  • Will address nation from Red Fort next year to list progress on promises made, claims PM Modi

    By Agencies

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday exuded confidence that he will address the nation from the Red Fort next year to list out the progress on the promises he had made to the people.

“The promise for change brought me here, my performance brought me here once again. The coming five years are of unprecedented development and a golden moment to realise the dream of India as a developed nation by 2047,” the Prime Minister said in his speech from the ramparts of Red Fort.

“Next year, on August 15 from this same Red Fort I will list out the progress achieved by the nation and sing paeans to your strength, your resolve and your success with greater confidence,” Modi said in his last Independence Day address before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The general elections are scheduled for April-May next year.

Modi said he had made a promise to the nation to usher in change in 2014.

“You reposed your trust in me. I tried to fulfil the trust you reposed in me. The promises I made earned me confidence over the past five years. I had promised you to change through reform, perform and transform. I have worked hard for the nation and I have worked with pride,” the Prime Minister said.

The prime minister called on the people to get rid of corruption, nepotism and appeasement. He said that corruption and appeasement politics have damaged the country and noted that political parties who believe in dynastic politics have one mantra – “party of the family, by the family and for the family.”

“‘Parivarvaad’ and appeasement have caused immense damage to the country. How can a political party have only one family in charge? For them, their life mantra is ‘Party of the family, by the family and for the family,’” PM Modi said in a veiled dig at some opponents of the BJP.

“I firmly believe that when the country will celebrate 100 years of freedom in 2047, the country would be a developed India. I say this on the basis of the capability of my country and available resources. But the need of the hour is to fight three evils – corruption, dynasty and appeasement,” he added.

Balloons in the colours of the Tiranga were released at the Red Fort in the national capital after the conclusion of the PM’s speech. After his address, PM Modi interacted with cadets of the NCC.

This year’s Independence Day will culminate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, which were launched by the Prime Minister from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on March 12, 2021, and will usher the country into the ‘Amrit Kaal.’

PM Modi had previously outlined the Centre’s commitment to make India a developed country by 2047, which will be the centenary year of the country’s independence.

  • This Independence Day speech by PM Modi to be his last from ramparts of Red Fort: Mamata

The TMC boss alleged that Modi has changed the 'Garibi Hatao' (remove poverty) slogan of Indira Gandhi to 'Garib Hatao' (remove the poor people). KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech this year will be his last as the PM from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi.

Banerjee, while speaking at a pre-Independence Day programme organised by her party the Trinamool Congress at Behala here, also proclaimed that opposition bloc INDIA will soon take the field, adding “khela hobe (we will play)”.

‘Khela hobe’ was a slogan that the ruling TMC had coined during the 2021 assembly poll campaign.

“Modiji’s Independence Day speech tomorrow will be his last speech as prime minister from the ramparts of the Red Fort,” Banerjee said.

She also asserted that she believes that the opposition bloc INDIA, of which the TMC is a member, will emerge victorious in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“INDIA bloc will decimate the BJP across the country. In Bengal, the TMC will decisively defeat the saffron party,” she said.

The TMC supremo indicated that she does not harbour prime ministerial ambitions, stating that “Bengal does not want ‘Kursi’ (political position), it wants to dislodge the BJP ‘Sarkar’”.

Banerjee alleged that there are corruption charges against the BJP government at the Centre, citing the Rafale aircraft purchase and demonetisation of high-value notes among “suspect” deals.

“In Bengal, there have been a few instances of corruption against which we have taken immediate steps. However, the central government has several corruption allegations against it, be it the Rafale jet deal or demonetisation of Rs 2,000 notes,” Banerjee said.

The chief minister also accused the central government of holding back central allocation for food projects in West Bengal.

“You (the Centre) are not giving rice to us. You have stopped allocation though you are funding it from our own money. Don’t forget there is a 60:40 allocation ratio for central projects with a 40 per cent state share. If you hold back money to the projects which is our due, people will seek answer from you,” she said.

The TMC boss alleged that Modi has changed the ‘Garibi Hatao’ (remove poverty) slogan of Indira Gandhi to ‘Garib Hatao’ (remove the poor people).

“This shows the anti-people nature of the Narendra Modi government which does not give poor people the right to life, the right to livelihood. They only want to crush the dreams of the poor,” she said.

Cautioning people to sustained attempt to change the history of the country, Banerjee claimed that the saffron party wants people to forget history “but we won’t allow that to happen.”

