contributing to about 30% of global economic growth each year,” Yu’s post read.

The warning comes after President Trump announced a 104% blanket tariff on all Chinese imports, effective from midnight on April 8. This move followed China’s refusal to withdraw a 34% retaliatory tariff on US goods, prompting Washington to take stricter action.

However, Beijing has taken a firm stance. “The US threat to escalate tariffs against China is a mistake on top of a mistake, which once again exposes the US’ blackmailing nature,” a spokesperson from China’s Commerce Ministry said.

Earlier, the US had imposed 10% duties on all imports and targeted Indian exports with tariffs as high as 27%.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, on Monday said that the reason why China is sitting inside India is because Make in India has failed.

India’s Chief of Army Staff has said that the Chinese are inside our territory, claimed Gandhi. “This is a fact.” “But the reason China is inside our territory is important because people think that wars are fought between armies and their weapons. But the fact of the matter is that wars are fought by industrial systems. The fact of the matter is that China has an industrial system that is far stronger, bigger than our system, and that is why they have the guts to come inside our country. The reason China is sitting inside this country is because Make in India has failed,” said the Congress MP.ALSO READ: ‘Both UPA and NDA failed to provide jobs, I don’t blame PM’: Rahul Gandhi speaks during Budget session; Here are highlights He further said, people talk about AI, but it’s important to understand that AI on its own is absolutely meaningless because AI operates on top of data.”Without data, AI means nothing.” Gandhi said, “And if we look at data today, there is one thing which is very clear. Every single piece of data that comes out of the production system in the world. The data that was used to make this phone, the data that is used to make electric cars.”The data that is used to make basically all electronics on the planet today is owned by China, said Gandhi.”And the consumption data is owned by the United States… China has at least a 10 year lead on India in this space. China has been working on batteries, robots, motors, optics for the last 10 years and we are behind…”On Trump’s inauguration:Attacking the central government on US president Donald Trump’s inauguration, Gandhi said, “When we talk to the United States we would not send our foreign minister to get invite for our Prime Minister to his (Donald Trump’s) coronation, we would not send him (foreign minister) three or four times to get an invite for our Prime Minister, if we were working on our production then the American President would come here and invite the PM.”
Reacting to Gandhi’s statements, Kiren Rijiju asked Gandhi to apologise for ‘lying’ to the House.

Congress leader Pawan Khera reacted sharply on China’s establishment of two new counties in Hotan prefecture and said that the “perfunctory objection” raised by the Ministry of External Affairs in…

Congress leader Pawan Khera reacted sharply on China’s establishment of two new counties in Hotan prefecture and said that the “perfunctory objection” raised by the Ministry of External Affairs in Friday’s press conference over the issue is “notwithstanding.”

“The perfunctory objection raised by MEA is notwithstanding. China draws its confidence from the clean chit the PM gave on 20th June 2020 after the Chinese incursions in our territory. Now that China has created two counties in Hotan prefecture, it is an area which has been traditionally, historically been ours and we have been very consistent about our claim on the area,” Khera told ANI.

He criticised the government’s response to this issue and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introspect the issue.

Khera stated, “Casual objection by EAM would not work,” alleging that China’s confidence in taking such actions arises from the “clean chit” given by PM Modi.

“This needs to be taken seriously and casual objections by the EAM would not work. PM must introspect that he can’t go about distributing clean chits to neighbours who are hostile to our interests,” he added.

Khera further expressed concerns over China’s plan to build a mega-dam on the Brahmaputra river and said, “The dam on the Brahmaputra river again undermines and creates havoc for our interests in the northeastern region. This reflects very poorly on our foreign policy,” said the Congress leader.

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that India had lodged a strong protest with China over the establishment of two new “counties” in a region that included territory under the Union Territory of Ladakh. The ministry emphasized that New Delhi has never recognized Beijing’s “illegal occupation” of the area.

“We have seen the announcement pertaining to the establishment of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture of China. Parts of the jurisdiction of these so-called counties fall in India’s Union Territory of Ladakh. We have never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory in this area,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press conference.

“The creation of new counties will neither have a bearing on India’s long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation of the same. We have lodged a solemn protest with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels,” he added.