The CM also asserted that the Modi government has been changing the names of one project after another, rechristening it after the PM.

She claimed that the BJP-ruled Gujarat is flaunted as a model by the saffron ecosystem, but if compared by statistics, West Bengal has got laurels on different parameters and is ahead of the western state.

On the occasion of ‘Kanyashree Divas’, The CM cited statistics of various parameters such as poverty eradication rate, unemployment rate and child mortality rate to buttress her point that West Bengal’s track record is better.

The West Bengal government observes ‘Kanyashree Divas’ on August 14.

  • ‘Look inwards & at BJP’s attitude towards women’: Opposition after PM’s I-Day speech on ‘nari shakti’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Opposition parties on Monday called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he hailed ‘nari shakti’ in his Independence Day speech, asking him to look inwards and on his party’s attitude towards women.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi urged people to pledge not to do anything that lowers the dignity of women, saying a mentality to insult them in speech and behaviour has crept in.

TMC MP Derek O’ Brien reminded the prime minister of the “Didi o Didi” comment made by him on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an election rally in the state.

“Let’s pledge to wipe out misogyny’ said Prime Minister @narendramodi today. Completely agree, Sir. Should we start with you, leading by example,” wrote O’Brien on Twitter, attaching a video of Modi making the reference to Banerjee in his speech.

Congress leader Pawan Khera too posted a video compilation of the prime minister’s remarks on women, including comments made on the floor of the House, on Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury in the Rajya Sabha over her laughter which was condemned as being “sexist”, his comment on Banerjee and the “50-crore girlfriend” remark about Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife, Sunanda Pushkar.

CPI general secretary D Raja too urged the PM to examine the attitude of his own party men with regards to women. “It is not just about women. All humans should be treated with respect in society. This is not happening because the mindset is being controlled by a party which believes in the Manusmriti, patriarchy and caste system. This government has the numbers in both the Houses of Parliament, yet they have not passed the women reservation bill. His speech is mere rhetoric and there is no serious commitment whether towards women or towards the socially backward,” said Raja, who also raised incidents against women and the Dalits where Modi has chosen to remain silent.

Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said Modi’s words did not match the actions on the ground.

“If we look at Maharashtra not having any woman in cabinet with even the women and child portfolios being handed by male ministers. Even the labour force participation is rapidly decreasing and the government is not able to address them,” she said.

“There is also the matter of 33 per cent reservation being championed by the BJP, and despite having a full majority, it has not been implemented. So, those are the issues that we are looking at in 25 years from now. We also have to look at how policies have impacted the women on ground,” Chaturvedi said.

The Prime Minister also said that India has been home to great thinkers like Vivekanand, Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore. “Our heroes like Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Lal Bahadur Shastri fought for our independence and moulded our country.”

    On women

Modi said that every Indian is filled with pride when they remember the strength of the women of the country – be it Rani Laxmibai, Jhalkaribai, Chennamma, Begum Hazrat Mahal.

He also gave a powerful message to the nation to take a pledge. “It’s important that in speech and conduct, we do nothing that lowers the dignity of women,” he said.

“I have one request to every Indian. Can we change the mentality towards our women in everyday life? The pride of Nari Shakti will play a vital role in fulfilling the dreams of India. It is important that in our speech and conduct, we do nothing that lowers the dignity of women. Respect for women is an important pillar of India’s growth. We need to support our ‘Nari Shakti.”

    On unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for unity among people while pointing out that sometimes the country’s talent is restricted by its language barriers, urged countrymen to be proud of every language. “Sometimes our talent is restricted by language barriers. This is an example of Imperialism. When we are connected to our roots, then only can we fly high; and when we fly high, we will provide solutions to the entire world,” asserted the Prime Minister in his address to the nation today.

“Community spirit has risen again in the last few years. For the last three days, the entire country has marched with tricolour,” he said adding that “India has seen a lot of ups and downs in the last 75 years. There have been sorrows as well as achievements in these years. We faced natural calamities, wars and other problems. But unity in diversity became our guiding power.”

    On Green Jobs

Prime Minister said there are multiple employment opportunities opened with the creation of Green Jobs.

“Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyaan, Jai Anusandhan – as we celebrate 75 years, we need to follow this mantra that was given to us by Lal Bahadur Shastri and later tweaked by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”

He also took aim at the evils and sought the people’s cooperation to fight them. The Prime Minister said that the country needs to shift its mentality from “Bhai-Bhatijawad” and Parivaarwad (nepotism) and give an opportunity to the citizens who deserve it.

    On corruption

Addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the country’s 76th Independence Day, the Prime Minister said that there is no place for corruption in our society and that the people of the country need to come together as a society to punish those who have propagated the evil of corruption. “Today the nation shows anger towards corruption, but not the corrupted. Until and unless, people have the mentality of penalizing the corrupt, the nation cannot progress at optimum pace.”

Talent will be the basis of a New India. To cleanse every institute of India, let’s shift our mentality from ‘Bhai Bhatijawad’ and Parivaarwad and give an opportunity to the citizens who deserve it.”

    On Panchpran

Modi also asked the citizens to focus on what he said, “In coming years, we’ve to focus on ‘Panchpran’- First, to move forward with bigger resolves and resolve of developed India; Second, erase all traces of servitude; Third, be proud of our legacy; Fourth, strength of unity and fifth, duties of citizens which includes the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers.

  • Self-obsessed government hell-bent on trivialising freedom fighters’ sacrifices: Sonia Gandhi

    By Agencies

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday alleged that a “self-obsessed” government is hell-bent on “trivialising” the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the party will strongly oppose such attempts made for political gains.

Gandhi’s attack came a day after the BJP released a video narrating its version of events that led to India’s partition in 1947 in which it tangentially accused the top Congress leadership at the time and showed pictures of Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The Congress had also taken a strong exception to the exclusion of India’s first prime minister Nehru in the Karnataka government’s newspaper advertisement on freedom fighters and termed the BJP action “pathetic”.

“Friends, we have achieved a great deal in the last 75 years, but today’s self-obsessed government is bent on trivialising the great sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the glorious achievements of the country, which can never be accepted,” Gandhi said in her message on India’s 76th Independence Day.

“The Congress will strongly oppose any misrepresentation of historical facts and every attempt to put great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Abul Kalam Azad in the dock based on falsehood for “political gains”, she said.

Sonia Gandhi said that in the last 75 years, India has left an indelible mark on the international arena in all fields including science, education, health and information technology through the hard work of its talented people.

“Under the leadership of its visionary leaders, while on one hand, India established a free, fair and transparent election system, on the other, it strengthened democracy and constitutional institutions,” the Congress chief said.

Along with this, India has made its identity as a leading country that has always lived up to pluralism in language, religion and sect, she added.

Meanwhile, the Congress party had organised a tricolour rally Monday — Azadi Gaurav Yatra — which originated from its central headquarters in the national capital. It saw the participation of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra among other leaders.

“The streets of Delhi today experienced Gaurav Yatra of India’s independence. This was the vow of Congressmen who came out with tricolour in their hands – they had achieved freedom, now they will also save it,” the Congress party tweeted in Hindi after the Tricolour rally.

NEW DELHI: Hailing India as a “mother of democracy”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said it is endowed with an “extraordinary strength” that sailed her through the freedom struggle.

In his 82-minute address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 76th Independence Day, Modi said gender equality is the key to a united India as he stressed the need to extend support to ‘Nari Shakti’, adding respect for women is an important pillar for India’s growth.

It is important that in speech and conduct “we do nothing that lowers the dignity of women”, he said.

On the significance of a united country, the Prime Minister said India has much to teach the world on the concept of unity which begins with the family structure.

Gender equality is the key to a united India, he said, adding that without equal importance to sons and daughters in family structures, the idea of unity will be lost.

It was his ninth address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

The teleprompter was sidelined by the nation’s chief as he began his speech by congratulating the countrymen on the completion of 75 years of independence which is being celebrated in the country under the banner of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

“During our freedom struggle, there was not one year where our freedom fighters did not face brutality and cruelty. Today is the day when, as we pay them our respects, we need to remember their vision and dream for India,” PM Modi said while addressing the nation from the Red Fort for the ninth consecutive time.

“Our country is grateful to Gandhiji, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Ramprasad Bismil, Rani Laxmi Bai, Subash Chandra Bose, and all other freedom fighters who shook the foundations of the British Empire. We salute not only those who fought for freedom but also the architects of free India such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Ram Manohar Lohia and Sardar Vallabhai Patel, amongst the many others,” PM Modi said.
